| DM Ront03-12-05, 12:46 AM | Everyone has seen a PC try to do something crazy a few hours into a late-night gaming session. What are some of the craziest tricks your players have tried? 1. The party rogue ...when you have a elf in spiked armor... it makes the half-orc think "morningstar" 2. Saugian heads ... a sundered vorpal sword means lots of really lousy throwing weapons 3. The wizard's spellbook ... actually had a wizard almost defeat a vampire by flashing the page with the Sepia Snake Sigil in front of the vampire |
| Bandit_Raist03-12-05, 02:07 AM | oh I got some... 4. Bugbear tibia After a fatal fireball that melted the armor the poor beast was wearing to the bone the local barb made good use of it. 5. Marbles A bag full of marbels at the top of the worlds largest building can make for a pretty intresting climax to a 1st lvl. party. 6. rats the idea that throwing infected rats at the enemy just did not work fast enough. 7. building At higher levels that barb. from #4 was known to rip the support beams from a building and run. 8. volcano After getting the bright idea that they needed to throw large amounts of goblin powder kegs into the volcano BulgVoor, they set off the dormant fire belcher destroying all sylvan life on that single island, think Krackatoa. |
| DM Denubis03-12-05, 02:27 AM | 9. A kobold. 10. Two kobolds stuck together. 11. A fork. (Seriously.) 12. Flask of oil. 13. Shackles. |
| MortalPlague03-12-05, 04:13 AM | 14. Quall's Feather Token: Swan Boat |
| BladeBoy03-12-05, 08:40 AM | 15) the Fighter's fullplate armor. (they were caught unprepared, and threw armor at the goblins and worgs. It was pretty funny, they keep an extra fullplate around for just that occasion now) |
| Callista03-12-05, 11:33 AM | 16.) A mirror. Seven years of bad luck, indeed... 17.) A quill pen, used by a surprised wizard against a goblin rogue. The goblin ended up fighting with a quill pen sticking out of its eye. That didn't work very well... 18.) A package of rations they got from the dwarves. Let's just say dwarven rations, be they bread or meat, are about as hard as the average chunk of granite... 19.) An animated spoon. Seriously. "Make a grapple check versus your weapon..." |
| psionichamster03-12-05, 12:03 PM | 20) Superdense alloyed crowbar (about 150 lbs or so) called the key to the city 21) Divine Might-ed cleric (same char as 20, beat him to death, then used his body as club/projectile) 22) airships...good kinetic energy weapons for city-wide destruction 23) zombie-bombs...see 22, replace airships with med-sized fireball-laden zombies. voice activated, command word: "Boom-Kadda-Boom" 24) cavern ceilings/walls...in an underdark city 25) floating islands (see also #22, 23) 26) chests of CP...cuz, they're cheaper, and heavier, than big lead weights 27) chain-and-ball leg manacle...used as projectile in airship-to-airship combat 28) giant balls of family-retainers, launched from trebuchets...mostly dead 29) towers of magic...big tower: big boom 30) carts, mules, wagons, assorted farm-implements...also launched from trebuchets...i guess the treb's really the weapon, but the cows were funny yeah, my players are weird namaste, the hamster |
| kuhTHOOloo03-12-05, 12:22 PM | 31. A fish. The druid had cought a fish just before he was ambushed by a couple goblins, and he proceeded to smack them around with it. They died, he went up a level and took exotic weapon proficiency (fish). He took it to town, and had a mage cast gentle repose with permancy on it after he had inserted a stick into it's body. Before each battle, he casts shillelagh on the fish, and smacks the enemies with it. I know gentle repose wouldn't work for long because of the smacking around, but I let it slide because of the shere novelty of it. |
| BladeBoy03-12-05, 12:35 PM | wow, never had a PC waste a feat like that before.. |
| Teshub03-12-05, 12:52 PM | 32. A monkey. I had a PC grab a monkey familiar from a wizard and start bashing him with it. 33. Mantacles. One time an enslaved PC was chained to another slave (NPC) and being made to pull a heavy 2-wheeled cart down a steep moutain path. They freed themselves from the cart, but not each other, and used the chain to close line the nearest guardsman. This sent the three of them hurtling some 80-100 feet down the steep snow covered terrain. 34. An impaled body. A PC was travelling on an enemy occupied road where his own people had once lived. Along this track his enemies had impaled several hundred 'rebels' as an example to all who might oppose them. While hiding in a ditch my PC got the idea to use the impaling pole in order to take out an unsuspecting mounted courier who was racing alone down the road. It was one of the most horrific scenes we ever described together during gameplay. 35. A female pig in heat. Used to break a siege. After several months and while their enemies were eating well outside the town walls the PC lord watched his own people starving to death. The besieging lord (NPC) could sense the end was near for the townsfolk and his own force's morale as well. And so he got all his remaining pigs together and had them driven in a pack around and around the town walls while the besieged looked on drooling with desperate hunger. The PC lord had a female pig in heat secured to the drawbridge, waiting until the pack of pigs was driven before the gates he ordered the drawbridge opened. The pack of pigs raced onto the drawbridge to get the female, when the drawbridge was lifted enough food was secured to break the siege. |
| capn03-12-05, 05:52 PM | 36. A bucket - not D20 but had PC grab a bucket and critically hit someone with it and kill them |
| Mirikon03-12-05, 06:12 PM | 37. Baddies had grabbed the warlock's hands, but were surprised by the hideous blow knee to the groin. |
| TheUnknownZombie03-12-05, 08:32 PM | Drunken Masters always manage to find something useful at hand: 38: His shoe. Used against a small horde of goblins. 39: A barrel of rum. Thrown into the face of an ogre, followed by... 40: A lit torch. :headexplo 41: Fishing hooks. Used as makeshift shuriken. 42: A disguise kit. Grabbed it off the rogue and smashed it into the tiefling following them. 43: A light shield. Not necessarily an unconventional choice, but most amusing when said shield is hurled at the fleeing wizard, hitting him in the back of the head and sending him tumbling off the bridge into the river below. |
| Scaer_Vieliss03-12-05, 08:32 PM | 44. Shotput with gnolls. My psychic warrior used a dead gnoll as a thrown weapon once. Didn't work too well, as the body only went a little over ten feet and missed his target. |
| Shocker25003-12-05, 09:00 PM | 45. A portable hole. Thats right, open a portable hole, then chuck, or bull rush someone into it, then close the hole. Wait ten minutes ruflly, and then he comes out sophacated. 46. Fishing equipment, with a hook at the end, works kinda like a kusari gama (check DMs guide at oriental weapons) 47. A barrel this one was a nice idea though, at the top of stairs with baddies commin up, chuck that barrel Donkey Kong style. |
| mcnoo03-12-05, 09:05 PM | 45: a portable hole and bag of holding Not the most amazingly original combination, but when the bag is suspended and hidden over the hole, and the hole is covered by a sheet illsuisoned to look like the floor with a gold piece in the middle, and the sheet is tied to the bag sothat when someone walks over to get the gold piece, they fall in the hole, followed by the bag, instant death no save. Only works on an epic campaign where you have to cash to do it. Do NOT use this in a back alley in sigil when you expect your target to come along being chased by the party fighter, there's the slight risk a small child will come skipping down the alley, blissfuly unaware....and i'd rather not say more to preserve my rogue's dignity. |
| mcnoo03-12-05, 09:08 PM | 47. A barrel this one was a nice idea though, at the top of stairs with baddies commin up, chuck that barrel Donkey Kong style. We did similar, but we dropped a barrel of alchemist's fire off the top of a tall tower onto a sizeable crowd of peasants at a city fair. Can anyone say napalm strike? (my necromancer teaming up with the barbarian to distract the party paladin long enough for us to ditch him) |
| Mirikon03-13-05, 08:26 AM | 43: A light shield. Not necessarily an unconventional choice, but most amusing when said shield is hurled at the fleeing wizard, hitting him in the back of the head and sending him tumbling off the bridge into the river below. Who else read this and immediately thought Captain America? C'mon. I know you did. :) 49) Barbarian lost his weapon, thanks to your friendly neighborhood rust monster. Party let him borrow a crossbow. Barbarian broke crossbow using it as a club the very next encounter. |
| Meisterbrau03-13-05, 09:26 AM | This was in the Alternity Stardrive system but it was funny nonetheless. The party was fighting its way off of a ship. Earlyer on the seshayen in the group (think thin flying grey alien thing) had been taken out (not dead just non ambulatory) and was being carried by the werren (think rabid wookee on crack). They encountered a group of battle droids right at the exit of the ship with the werren in the lead. Well cause of the tight space and because he was carrying the seshayen he couldnt break out his chukrrina (think huge halberd) so he just set to beating the droids down with his friend (who, thanks to modern medical tech barely survived). I think that was most likely the most amusing weapon ever used py a pc of mine. The other was of course the "magical brick of flying". :D |
| MJ the Prophet03-13-05, 10:11 AM | 52 (I think): This is more of a crazy use of a weapon. We've got a goliath fighter in the party. He carries two weapons; a large falchion (yay for powerful build) and a kukri. We started at 2nd level, and I'm sure two of his feats were Imp. Grapple and Imp. Un. Strike. So, enormous guy with a huge sword. First combat: owlbear and griffin escape from cages. His response: grapple the owlbear. He didn't get to the griffin in time to grapple it. Next combat: walking through the swamp, attacked by three crocodiles. Of course, he attempts to death roll the crocodile, again grappling. After this combat, our war cleric proceeds to suggest that, knowing a little about fighting, the big guy use his big sword. So, third combat: approaching a cave full of hobgoblins. The goliath pulls his sword, the cleric smiles and nods. Round one, the goliath wins initiative, and thus the first thing to occur is the flinging of said sword. Despite the improvised thrown weapon penalty, he hits the hobgoblin for 20, chopping it in half, and pulls his kukri. Next round, he proceeds with the grappling. Our cleric chewed him out over that one. Goliath's defense: "Well, I used the sword!" Cleric: "That's not what I meant!" |
| clarkvalentine03-13-05, 11:14 AM | I was running a Middle Earth game, and one of the PCs unhorsed a Nazgul with a twenty pound sack of potatoes. |
| MasterRookie03-13-05, 11:59 AM | 53. Half orc barbarian armed with a portable ram (my friend wanted to have this one) 54. Half orc barbarian armed with a ten foot ladder (hey jakie chan pulled it off) |
| Ekranoplan03-13-05, 01:03 PM | 55. A slinky. 20 foot reach weapon. If you hit the enemy you can opt to let go of the slinky, and the enemy becomes entanbled as per net. Any roll of a natural 1 automatically destroys the slinky. Dmg- 1D2 56. The ability to forge documents. Not a weapon per se, but in the world of high-powered intrigue and politics it is deadly as a zweihander on the battlefield. |
| Didge03-13-05, 01:13 PM | Had a character who didn't have a lost of spare cash but knew the party was going to fight vampires and undead. So he checked with the local sage about how to fight undead and vampires, grabbed a bunch of wooden sticks (free from the woods outside the city), sharped them, and then bought a bellows pump and filled it with water. He then asked the party cleric to make the water holy so that he had a super soaker ready for all those undead. Ironically the adventure had absolutely nothing to do with undead and my character spent the time wandering about armed with a bellows pump, afraid to use it because he didn't want to waste it before they fought the undead and the vampires. This happened to a friend in an old 1e version of D&D. She had a magical bow and got seperated from the group and locked in a room face to face with a lich. The bow was the only magical item she had and the DM had stated before that arrows shot from the bow are not magical weapons. She ended up dead, but she did manage to smack the lich about with the bow in melee for a couple of rounds. Had another friend who launched himself out of a catapult towards a dragon. He missed, and took a crap load of damage from the fall...but darn if it didn't look cool. |
| XBobbis03-13-05, 01:32 PM | 57: A Depressed Paranoid-schizophrenic talking sword. (Hey, you said crazy) |
| DM Ront03-13-05, 09:13 PM | 58. A Crossbow... that fires crossbows ... an odd idea a player had to double the range of a crossbow and use it as a sort of sniper rifle. 59. The medal that the players got for saving the city ... this was what they were planning to fire out of the crossbow |
| Kovok03-13-05, 09:43 PM | 60. One of the pcs was a high level wizard that relied solely on his spells. So when he ran out of spells during a dungeon crawl and didn't have a back-up weapon, he joined the melee, hitting the draco-lich with his spellbook. |
| KillerOdin03-13-05, 10:43 PM | 61. Once smited a vampire with a table, then picked up another one and did it again. The joys of powerfull build. |
| Radin Of The Justice03-14-05, 01:06 AM | 62. not a weapon but in my first map the elf ranger talked me out of buying a portable ram. So we come to a locke d door and the dm says it would be an easy fix if we had a batering ram. So i did what any other adventuerer would do in my possion and used the very elf that assured me a battering ram would only slow us down. |
| TheUnknownZombie03-14-05, 07:06 AM | I was running a Middle Earth game, and one of the PCs unhorsed a Nazgul with a twenty pound sack of potatoes. :evillaugh Now if the Lord Of The Rings films had scenes like this, I may manage to stay awake all the way through one. |
| ECOM03-14-05, 07:29 AM | 63) I was in a party once with a rouge named Charlie. He would commition a wizard to make him potions of fireball (5d6) in glass viles that were desinged to expolode on impact. He would carry 20 or so on his person. The party was exploring an underground temple when they came accross a drow war band at the bottem of some stairs. The party barbarion picked up the rouge and threw him at the drow shouting "Sorry Charlie" 12 viles break on the rouges fall (60d6 damage) First time i had someone use another party member as a weapon. 64) Had a fighter rouge in a game once whos only weapon was a bow. well the string broke on the bow and rather than ask for another weapon started poking people with an arrow +1 for 2 point of damage per hit. What made it real annoying was when the wizard cast improved inviso an the rouge now she did 5d6+2 points of damage on a hit with an arrow. |
| MasterRookie03-14-05, 09:36 AM | :evillaugh Now if the Lord Of The Rings films had scenes like this, I may manage to stay awake all the way through one. Loser :pbbbtt: |
| Osiris Memnoch03-14-05, 10:34 AM | 64) A freind of mine once generated a hlaf-ogre with a "magic club." It was actually just an uprooted tree. The "magic" part of it were "runes" that read "no-trespassing".....in common. 65) After making a commotion in the west tower fighting a guard, more guards where coming up the stairs to meet the party. The rogue takes the already unhinged door and literally surfs the door down the spiral stair to plow the guards. Of course he botched the balance check and fell off the door almost killing himself with fall damage. Still, the door took out the guards. |
| TheUnknownZombie03-14-05, 02:08 PM | Loser :pbbbtt: Aww, come on.It's Nine hours of walking/riding punctuated with fights. The Nazgul kept waking me up though (I'm thinking of using a recording of their scream as an alarm clock). |
| OamuTheMonk03-14-05, 02:17 PM | 66) Oil-soaked bedrolls versus an Ochre Jelly worked pretty well (followed by some lit torches). |
| Alynn03-14-05, 02:27 PM | 67) High Cha Female Sorceress, they make great distractions for lonely guards, mix in some sneak attack arrows from the darkness, and we have free entrance into the stronghold. 68) Kettle of boiling water. Water first, smash next. 69) Harpoon + Rope = Reinactment of Mortal Kombat. Became part of the character normal routine. Even took the weapon feat. |
| Thanatos0203-14-05, 02:34 PM | 70) A Ladder. Ye gods, this thing is mighty. Had a PC develop a special War-Ladder with spikes, took Exotic Weapon Pro. : Ladder A Ladder ended up getting statted out like the following: 1d6 20x2 It's ranged out to 10' if used normally, 5' if used as a double weapon, with +2 bonuses to trip and disarm. With spikes, I think the thing ended up doing d8. Then the player got Use Oversized Weapon and opted for an even larger ladder, which I allowed because it was awesome. |
| Flamberge03-14-05, 03:34 PM | 71. Large sack full of 600 copper pieces. Bandit wanted it; he got it! Lucky critical hit killed him on the spot. Stupid git.... |
| zerubabel03-14-05, 03:52 PM | 72)a key of hardness(a key that was enchanted to never break) tied to 10 ft of string. z |
| Balin03-14-05, 07:46 PM | "Stinking Cloud" followed by a burning arrow - the DM ruled that the cloud was flammable, and the resulting flashfire left the enemies nice and toasty. Bonus XPs for that one! :) |
| kliate03-14-05, 11:40 PM | 74) You ain't seen nothing till you've seen a wolf critically hit with a quarterstaff wielded in it's jaw... |
| Hal Horn03-15-05, 03:04 AM | 75) Giant bees, y'say, eh? Giant Bee hive, y'say? I say... 11 pints of oil, and 10 Subdual damage of my 11 Hp, and bad smoke burns for my PC 76)Copper coins with Explosive Runes inscribed on them.Of course, the party mage (I was DM here) used them. And, of course, I had some fun with mirrored rooms and a modified version of the spell (You see it, you get hurt). ~Hal |
| Dalfor Silent-Step03-15-05, 05:53 AM | 77.) While adventuring with a party to destroy an evil temple, the necromancer suggested to us that we kill a Roc, stuff it with bottles of alchemist fire and then after casting raise dead on it, soar it into the temple. (All of this transpired while the DM, was out of the room going to the bathroom.) We decide that since Rocs were scare in the area we were in, we would go and investigate the city and then prepare to storm the temple. (DM returns.) We inform him that we are prepared to go into the city and investigate. While continuing our trip to the city the DM informs us of a random encounter, he describes the creature and a gigantic bird of prey, some 60' in wing span.....(Players all jump up from their seats simultaneously shouting!) WE ATTACK!!!! The temple never stood a chance. |
| wagner_9803-15-05, 09:21 AM | 78.) A Magical Folding Boat in a 10' hallway leading up to the top of a tower. The boat effectively sealed the hallway from the advancing guards and the uber monk. It was my random starting magic item in a land locked game. It helped our characters get away, just not the way we thought it would. |
| DMsDelight03-15-05, 10:21 AM | I once had a half-silver dragon PC used as a battering ram against a 8 inch thick iron door (which was trpped with a lightning bolt spell, see Ministry of Winds Adventure on the D&D site). All the rest of the members of the party knew it was trapped, but no, the half dargon INSISTED on breaking down the door with a run-smash. He had a strength of 28 (Bull's strength, etc.).......and rolled a natural 20 on his strength check. I had to give him something for it, so I said he left a huge crack in the door, with a dent that was able to see the treasure inside. He sets off the trap, and promptly nearly dies. Plus, he was the cleric...to Pelor :P The fighter ended up healing him. Oh, the irony PS-The cleric had almost more combat skill than the half blue dragon fighter. |
| Regwon03-27-05, 09:26 PM | 79) how about a half-ogre, half-minataur, half-red dragon, half-orc (dont you just love thayn cross breeding) wielding a blood orc, wielding a halfling chef and a goblin thats wearing white cuffs and a bowtie. |
| Galstaf, Sorcerer of Lite03-27-05, 09:37 PM | 80) An enormous wooden spoon. A friend of mine played a kobold cleric. The name of his deity escapes me, but his holy symbol was listed as a wooden bowl. So the kobold procured a large one and mounted it on the end of a quarterstaff. Not only did he slay many enemies with his "spoon," he also slept inside it. |
| angryman03-27-05, 09:42 PM | Actually a friend of mine played a Dwarven paladin who carried the last relic of his destroyed church around- a huge cathedral church bell. It was enchanted and dealt extra sonic damage. Hilarious. |
| ECOM03-27-05, 10:07 PM | 82 A retibutive strike with a fully charges staff of the magi. |
| Stafir Ortnev03-27-05, 10:27 PM | One I've only heard suggested...as in..the Player would like to do this. The other happened. Number one..the one that did happen. Party..had a dwarf and a half orc. The dwarf had a tendancy to ride/be carried by the half orc...basically to go faster. Big spider came up..half orc is AFRAID of spiders..but not run away afraid..more like..smash afraid. half orc gets innitiative. First thing that pops out of players mouth? "I swing my dwarf!" The second, as I said, is something a player would like to find a way to do. Baby chucks....two babies (preferably alive), tied together and used as weapon. Basic idea was to do something like turn them to stone..or stone skin them...somehow make it so the dmg wouldn't kill them. And just..well..bludgeon the enemy to death with em. I still say such a weapon should do sonic dmg too. |
