At the risk of incensing the posters who were here two years before christ was born, I have gone out on a limb, and figured this thread didn't exist. If it does, I'm sure some wise scholar will come along, and let it be known.

I'm starting this one because of another thread, one that turned out to be a very specific case.

I'd like to see more general scenarios on this thread-- and specific ones too. As a matter of fact, I'd love to see anything that you folks write on the topic.

I'll start:

1. Naw baby, I don't think the elf is hot. My character does...
--best said with a stoned, **** eating grin stamped on your face for laughs.

2. THE ORLANDO BLOOM FEINT

Everytime the GF is about to enter Self-Destruct mode, grab the remote that is set up to a TV that will play nothing but random images of a hot guy from the movies in random romantic scenes or without his shirt on running down the beach or whatever. Depending upon the generation your GF/Wife/Significant Other grew up in will determine which male actor you should have on hand. She will ultimately get distracted by the actors rippling chest and charmingly befuddled mindset or whatever the female folk go for these days that she will be pacified and the game can continue.

3. BACK RUBS

This one will cost some money, but it works REALLY well. Before the session begins, have a hunky male massuese spend the entire session giving her back massages and foot massages and what have you. Also, keep a thing of Bom-Boms handy. She'll be so pampered and loving of you that she'll believe ANYTHING you have to say, even if it WAS you who just TPK'd everyone.

4. DRUGS

Hey, if she's high, she'll let the world just roll on by. :D

Can't think of anything, but I agree that back rubs are definitely the way to go.

5. A fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies.

I'm afraid to say if anyoneone tried to use #2 for either gender in the group, the person who tried to use the tatic would likely wake in the hospital 2 months later with every bone in their body broken...best not to risk it :)

I'm going to go out on a limb here, completely ruining the flow of the thread, and try one.

6. Get a girlfriend who isn't a tool about everything. This includes:
-a One that doesn't moan about not being given your 100% undivided attention during activities which require you to divide your attention among a group of people.
-b One that doesn't expect to be showered with gifts constantly, including in game.
-c One that is able to sort out the difference between reality and fantasy well enough to not get offended by every single in character comment made.
-d One that actually likes playing for the sake of playing (NOTE: You may substitute here, one that has no interest in playing and isn't really whiny about you spending one day a week killing imaginary dragons with your friends).

That is a totally acceptable way of keeping a S.O. from ruining your game-- basically you're saying solve the problem before it happens.

Here's another one I've just thought of recently:

7. Don't let your S.O. see a post you just made concerning a subject much like this one.

8. Make sure he already has something else to do, such as a LAN party, or something.
8b. Or you could just let him play too... :D

I just wanted to reiterate this quote.

I think it's silly that people blame their significant others for situations that they set up themselves.

As a gamer, I've had boyfriends that don't like to play (I know, shocking!). I enjoy playing with my husband emmensely, as it's a time that both of us can sit together and do something we both enjoy.

I have somethings to add myself:

#8: ASK the significant other if s/he really wants to play.

#9: Don't get upset when s/he wants to spend time with you outside of the game.

#10: Realize that different people are offended by different things: the guy who was laughing it up about the size of the NPC's boobs is suddenly sullen and quiet when you make a comment about the chained-up male villager.

#11: For God's sake, realize that it's a damn game! Have fun and don't take things too seriously. "What? You just said 'My character says:'! You're a terrible role-player and are only here because you're screwing the GM!"

I was going to write "Hope it helps", but this thread isn't really meant to be helpful, is it?

I don't think that it's always about blaming, or even getting upset. Actually, I think it can be quite amusing when someone's partner wishes to play in the game just to keep them company.

After all, the game is a social activity that is supposed to be enjoyable for multitudes of people. The amusing part is that some people intrinsically don't seem to get "it", that unique quality about a person who is a gamer. You can sometimes point gamers out in crowds of strangers, and know that they get "it". "It" is unspoken, but very real.

Some people are gamers, and some aren't. It's always an interesting predicament to see a non gamer trying to game to be with their partner. Sounds like you, and your husband are lucky in that you both enjoy the same hobby.

It's meant to be helpful, funny, cathartic, whatever. Since I'm posting, I guess I should add another one, huh?

12. No baby. I wasn't out gaming all night. Where was I? Never you mind. Look at this new kitty I bought us!! Isn't he adorable? (See how I totally shifted the conversation there? Pretty neat, eh?)

Edited-- I didn't add the quotes in at first.

As a footnote to #12 there...

13) Sneak out to the bar after sneaking out to game. Then she won't be ****** about you gaming behind her back. :D

For some reason, I included have no clue on what quality time is. I used to work all day with my wife. Then we would eat dinner together, and watch the few shows on T.V. that we like. Then I go to spend an hour on the computer, before I sleep next to her all night, and now I'm that bad guy because I don't spend enough time with her. When I say I am with you all day and night she throws out the "quality" time thing. What the frig? Basically I'm just an arse for even thinking of doing something alone for an hour.

14.) (Or whatever number is next) Make sure you aren't going into the game with a prior argument/disagreement/discussion still luming in the air. Or else the other members of the game will become judges or the peasants throwing rotten food at the accused.

...peasants throwing rotten food at the accused.

We don't need a prior argument for that at my table!

15) Make use of your amazing talent with your tongue.

By which I mean talk to him/her and convince him/her to let you play in peace. Yes, that's what I meant...
