Have two party members' children dangling over spike filled pits, with only enough time to save one. 17) Then get out the gavel and start playing trial judge for child neglect and accessory to murder. 18) Have every single person in town glare at the party, only to realize that they had some food on their face. |
| MortalPlague10-11-04, 07:09 PM | One of my players wanted to do a solo adventure as a beefed up Rakshasa. I started him off in a small town... which just so happened to be holding the Annual Paladin Convention. :D |
| Knight-Triumphant10-11-04, 07:14 PM | Wow, that's harsh. I don't even allow Rakshasas, for ^ reason. Too much good in the world, and to be traveling with a chaotic good party... |
| MortalPlague10-11-04, 07:21 PM | Well, yeah. That was why it was a solo adventure, and it was only cause the PC kept badgering me about playing one. It was quite amusing when he found out there was a Paladin Convention... :P And then spoke to some powerful NPC paladins along the way... |
| rwarner370110-12-04, 01:04 AM | one of my pc's was a monk who loved to run on walls and jump everywhere. o, when we had to get past the minotaur gaurdians of a cave/dungeon he jumped over them and stood on the wall looking down. they just happened to have levels in monk and jumped the twenty feet to pummel him. after he feel to the ground unconsious the minotaurs accepted a bribe. He stopped taunting after that :D |
| Chronomodra10-12-04, 01:24 AM | The favorite evil 'trap' I used against my players was a 'Fountain of Infinite Wealth" If you threw coins (or anything else) into the fountain, the object(s) would be doubled, thereby allowing you to clone objects infinite amounts of times. What the party doesn't know is that the duplicates are just magical conjurations/illusions that go away after 10 minutes or so. The objects placed in the fountain are teleported to a nearby dragon's lair (a much easier way for the dragon to get money than raiding caravans), while the two conjurations are produced and quickly pocketed by the characters. Obviously magical items no longer function after being doubled (as any conjurations produced would be as mundane as they are fake), but other than this the party shouldn't be able to tell that their items are being stolen. ...that is, until the next time they check their pockets and realize that they've lost all their money/weapons/thieves' tools/etc. along with the 'doubles' they had created. |
| darczero10-12-04, 03:57 AM | 22) Have the BBEG travel with the party under the guise of Undetectable Alignment for a while. Works especially well with Paladin; when you reveal your evil alignment, he loses all powers for willingly associating with you! And by that time, you know all their tactics (justifiably) and weaknesses, and can use anything you want against them. |
| darczero10-12-04, 03:59 AM | 23) Extremely Good character (Exalted or Paladin) discovers that one of their ancestors was a demon worshipper. Specifically, their father. And he's still alive. (only works with players that actually RP their characters) |
| Bartleby_GoC10-12-04, 11:22 AM | To add to the Fountain of Infinite Wealth idea, when the PC reaches in to get the item, it duplicates him too. Of course... each copy is a little off, much like a photocopy. Each subsequent copy is one step further removed from the originals alignment, with identical skills/abilities. Bartleby |
| Callista10-12-04, 12:00 PM | 22) Have the BBEG travel with the party under the guise of Undetectable Alignment for a while. Works especially well with Paladin; when you reveal your evil alignment, he loses all powers for willingly associating with you! And by that time, you know all their tactics (justifiably) and weaknesses, and can use anything you want against them. Hmmh, wouldn't that be "unwillingly" since the Paladin was duped? Or at least "unknowingly"... necessitating no more than a minor atonement? At any rate: 24.) Monsters that attempt to knock out and capture the PCs rather than kill them. They hate that. 25.) Kender. 'Nuff said. |

Then to get down they have to find their way through a dungeon that is made completely out of force. And every few feat randomly there is a hole in the floor or a missing wall. 28) The NPC assassin uses colossal scropoin poison. 29) make a monk with worp touch,--at first level. 30) To Quoth a PC of mine, "Rocks fall everyboby dies!" |
| silvermist10-12-04, 04:38 PM | these are both NOTtraps 31. i cant take credit because i didnt make this up but: http://www.advanceddungeonsanddragonsadventures .com/html/places_and_traps/pt_not_a_trapped_door.html its the best. 32. another i heard of was to have a sentient door in a dungeon with the password written on it. the door in sentient and you have to trick the door into saying the password. the password is the name of whichever god is the most evil in your world. so far the only ways people have found to trick the door into saying the password are to either yell a chant about the god "pikachu, pikachu" and hope the door will yell with you "yay pikachu" or to blatantly mispronounce the name of the god until the door corrects you. the former makes you look like an idiot (and possibly break your alignment) the latter might risk the wrath of the god him/herself. also 33. send the pcs to a gnome castle. where everything is, of course, built gnome sized. |

| VirgilCaine10-15-04, 09:56 PM | It's something from...Zork? It's an old computer game reference. |
| friedmad10-15-04, 09:57 PM | this recently happened to me: show up at the door of the guy youve been getting assignments from, and he hands you an arrow with your true Elvish name on it even though anyone who would know your true Elvsh name has been dead for over 60 years..... |

| Mahni LeGuin03-25-05, 03:24 PM | 42. Pick a obscure, uncommonly used word for an object... say, gazebo (that one's been done, but it's an example). Include it in your room/place description. Enjoy the fun. "Run, it's a whistling zephyr!" 43. A trap from another old computer dungeon... The party comes across a sign in a passageway that read 'The way is dark' Shortly after that is a second sign 'Though torches lit' third sign 'Watch your step' Then have the pit trap. |
| tiercel03-25-05, 04:56 PM | 44. Have a plague of werewolves in the area. Have the PCs discover a lone survivor of the last adventuring party to go after the werewolves, and have him itching for revenge. If he convinces them to agree to help him, make sure he supplies silversheen to the PCs so they all have a chance to damage the werewolves. Have him lead the PCs to the place where he last encountered the wolves, and while they "are still 15 minutes away" from that site, have the werewolves ambush the PCs while strung out on a narrow forest track through dense trees. Have the werewolves be, in fact, Ogrish Dire Werewolves instead of normal, boring werewolves. Have the guide, who is in fact the Dire Werewolf leader (albeit human, not Ogrish), with a substantial number of Bard levels and maxed-out ranks in Bluff, morph into his own hybrid form. Let the PCs figure out on their own that the "silversheen" is normal water, possibly enhanced by nystul's magic aura. As the PCs try to "circle the wagons" and the Ogrish Dire Werewolves move in, have the Werewolf Bard let loose with an howl that Inspires Courage in his soon-to-be-heinously-full-round-attacking packmates, then sing a song of Silence onto a handy tanglefoot bag, and smack the party cleric with it. If this is still not evil enough, throw in a handful of allied worgs, a gauth (minor beholder) ensnared by the leader's use of charm monster, and have everything take place on Ravenloft. --------- Oh, Chronomodra, I like the "fountain of infinite wealth." Heh heh. Heh heh heh heh....:evillaugh |
| silvermist03-25-05, 05:36 PM | man i was hoping this was actually about evil acts. for example what the bbeg should do to make the pcs really hate him, aside from juggling kittens of course. |
| Plastik03-25-05, 06:08 PM | Knowing the PCs that I deal with, the fountain of infinite wealth would end when one figured it out.. By jumping in. He'd be in the dragon's lair, and then run out (being a pansy). Then he'd go get a local wizard to make Symbols of Blasting on small rocks that are sensitive only to dragons. He'd pur the rocks into the water, rinse, repeat. Pretty soon, that's one dead dragon. |
| Lazzmaniandevil03-25-05, 07:01 PM | 45. The PCs run into a very dishonest merchant that is going from town to town, selling small magical items. He suggests to the PCs his oil of keen edge, which happens to be on sale this week, at 500gp. What the PCs bought is in reality an oil of rusting! Oil of rusting: This oil is made to look like an oil of keen edge, but actually has a quite opposite effect. This oil is not actually magical, but is more of a bio-alchemical substance so to speak. Its principal ingredient is extracted from the antennae of rust monsters. It has the property of turning metal into rust almost instantly. Magic items are allowed a reflex save against DC15 (the DC17 of the rust monster is reduced by 2 because it is weaken by the preparation). The difference between this oil and the real one is almost undetectable (spellcraft check, DC35). To complete the trickery, a Nystul's magic aura spell is also cast on the false oil. If someone try to use detect magic, they will see the aura of a normal oil of keen edge (faint transmutation). If someone try to use identify on this item, he must succeed a will save (DC11 + relevant ability bonus of the caster) or be fooled by the Nystul's magic aura spell. A succesful will save identify the item as non-magical, but don't allow one to know what it is. The effect of the Nystul's magic aura spell disappear after 1day/caster level. Caster level: 5th Level; Prerequisites: Brew potions; Nystul's magic aura; spellcraft skill; at least 5 ranks of craft[alchemy]; Market's price: 220gp; Cost to create: 110gp + 4XP; Market's price(when sold as an oil of keen edge): 750gp. Weight: - |
| Soepkommetje03-25-05, 07:39 PM | (46) I'm throwing my PCs two pseadonatural advanced rust monsters as a lill' surprise (they will be warned beforehand though) What will not know, is that they're just the pets of the real enemy probably already aware of their presence ^^ Knowing the PCs that I deal with, the fountain of infinite wealth would end when one figured it out.. By jumping in. you can make it only work on unattended inanimate objects. 25.) Kender. 'Nuff said. I was cleaning my room when I came across some old 2nd edition ravenloft supplements. When looking in one of them, on the first page I saw, it said (it was a monstrous compendium) Vampire, Kender It took a while to grasp the idea |

Enjoy the fun. "Run, it's a whistling zephyr!" 47) The above one's shamelessly old, everyone knows it. The trick is to play off that fact. Have some random baddie cast animate object on the gazebo. DM: "You see a gazebo on top of the hill" PC: "We all know this one, we go and sit in it" they all begin to look smug DM: *rolls to hit* "It kills the wizard" ah, happy days |
| Chthonic03-25-05, 10:39 PM | 48) XP penalties for bearded characters (easy way to spot an anti-Dwarf DM) 49) The party's halfling has to walk across burning coals to prove their worthiness to an NPC... DM: Roll to see if you make it. PC: [rolls, only just hitting their target score] DM: You make it to the other side... PC: Yay! DM: ...but your hairy feet are on fire... PC: Oh... DM: ...and it's spreading to your trousers. 50) The ice-cube tray left in the PC's room doesn't have ice in it - it's a tray of clear baby gelatinous cubes. 51) Only remind players that they forgot to buy extra provisions when they're 3 game days into a trek across the wilderness, thereby prompting a rapid descent into canibalism. 52) The swaggering bard finds The Codpiece of Castration but only manages to identify it the round after putting it on. 53) Asking players if they've got extra dice handy and when they ask why, just saying "Doesn't matter" and smiling. Evily. 54) Melf's Incontinence Arrow 55) The only optician in the village is a Mr B. Holder 56) "You stand in the village square, surveying the brutal, merciless destruction you wrought this day. You're musing on how easily you put down every last man, woman and child of the werefolk village - you'd expected them to put up more of a fight. As your gaze drifts from one dismemberd family group to the next, you catch sight of the village sign... and remember that the guide said turn left at the fork in the road, not right." |
| Naicin03-25-05, 10:58 PM | i like #56, its a good one, i think ill use it :D |
| twad03-25-05, 11:16 PM | 57- actually have them wanted DEAD for their crimes and hunted down. 58- have someboddy smarter than them lure the pcs into a very, very well planned trap (like have them accused of a crime they did not commit, the baddy is the caster who is casting discern lies/*zzone of thruth) 59- have PCS pay for what they break down in a dungeon/tavern/ ect. |

Dm: You see a man who is unmistakeably a litch is staning on a platform about ten feet over the now waist deep sticky ooze, he is the target of you quest and is wearing the robe of white dragons skin. Player (SOrcerer/Wizard/Druid):(Once they come up) I rmember [the assigner of the quest] saying that the robe provided weakness fo fire so... Dm: when you cast the spell a spark hits the black gooey substance... it was oil... now burning oil... and the litch is the only one safe... |
| Meshakhad03-26-05, 01:31 PM | 61. Have the PCs enter a town where, unbeknownst to them, it is illegal for private citizens to own magic weapons or armor, and have the guards confiscate the weapons. When the PCs attempt to recover their weapons, they are told that all magic weapons that are confiscated are sold to another country. 62. Have an extraplanar being (any alignment, but neutral would be best) cast his new spell, summon adventurer - and have it summon the meatshield. Now the meatshield is in a dangerous battle for which he will recieve no XP, and cannot attack the caster to take revenge. 63. Shipwreck the PCs on a desert island. Don't do this if they have teleport. 64. When the PCs return to town to sell their loot, it turns out that bandits raided the town and stole almost all the money. |

| TheChilliGod03-26-05, 11:10 PM | Miniature's aren't very tasty. I know from experience. 67: Have it so that the BBEG escapes from combat after being smashed around a bit (not dead, tho, keep that in mind), probably teleporting and taking all his awesomely valuable gear with him, leaving the PC's wounded from the fight and treasure-less. To make it 10x more worse, say that he says something about kidnapping one of the PC's girlfriends. This one's in my campaign. 68: Have a sundering trap. Break the PC's best weapon/shield/armor, then have an ambush by trolls. Big ones. 69: Send an ochre jelly or something like that against a party that only has slashing/piecing weapons. It takes them a dang while to use rocks and sword-flats instead. |

| pkrerc03-30-05, 11:56 AM | sorry for my stupidity but what is a grue? There was this old old computer game called Zork and in it there were these creatures that lived in dark places called grues. If you didn't have a torch with you then you'd soon be eated. It eas very annoying. To say the least. 1 more for the list of evil things: having your PCs who are running laps around the city arrested for speeding. (Happened to me as a funny way for the DM to end the campaign) |
| Rocketmonkey03-30-05, 04:22 PM | Have an ornate, locked door in the dungeon with a magic trap that can be triggered any number of times and that goes off every single time a PC touches the door. Make the trap irritating rather than immediately lethal--burning hands is a good one--for maximum frustration. Eventually the PCs will work out a way to get through, either by disarming or dispelling the trap or just by blowing the crap out of it. And that's when you reveal that the door leads nowhere and was just set into solid rock to distract pesky adventurers. |

The party rogue didn't even get the idea to search the walls where he could have found a pressure plate. After a few hours of puzzle solving (the PCs finally went for a brute force approach, trying all possible combinations!) the party mage disintegrated the ceiling on the upper floor to create a shortcut. (It was the tower of an illusionist gone mad who really wanted to keep intruders out and had mastered the art of letting people believe something that wasn't there). |
| Carn Vandoril03-31-05, 07:57 AM | (80) This one really happened: Our DM let us fight an old black dragon for almost 2 hours RT. When the dragon eventually died.. the body disapears. Our rogue: damn it was an illusion!!!!! Cleric: we are not even injured?!!! Wizard: ? I am not dead? Then another old black dragon enters the cave. Rogue: ha! its an illusion! DM: nope, this one's real! You are all 'fatigued' and suffer the -4 penalties. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: |
| arrianna03-31-05, 12:12 PM | I had a PC once research a spell called "exsanguination" It basically teleports all the blood from the body of the target to 3 feet above said target's head. They are literally showered in it. Fort save negates. Sucess yeilds 2d6 con damage per round until healed magically. |
