| mojorooks06-06-06, 06:35 AM | How about just seeing what really justifies killing a PC. I'm talking purposeful DM killing, not the accidental dice kill. 1) Back when I first started RPing we were playing Battletech. One of the guys in the group really didn't seem to get what was going on and in general was not really interested in the game itself. It was one of those things where you could tell role playing was not his thing. Either he didn't have the imagination or the attention span, he couldn't do it. The GM didn't need to kill him - in battletech if you overheat yourself, there is a good posibility of death - he accomplished the feat himself. Hmm... this still isn't a reason to kill his character. Just don't invite him back. They guy was and still is a friend after all. 2) I had a player specifically roll up an evil character telling him what his overall scheme was - I wanted him to eventually steal something from another player. He stole what I wanted him to, ran away and died. for gameplay purposes, if the player completely expects to be killed, it is ok for the DM to kill him. I don't disallow evil characters in my campaign, but all the random things will tend to randomly happen to HIM. 3) A player is in the group that doesn't get along with anybody and nobody likes. After the player has left or been booted, the DM may get extensive brownie points from the existing players by kill the PC as many times as possible in overly-excessive gorey deaths. |
| hmmmm06-06-06, 06:39 AM | Your title is wrong then as it should say "1001 reasons to kill a PC". |
| The_Unfan06-06-06, 07:17 AM | The best reason to kill a PC. Because Mojorooks is playing him. |
| StakeTeriyake06-06-06, 07:20 AM | The best reason to kill a PC? Because you feel like it. UNLIMITED POWER!!!! Also, if he says "I cast finger of death on her c******s" one too many times...WITH A CHICK IN THE ROOM FOR GOD'S SAKE! |
| The_Unfan06-06-06, 07:22 AM | Also, if he says "I cast finger of death on her c******s" one too many times...WITH A CHICK IN THE ROOM FOR GOD'S SAKE! If that really happened that guy is pretty cool. I've honestly never had a reason to purposefully kill a PC. Just hasn't came up. I think perhaps I just play with the coolest people on Earth. |
| Shaggy_Shaggs06-06-06, 07:41 AM | The PC was struck down in combat protecting his loved ones, is ready to die from that moment of self-sacrifice, and doesn't appreciate an "Actually you're not dead, you're at -9 and stable" spoiling the moment because you had plans for the PC later. A DM did this (the -9 and stable, not the earned death) with me once when my fighter PC was slain by a crit from a monster he knew he couldn't withstand long, and chose to tackle head-on anyway so his brothers and sister could live. I didn't like it at all. I guess this falls under the broader heading of When the PC knowingly, willingly sacrifices his life for what he considers a worthwhile cause, and not following through on the kill would rob the PC of his honour and glory moment. |
| hmmmm06-06-06, 08:01 AM | They say Meka-Leka-Hi-Meka-Hiney-Ho during a battle. |
| GingerbreadMan06-06-06, 09:56 AM | Actually its funny I find this thread now. Ive already had a conversation with one of my players who will be leaving for college later this summer, and wants to go out with a bang. Tonight happens to be the end of their quest, with a giant battle of a summoned undead army lead by the evil sorcerer nemesis the group has come to know time and time again, and in this giant battle, a PC will be slain. Since hes leaving, I asked him if I could kill him to make him more memorable in next games (he's coming back as an angel to aid his allies again) Personally I think this fit in great, and set me up for some upcoming ideas for adventures this summer with school out. The guy is REALLY excited to be killed. its so funny, the other PCs have no idea, and we keep talking about the upcoming game like it will be amazing and everyone cant wait to play tonight. As a DM, i feel I've succeeded |
| Tristan06-06-06, 06:57 PM | 10?) they purposfully play a Pixie warlock just so they can be constantly invicible and have infinite attacks from 60 ft away. And for some reason this pixie sold his soul to the god of chaos and is evil and constantly tells the other plays "I will kill you" |
| tharivol26606-06-06, 09:06 PM | actual 10) i got my players to kill one of my PCs so they could instal the head of vecna. then i made them go through trouble shooting to figure out how to activate it and bring the dead one back to life. |
| Voldar_Mecorthio06-06-06, 10:49 PM | 11?. The player is being a total IDIOT and the only way to shut him up is to kill him. |
| Dippiey06-06-06, 10:59 PM | 12) Because you Freakin' HATE THAT JOKER! No other Reason!!! Their is a reason I don't DM. :D Disclaimer: Just kidding. I would not kill someone just because I felt like it. |
| DarthMarasmus06-06-06, 11:07 PM | I've never purposefully killed a PC, but there are only two reasons I can justify: n+1) Like Shaggy said, willing and heroic self-sacrifice. It really does cheapen it if the DM says "Oh, well you're only mostly dead, Miracle Max can fix you up in a jiff." Of course, I've only been in the position to do such (as a player) twice, the first time the stupid halfling mage charmed me and made me run away with the rest of them. The second time, my insanely epic bronze dragon ranger was fighting toe-to-toe with Cthulu and detonated the magical equivalent of a billion megaton nuke, killing both himself and Cthulu to protect the world. n+2) Like Gingerbread Man said, the player is about to leave for quite a while and wants to go out with a bang (which would be a little more realistic than "having him fade into the background" for several sessions). In fact, I may use that idea with one of my players (who's playing a paladin, but is sick of it and wants to play another character). Other than those 2 instances and completely accidental death, I cannot justify a DM's "right" to kill a player character. If I killed people at work every time they repeatedly made me angry or annoyed me, we would have no customers and no other employees. If killing people for being annoying cannot be justified in real life, we don't have the right to do so in an RPG since a character is quite often an extension of our personality. By arbitrarily killing that character, we are killing a little bit of the other person, and such is not our right. |
| mojorooks06-07-06, 10:46 AM | The best reason to kill a PC. Because Mojorooks is playing him. this is by far the best suggestion I've seen. Unfortunately when I DM, I don't get the privilege to kill my own PC. That being said, I should make myself more availble to play in people games so they can truly know what its like to kill Mojorooks' PC. I also have been in games where the DM WILL NOT KILL YOU no matter what! I prefer not to play in those games. IMHO, I think it's important to kill a PC for the right reasons on occasion. PC's need to die every so often to keep the fear of death in them. |
| Wood06-07-06, 11:22 AM | actual 10) i got my players to kill one of my PCs so they could instal the head of vecna. The HEAD of Vecna? I was only aware of a hand and an eye. If thats an idea you came up with on your own then I bow to you sir. Kudos. "Here dude hold still we gotta lop off your head to see if this works." pure genius. |

"kill the PC as many times as possible in overly-excessive gorey deaths" is for kids. |

"Here dude hold still we gotta lop off your head to see if this works." pure genius. thank you. i did indeed make it up and that was a really fun game. they spent like an hour trying to convince the player that he'd be fine. and then they played rock paper scissors to see who would do the chopping. and when it was on they had to figure out which spell to use and after several days and exausting the wizard several times(i told them it was an arcane spell cuz otherwise it would have taken way too long) the wizard was finally like "well i only have one spell left. I cast prestidigitation on the body" and i brought the player back to life. |
| Tormsskull06-07-06, 02:16 PM | "not the accidental dice kill." This is the only reason, though accidental should be replaced with random. |
| Serielle06-07-06, 04:21 PM | When striking the player down shall cause him to be more powerful than you could ever imagine. |

Hmm here's what Google has to say about the Head of Vecna (http://users.tkk.fi/~vesanto/link.fun/stupid.pcs.html) There is even a Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vecna#Head_of_Vecna) about the fabled Head of Vecna, and it appears in the moduleDie Vecna, Die! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Vecna_Die!) |
| bholdr_mage06-07-06, 04:34 PM | 732) Because the player can't count. 237) Because he's dyslexic and screws everything up. 17) (i really think that's what we're on now) because he continuously stares at your wife's cleavage. 18) He smells. Like his half-orc. 19) He ate deviled eggs and drank beer before he came. (have you ever smelled the farts from that. Ugh. 20) He's annoying 21) She's 400 lbs and doesn't wear clothes. Of course, these examples are killing the PC, not the player. It's just in hope that their player never returns. And use these options if you aren't civil and don't ever plan on talking about problems with other players. Unless it's number 18 or 21. In which case you had better move and hope the player doesn't find your new address. |

In response to this evidence.....I DIDNT KNOW AND I STILL HOME BREWED MINE. lol edit: Mine wasn't actually a hoax. it was an item and it did work. it was a progressive power item and i never actually finished writing it up because the next session was our last one. it was an intro to dnd type campaign |
| The_Unfan06-07-06, 05:14 PM | 21) She's 400 lbs and doesn't wear clothes. I thought this was supposed to be a list of reasons to kill a PC, not reasons to attempt to get a hot date with your players. |
| Sulaco06-07-06, 05:52 PM | Since you eliminated the dice (aka. random chance, poor luck) as an option: 1) Cos the PC's actions, as adjudicated by the DM within the D&D rules, lead to a situation where the PC's death occurs. Huh. I guess there is only one reason. Funny, that. |
| Sikyanakotik06-07-06, 06:28 PM | thank you. i did indeed make it up and that was a really fun game. they spent like an hour trying to convince the player that he'd be fine. and then they played rock paper scissors to see who would do the chopping. and when it was on they had to figure out which spell to use and after several days and exausting the wizard several times(i told them it was an arcane spell cuz otherwise it would have taken way too long) the wizard was finally like "well i only have one spell left. Next you'll be telling me you're the guy who attacked the gazebo. |

| metamind06-07-06, 09:02 PM | 21) She's 400 lbs and doesn't wear clothes. The player or the character? |
| Archmage_Vall06-07-06, 09:03 PM | 23. Because the PC does something incredibly stupid, like touch the king's throne when specifically told by said king's guards not to approach said king. I've done the childish repeatedly-kill-the-annoying-PC-to-earn-brownie-points-with-other-players thing, but only after the player nobody liked wasn't in the group anymore. I'd bring his PC back as an NPC and let the remaining PCs beat the snot out of him. DM (me): Oh, hey, look at this--it's a halfling cleric riding a sheep dog. PCs: INITIATIVE!!!! DM: *fudges roll* What do you know, the cleric rolled a 1 and is flat-footed until he gets a turn. The sheep dog takes its turn to bark at you, though. Good times.... |
| mojorooks06-08-06, 09:33 AM | 2) It's unfair to enlist a Player to do your dirty work here. That's what NPC's are for. 3). "You can't solve an OOC problem IC". If you need to ask a player to leave, his PC also just leaves. "kill the PC as many times as possible in overly-excessive gorey deaths" is for kids. It's not unfair to enlist PC help as long as they are more than willing and understand the situation and consequenses, etc. It's only unfair if the DM in question thinks so. You think killing a PC repeatedly in an overly dramatic death is for kids, but you have no problem sitting around a table with a bunch of adults playing 'make believe'? hmmm... People that don't have any childishness left in them are boring. |

In all fairness, it is a rather obvious joke, so it's easy to see how different authors could come to a similar conclusion. Just don't try to patent it, I'm sure someone some where can claim prior art. ;) |
