| Polymorph09-25-04, 12:25 AM | Many DMs have trouble generating a City, so an extensive list of things to include should help them out a fair bit. I'll start out with a few generic ones: 1)Tavern :D 2)Temple 3)Graveyard 4)Circus |
| Tarlac-Redclaw09-25-04, 12:59 AM | One thing that makes the city stand out in the PC's mind, such as a large statue to a famous dead hero, an odd feature of the landscape, a notorious group that calls the city home, etc. |
| boyecho09-25-04, 01:33 AM | a really... deep... well. with a portal to the abyss in it :D but honestly? i'll continue your list. 6. theatre! 7. guard tower/station/post 8. crazy town beggar/fortune teller/mystic OR town drunk 9. library of sorts |
| Gilgiga of the Hunt09-25-04, 01:45 AM | 8. crazy town beggar/fortune teller/mystic OR town drunk Correction "and/or" |

The scared guard who you can intimidate 14. The dumb guard who you can bluff 15. The halfling innkeeper who knows waaay too much 16. The simple looking building with a horrible secret inside 17. Stray dogs 18. Wandering chickens 19. Street urchins 20. Random guy selling imitation Rolex Waterclocks 21. Meat on a stick stand 22. Town square 23. Patrolling guardmen |

| JabberWocky09-26-04, 12:15 AM | 56. Two soldiers drinking in the bar. This may not amount to much, but make sure to include them in EVERY SINGLE CITY. They look exactly the same, but know nothing of being in any other cities the PCs mention nor do they admit to having any relatives that look like them. |
| fatal error09-26-04, 12:32 AM | 57: A mage guild |
| DougC09-26-04, 12:33 AM | 58. Banks 59. A Magical Medieval City (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=1678) from Expeditious Retreat Press. |

Scriveners |
| Lxarth09-26-04, 01:06 AM | ...a large statue to a famous dead hero. Two soldiers drinking in the bar... I like these...instead of just a list of things that can be in a city. A specific thing or event in the city. In my city there is a half-elf (Master)Weapon-Smith (he only makes and buys masterwork weapons) and the Players know his stuff is good. |
| psionichamster09-26-04, 02:25 AM | cramped, dirty, and were/dire/horrid/etc. rat- infested...2nd level, here we come!!! something going on in the "underworld" the pc's never have to know exactly what, but "something" is going down, and soon! bounty hunters, or spoils (fur, leather, claws, scales) hunters...arrogant, cocky ones fight club. his name was Robert Paulson... pixies stealing wallets left and right...damn pixies... the hamster |
| Harmor09-26-04, 02:36 AM | 82. WANTED poster with a PC on it :D I had that happen to me once!!! Boy was I surprised. Apparently an eye-witness to a crime that I did not do, pinned ME to it because I was leaving the scene of the crime. What actually happened was that I was investigating a thief from a jewlery store in the Merchant's Quarter. I happen to find, what I thought, were the culprits, but instead just bumped into several thugs, which we dispatched easily. Unfortunately one of those 'thugs' was this woman's son and she saw me leave the scene!!! Goes to show you that you should use a sap instead of a two-handed sword to resolve some situations. 92. A mage's Raven familiar (a Raven can talk). |
| Student Of The Mind09-26-04, 04:08 AM | 93. Barph the Barkeep! It's late as they enter the town, and just down the street from the main gates is a sign that says "The Keg". As they enter they see the largest nastiest half-orc this side of their planet, his breeches hanging down to expose his stinking crack and the filthy white cotton tunic up over his wart covered belly. This is the only tavern open, and the only inn that has rooms available. Barph insists on cooking for the adventurers, and is stubborn enough to ride out any arguement. If the characters see him cook, they will notice he has a bad habit of picking his butt. :) I had a character make a vow of hunger until he left the city...God that was great! |
| Ssussunriyh09-26-04, 05:33 AM | Near where I live, there's a bar & grill called "Tim's Ugly Mug." (Yes, the owner's name is Tim.) Best name for a bar I ever ran across IRL... 94. An aspiring (read: wannabe) bard of flamboyant manner and foppish fashion (but little color sense), who tries to get some new material by questioning the PCs about their doings. He's pushy in his inquiries, and when he later repeats the tales in poem, song, or epic story form, he gets all the details wrong and paints the PCs in the most embarrassing, insulting, or otherwise unfavorable light... but his audience loves him, and they'll react with outrage if the PCs threaten him in any way. |
| Tevandel Surefacet09-26-04, 10:43 AM | 95. Corner table in a random bar near the center of town that has a map of the local low level dungeon burned into it. A DM actually did this to (for) us - the locals called it the WEG (Where Everybody Goes) and found it endlessly amusing to see low level shmucks make a beeline for the WEG - then find out that there was a map on a table in a bar. No list of monsters mind you just the physical map - and it was not always correct (the same locals thought is a great trick to change the map occasionally). 96. A dungeon "Where Everybody Goes" for apprentice level adventurers. 97. Retired (successful) adventurers to give the newbees hope. 98. Retired (unsuccessful) adventures to take away that hope. (AKA beggars) 99. High class bordello that specializes in the wealthy – all the “girls” are succubae and they are draining/charming the nobles. 100. Insane local man that insists this is all a game in someone’s imagination and that “We are all just figments of a deranged mind”, or “D&D is EVIL the work of the DEVIL I tell you” (but can’t tell you what D&D is exactly). |
| krichaiushii09-26-04, 11:13 AM | 101. The PCs follow the crowd to the city square, where the monthly criminal executions take place. Low and behold, one of their friends/allies/family members is up on the chopping block. People are hung (or other more gruesome death), then bodies are burnt and ashes scattered to prevent coming back as undead. 102. A caravan of foreigners arrives in town, bearing unique/rare trade and very strange customs - perhaps even strange races. What else do they bring? (Disease, trouble, certainly adventure!) 103. The city fountains start spouting blood instead of water. Why? 104. A city sculptor wants to make statues or paintings of the PCs. It could be legitimate, it could be sinister. It might be a ploy to waste vain PCs' time. For sinister, read the Portrait of Dorian Gray. 105. Visiting PCs hear a bard song in the local tavern about their exploits! Unfortunately, the song takes events out of context and spends most of its humorous verses on the PCs' failures and shortcomings. The crowd loves it and may support the bard if the PCs start something. 106. A bungling spy leaves important information with a PC, thinking him/her his contact. The information can be all sorts of damaging, as everyone starts gunning for the PC as the truth gets out. 107. The new tavern has the best beer in town. So good, in fact, that other beer-sellers and tavern keepers are losing almost all business except for elves. Investigation finds that a bit of magic is used in the brewing, but is it for sinister purposes or just to make a buck? 108. A serial killer is targetting people fitting one of the PCs' descriptions. The souls are being destroyed as well, so little can be done in the way of divinations. Is the PC the next victim? 109. All of the animals have left town - even the rats. They disappeared in the course of the night, as did the resident druids and anyone else who could communicate with animals. Why? 110. A festival is going on similar to Mardi Gras - everyone wears masks, so identities are hard to come by. Crime, however isn't. PCs witness one (or are victim to one) and have an opportunity to solve it. As the assailant(s) had on a mask, the exact identity is tough to determine - let alone chasing him through crowded city streets at night. |
| DougC09-26-04, 12:07 PM | 94. "Brave Sir Robin, Bravely Ran Away...." :D ;) 100. Insane local man that insists this is all a game in someone’s imagination and that “We are all just figments of a deranged mind”.... Believe it or not, I actually used this in a game once, but it was an effect on one of the PCs who used The Rod of Wonder. :D |
| Polymorph09-26-04, 06:04 PM | Wow, this is more than i expected! keep em coming :D 111. Farms arround town are set on fire while everyone is sleeping. Someone in the local inn is continously trying to convince everyone that the "evil" wildelfs living in the forests arround town are the ones responsible for it. The PCs find out that he is beeing bribed to do so. When the PCs confront him, even he himself does not know who he is getting his "payment" from or for what reason. |

| Timespike03-31-05, 10:55 PM | Many DMs have trouble generating a City, so an extensive list of things to include should help them out a fair bit. I'll start out with a few generic ones: 1)Tavern :D 2)Temple 3)Graveyard 4)Circus A city watch that the PCs are loath to tangle with. | ShadowDragon868508-25-05, 02:35 AM | 302 - A waterfront district - seven hundred metres into the water. The district is build on stilts, pontoons, out of boats lashed firmly into place, whatever. Most vertical place in the city, because most of the buildings stand about a half-story to a story above the waterline, and the roads, which are indeed strong enough to support a whole caravan, hang at the water levels, they're piers. Various other walkways, rope catwalks, etcetera, crisscross the area in a chaotic fasion... Y'know what, I think I'ma take this idea an' run with it, so here's s'more. 303. A broken down ex-paladin with a very high charisma score, drinking light alcohol in a bar and lamenting in very poetic, flowery language, the loss of his paladinhood, and the loss of the thing that caused him to lose his paladinhood, his succubus lover, to another Paladin's sword. 304. A Succubus paladin. 305. A beligerant beggar - if you tell him to sod off, he verbally abuses you. If you give him more than a copper, he abuses you for not giving him more. Even if you shower the SOB with riches, he abuses you. He abuses everyone in the district for money, repeatedly, going up to many people and begging, then cursing them when they refuse to give him money. Have him pester the PCs. Twice. In as many minutes. 306. An orc, sleeping amidst a surprisingly clean alley. He simply wishes to sleep, and he insists he is not a beggar. |
