I'm sure many of you despise these 1001 threads, but I think they are a good resource. So the basic premise of this thread would be to give a brief summary of a personality, to be used for those NPCs you didn't plan on needing. Preferably for any race/class, however whatever works is fine. Sorry if a list like this is already made.

The Chronicler - Warforged Expert with a massive repitoire of Knowledge skills on just about anything the PCs want to know. He is more than willing to share his information (at a price) and knows just how to give them enough information to do what needs to be done, but not so much that they won't be coming back for more. He works in a massive public library, where he makes sure all the books are in their proper place on the shelves. He claims to have read them all in his long life, and takes great offense to anyone who doubts his command of obscure knowledge.

I have pile upon pile of NPCs, and while many are not spectacularly memorable in and of themselves, they have a feeling of reality because of the way they interact with their environments...probably most notable, however, is...

2) Whelan, aka Christopher Nath, aka many other things...probably none of which are his real name. An intelligence agent for the largest confederation in the world, his position is nebulous; he obviously is willing to go to great lengths to do his job, including torture, which makes him someone that the Paladin-types of the realm very much resent being ordered to deal with in any way. However, the results he gets makes him seem indispensable.

He inspires a mixture of confusion, anger, and grudging respect among those who work with him up close; while he obviously keeps most of the truth to himself, he has never needlessly placed anyone in harm's way. He seems to lie much of the time just to amuse himself or keep in practice, but his lies are utterly believable unless you specifically know of what he's talking about-and so far as the PCs know, his lies have never actually been harmful. Most of the respect he has earned is because of the power he has from time to time displayed (on par with the greatest PC fighters), the respect and authority he's granted by the Typhean League (one can't dismiss someone who has "The First Stone" in his living room-a painting of the Typhean League's founding, roughly equal in value and national importance to the portrait of Washington saved by Dolly Madison), and his obvious discipline in not being ostentacious-only recently, and under dire circumstances, for example, did PCs learn that he could fly.

The story that's never told, of course, is the interesting bit. PCs have a general idea that he's a ruthless bastard, but they don't know the depths of his Lawful Evilness (and won't, because he's taken magical steps to prevent that).

In four years of playing, no one has ever even seemed to suspect that he is, in fact, a Vampire Lord. He controls portions of his spy network through vampire slaves, and the rest through his natural skills at manipulation and information gathering.

And why does he do what he does? Because the Typhean League is a democracy, and he likes democracy. It's a rare ideal, and he wants to protect it-by any means necessary. He's perfectly conscious of the fact that he's an evil SOB, and perfectly conscious that the good ideals of the Typhean League wouldn't tend to want someone like him around, but they need him.

(On a side note, it's also a highly amusing thing from the DM's perspective to see that all the PCs, whether they love him or hate him, have the impression that he's far too powerful to challenge or even really question. All he's really done is show great strength, the ability to fly, access to information, and an inhuman confidence in himself. In pure combat terms, the PCs could almost certainly take him within a couple of rounds. Subtlety and paranoia, a DM's best friends...)

Great ideas, I will use them. Thanks!
