1. they whine when they cant start out with adamantine full plate and a flaming great ax at level one.
2. they insist on raising an army of golfers to defeat all there enemies.
3. They constantly feel the need to throw the d20 the minatures on the battle grid

Player: "I'm gonna hide in plain sight."

Dm: "Okay, the creature looks directly at you, and lunges forward with its claws extended, slashing and ripping at your flesh."

Player: "But...I'm hidden."

- When they read/talk/throw things when I describe the BBEG. I'm bad at describing, but come on...

- When they make a etremely big number out of something completely obsolete aka "Roll to see if i'm getting drunk!"

- When the following happens:

In combat, PC rolls to hit opponent..

PC "18 on the dice"
Me "You hit"
PC (ignoring me) "Pus five BAB, that's 23, plus another 3 for my strength"
Me " That's fine, you hit"
PC "And I'm using my +2 dagger, and flanking"
Me (Getting anonyed now) "I already told you- YOU HIT"
PC "Oh, and the bard's singing," looks up "So that's 31, do I hit?"

Drives me crazy!!!

Just as bad, when a player whom you know has a problem with math, rolls to see if he hits..

PC (looks down at his dice, then up at me) "16"
Me (knowing that's a natural 16) "Plus.."
PC (looks down at his character sheet for his melee attack) "Um...."
Me "Your melee attack bonus for the shortsword"
PC "Plus six."
Me (screaming in my head, "DO THE DAMN MATH!!!!") "Which is....?"
PC (grabs calculator) "22"
Me "You miss" (sigh of satisfaction in my head)

With NPCs have a weird mircaluouse thing happen to them, somehow their AC jumps +50. Wierd HUH.
i find stuff like this tends to make em less impressed with my PCs

PC hands the DM a note (dear dm: I want to pick that paladin's (also a PC) pocket and steal his holy symbol. Thanks, annoying CN rogue.)
DM rolls dice, rolls eyes, ok annoying rogue you somehow succed in this task although i'm not sure how.
PC annoying paladin: ok I want to prey now for devine help on wether or not i should do anything.
DM ok but you can't seem to find your holy symbol.
PC paladin: I go on a killing spree.
PC annoying rogue: I have your holy symbol and will give it back to you only if you give all yours and the clerics gp.
PC annoying paladin: ok i hit the rogue with my sword,
PC annoying rogue: you can't do that i'm not evil
PC annoying paladin: but you stole my holy symbol! SMITE!!!!
The two bicker about it for a while, pc #3 and #4 will start looking in source materail for a ruling, a full report will given (wanted or not) next session. pc #5 will take a nape, pc #6 and the DM smoke a jiont. 30min later we get back to gaming.

The CN rogue who thinks that his aligment gives him licence to be the party A$$hole. and mess with everyones characters.

The paladin that figures if he preys enough times i'll tell him how to beat the hole dungoen in the most effeint maner, or that figures that becuase he is a paladin that gives him the right to be a wandering Judge dread.

But above all else i hate the munchkin!!! I've seen everything from 56 skill pionts at level 1, to a class that used two weapon fighting with fullblades at first level! That and everytime the words;psion, munckins hand book, gestalt, or dragon magazine, are uttered i get a cold swet.

Okay, you and Ellie I sympathise with - but this one is typical of almost every game we have lately:

*rattle rattle rattle*
*plop*

Player: [adds up total] Okay, I got a 32!

DM: You miss -

Player: Wait, I forgot to add in Bless, 33.

DM: You still miss -

Player: Oh, wait -forgot some more.... uh, 34?

DM: Miss...

Player: and oh yeah - uh, 36?

DM:

PC: I rolled a natrul 20
DM: Confirm it
PC: I confirmed with a 19
DM:Roll your attack
PC:I got a 12+6 X 3 is...
Dm; *sigh* it's 54. Well there goes my boss battle

I guess that's better then PC's who don't listen or can't add. My barbarian PC try's to eat every things brain for some odd reason.

I know this got on my DMs nerves when I did it, but then again, he shouldn't have been surprised. I was playing a half-ogre barb (what a surprise!) who kept the heads of the creatures he killed in "glorious battle" i.e.: something lasting more than two rounds. We get to an ogre den and with the Dwarven Defender watching my back (a feat in and of itself), we wipe up the Ogres. Finally, we get to the Ogre Mage. The battle lasts ten rounds and my ogre declares he's gonna take the head, like he's done for the past five sessions. My DM smacks his head on the table when I clip the head on my belt.

He wanted the regeneration to kick in so he could have a recurring BBEG. He wasn't very pleased with me.

I played a game once with a guy who played half-orc barbarian who was a complete and utter cannibal. He once had to dispose of a guard's body, and decided that eating the whole thing was the best way to do so. :twitch:

The party walks into a corridor, and as they do walls start to close in on them. I tell them they have 2 minutes to work out a solution. I start my stopwatch, and they go into a huddle.

Then, after two minutes and several scuffles they come out, and tell me the wizard is going to use Flaming Hands to melt the wall so they can get out  .

Next, they come to a spinning blade trap. The switch to turn it off is on the roof in plain sight. Yet, without even considering looking for the 'off' switch, the wizard trys to time the spinning of the blade and jump through. He dies. Then the fighter also wants to try the same thing. He dies as well. The rouge then wants to take the dead wizards staff (heavily enchanted, worth 7500 gp), and stick it in the blades to stop them. The staff gets shredded, and the magic on it explodes, killing the rouge.

Then the Elf desides to use his Mirror of Minor Teleportation to get him (And any living party members next to him) past the barrier.

What really annoys me is when the party confronts a BBEG whom they are obviously not meant to kill.

Fighter: I draw my sword and shout--
Me: He punches your sword. *Rolls* it shatters like a cheap toy.
Rogue: Hide check! *Rolls* ...37!
Me: He gives you a copper for your performance and turns away.
Paladin: Smite Evil!
Me (exasperated): Guys, hold it. We're ten minutes into the adventure. Maybe you shouldn't try to kill him. :twitch:
Fighter: Damn you and your impossible adventures!

@ Thanqol: Yeah, my PCs can be pretty dense, too. At one point they argued for half an hour over a poem-riddle, then a friend of mine (not dense, thankfully) showed up: "Hey guys, it's probably...."

Sometimes I think your IQ drops 50 points when you play D&D. ;)

ME: Ok, the enemy is closing in, I need initiative rolls
PC: How do you roll initiative again?
ME: Look on your sheet where it says initiative
PC: hmm.... oh right there it is

After playing weekly for four months.. you would think that would be easy to remember...

When pc's resort to open real life combat I concider the session over. Some may feel this adds flavor to the game, but personaly I think it's a moodbraker.

ME: You grab for your pouch filled with GP that you REALY needed.
PC: Give it back....
ME:No, it's stolen, by you-do-no-know-whom!
PC: I don't care, give the gold pieces back.
ME:No. They are gone.
PC: Then tell me the thieves name and whereabouts so I can go kill him.
ME:No? Offcourse not. You failed some check.
PC: *Grabbing the d4 dice, wich is kinda sharp.
ME: What are you going to do with that dice?
PC: Stab you in the eye you! GIVE THE GOLD PIECES BACK YOU ****ER!
ME:* Getting stabbed in the eye and nuts with a d4.
PC: GIVE THEM BACK YOU MEAN DM YOU!
ME: Ok, just d..d..don't stab me anny more.
"You sudently feel your gold pouch filling up with...... a can of whoopass!!! "
*As my eye was gushing out blood, and eye-matter I reached for the d20 wich is kinda big and threw it into his mouth, wich he choked on. And eventualy died, though, killing him required an silly amount of dices, as well as whole dicebags and several hits to the head with a big couch..

I realy hated that, and DO think that's the most annoying session of all time.

Bumbleroot, yeah, I know how you feel. I, however, have some extremely annoying people as well, and I have a sign outside my house wich says "-- days without a dead D&D player". The sign never gets into double digits. The mourge will give ya $20 for a dead body though.

ILL ONLY PLAY IF I AM AN EPIC HARECTOR!

God, I hate that book. Also,

DM: You fail to open the lock
PC: I try again
DM:FAIL
PC:AGAIN
DM:FAIL!!!!
PC: I won't stop until it opens.
DM: Fine, it opens, suddenly, and you fall right through, getting hit in the face with 8d4 spikes, a 3d12 fireball, and a 20d20 kick in the balls.
PC: oh..

The most annoying thing my players do to me I dub 'revisionitis'. We've been playing 3e for so long that no 2e, much less 1e, rules and phrases should still be cropping up in their heads.

"You don't see anything with your infravision because you don't *have* infravision. You have low-light vision."

"Halflings are SKINNY."

"I'm a rogue, not a thief. I don't steal things."

"Elves live about 550 years, then they die."

"No, you don't 'save vs death magic', it's a Fortitude save."

"There's no such thing as a Fairy Dragon."

"Of course there are Dwarven Wizards!"

You get the idea.

P.S. Vash of Lost July ... IIRC, once you try, and fail, to pick a lock, you have no hope of success until you pick up another rank of Open Lock ... so he's gonna be there for a very, very long time, since he won't level up by squatting in front of that door. ;)

I think Players that post things like this.........

"I do this to annoy DMs - do you find it annoying?"

........are annoying.

Also, Players that have posted things like the above that get offended when people say 'yes, you annoy me' - that annoys me as well.

But it is also funny - and kinda sad.

Cleric: Ok, im gonna hit the troll with my two warhammers
Me: Ok roll for attack
Cleric: I hit
Me: No, roll to see IF you hit...
Cleric: But i said i hit...?
Rogue: *Picks up D20 and rolls for cleric* He got a 16
Cleric: So i deal 16 damage. Yes!

I think that's with Spellcraft and certain tasks (not too sure which, though.)

With Open Lock, you can try again and again and again and again and again and again...

Basically, you take 20, so you'll only need more ranks if the DC is more then your modifer + 20 :)

Speaking for myself, I don't think I really cheese my DMs... I think that sometimes we just get a little away from the story that they've written out in their heads.

I know that there are players who try to get under their DMs skin and that's just wrong, man. Everyone's there to have fun, so, if you're reading this, don't act like a moron. Let everyone have fun... not just you with your slightly retarded sense of humor.

They're at level one, and the gaurd is holding a +3 Great axe, with a Ring of invisability. He also has 4 bugbears hidden in the room!

Ironically enough, I'm pretty sure it was in 1st and 2nd ed. that you couldn't try again until you went up a level. It's been a while since I've cracked a 2nd ed. book, though, so I'm not sure off the top of my head.

I house rule that on a natural 1, the lock-pick is broken and the overall effectivness of the lock-pick kit is lessened (-2 (per broken tool) to all lock pick attempts using that kit until the tools are replaced).

This way this is at least some risk involved when trying to pick a difficult lock over and over again.

Of course, the rogue in my group, has now managed to get her hands on an enchanted lock-pick kit, so the tools are far less vulnerable now :)

yes they are both Lesbians in a 24/7 Ds relationship.

and yes they like to poke fun at eachother in game for things that happen to them outside of the game.

So a level 20 rogue with maxed out pick locks skill, skill focus, etc, etc, still has a 5% chance of breaking his equipment in your campaign?

I hope you mean on a natural 1, that is also a failure, and even then, it seems incredibly harsh, or do you have fighters break their weapons on a natural 1, wizards accidentally fireball their spellbooks about once a fortnight, and so on?

Hes right...it doesnt make sense to pick on a rogue. a natural one should not be an automatic failure in a skill check.
cambric

07-22-04, 06:36 PM
Natural 1's are NOT automatic failures as natural 20's are NOT automatic successes. According to the PHB, this is explained.

Best example I heard was if a person used their "jump" skill to jump to the moon and rolled a 20, is that going to acually happen? No, not even in the DnD world. And if a expert lock is 50, even if you roll a natural 20, if you don't have a total of 30 skill points, you do NOT open it. (Of course, the DM does have the final say and if they House Rule that 1's fail and 20's succeed, than of course that over-rules the official rule.)

If a Rogue is worried about breaking a pick, at 20th level, then there is a problem...and if so, take 10 or 20. I currently am 9th level Rogue/ 2nd level Spy Master and I have 20 skill points total for open lock. My DM did put an amazing lock, for reasons he knows, and I did roll a 20, with a total of 40 and was stunned to find out that it didn't open. But I accepted that, it adds to the gaming experience.

I can't belive I didn't think of this annoying behaviour until now:

I get very frustrated when I have a player who is totally incapable of paying attention if the game isn't revolving around them. It gets especially annoying when the rest of the party comes to an important decision and the "problem" player isn't paying attention.... and then said player starts arguing "why are we doing that?"
trapspringer

07-26-04, 12:43 PM
I can honestly say that none of my players have ever done anything that aggrevates me. The occasional thing that makes me sigh, or break down in laughter at the stupidity of it all, but never upset. They simply don't act like retards. I have played with other players who do this crap. I have even seen my players do this kind of stuff to other DMs, and because of this fact, I must assume that most of these things can be handled easily by the DM.
