| JerBar12-20-06, 01:51 AM | How about a quick list of items that might be found in a dungeon that would be really bad to turn out to be mimics. Does a mimic have to be a treasure chest? Of course not, there are a few suggestions in the MM, but how about a few funny or scary items or features to throw in as mimics in disguise? 1: Outhouse 2: Statue of a nude dwarf 3: A bridge over a deep pit |
| CroBob12-20-06, 01:53 AM | 4. A door. 5. A bed. 6. A box of chocolates. |
| darksyngr12-20-06, 01:57 AM | 7. a weapon... especially one the party members want 8. part of the floor which happens to be over a spiked pit 9. A cloak 10. a bag/sack |
| JerBar12-20-06, 01:59 AM | Keep in mind that a typical mimic has a volume of 150 cubic feet and weighs about 4,500 pounds according to the DMG. *Checks again* whow, heavy. 11. A part of a stone wall |
| CroBob12-20-06, 02:01 AM | 12. A Throne. 13. Part of the ceiling. 14. A catapult. |
| tsuyoshikentsu12-20-06, 02:06 AM | 15. Your mom. (No, seriously, think about it. An ultra realistic statue of your mom...) |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:11 AM | 15. Your mom. (No, seriously, think about it. An ultra realistic statue of your mom...) 16. for that matter a statue of any person the party may know or trust. Real confusion factor here. (You keep my mom out of this and I'll keep out of your mom :P ) |
| CroBob12-20-06, 02:12 AM | 17. A large altar. |
| darksyngr12-20-06, 02:13 AM | 17. A length of rope to the next level... make it 100 ft long. |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:14 AM | 18. In a room with about 20 treasure chests and a sign saying "This room contains one mimic." The mimic is the sign. |
| Amon_WinterfallIV12-20-06, 02:16 AM | Well, since the mimic speaks common: 19. Animated Object 20. Convience Machine And there's also: 21: Meat disposal. (Good for Mimic--free lunch) |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:19 AM | Outside a dungeon: 22: A small boat sitting beside a river. (With lots of tracks leading up to the boat, but none on the other side of the river) |
| CroBob12-20-06, 02:23 AM | 23. A caravan wagon. |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:24 AM | 23. A caravan wagon. That one is going into my campain ;) |
| CroBob12-20-06, 02:26 AM | That one is going into my campain ;) I'm probably going to use it now that I thought it up, meself. |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:32 AM | 24. A working fountain (The water comes from a small rivlet coming in from the side of the cavern.) |
| darksyngr12-20-06, 02:35 AM | 25. A pile of gold |
| memberZ12-20-06, 02:36 AM | 26 Large pile of platinum pieces clumped into what looks like a dragons horde. 27 A boat sitting on a what looks like an underground river (illusion) aka 'tunnel of love ta eats ya' |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:37 AM | Unguarded treasure always makes my PCs nervous, they would most likely find some way to test it first. 28. A half open secret door leading to treasure, now that's worth investigating. |
| darksyngr12-20-06, 02:45 AM | Unguarded treasure always makes my PCs nervous, they would most likely find some way to test it first. 28. A half open secret door leading to treasure, now that's worth investigating. Yes, but there has to be that one who is fully aware they are going to get reamed but has to try and pick it up to make sure, lol. |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:50 AM | In that case: 29. A frackn' big bar of gold. Completely different now 30. A strange machine or lever with no obvious function. You KNOW someone is going to get curious and touch it, there is no way it will be completely left alone. |
| CroBob12-20-06, 02:58 AM | 31. A delapidated house along a lonesome, winding, mountain road. |
| JerBar12-20-06, 03:01 AM | 32. A dead dragon. *Hey, lets skin it for dragon hide armor.* |
| JerBar12-20-06, 03:02 AM | 32. A dead dragon. *Hey, lets skin it for dragon hide armor.* |
| Always-Late12-20-06, 03:07 AM | 33. A keg of beer. |
| Sphyre12-20-06, 03:38 AM | 1: Outhouse 2: Statue of a nude dwarf I like those :D 6. A box of chocolates. The group wizard in my campaign carries those around. He's been charmed more than anyone else in the group (Mindflayers, Orge mages, I'm sure there's others). He carries them around to offer whoever he finds esspecially friendly. I think the mindflayers prefer a different kind of snack though :plotting: |
| Penchant_Conjurer12-20-06, 03:42 AM | 34. Mimic Eats horse waiting outside dungeon. Mimic replaces horse. 35. Mine cart if in goblin territory. |
| CroBob12-20-06, 03:45 AM | The group wizard in my campaign carries those around. He's been charmed more than anyone else in the group (Mindflayers, Orge mages, I'm sure there's others). I think the mindflayers prefer a different kind of snack though :plotting: I think a box of chocolates that a mimc is mimicing would more closely resemble an entire crate of chocolates. |
| JerBar12-20-06, 03:59 AM | Mmmmm... Chocolates... ew, sticky... d'oh, pointy!! |
| JerBar12-20-06, 04:35 AM | 36. A big red button. Who can resist pressing a big red button. 37. The area in front of a locked door. |
| Knight991012-20-06, 04:48 AM | My personal favorites are the bridge over a pit (Let go for TPK!) and the outhouse. (That would be scary as hell for the poor guy who goes in.) 38. The object of the entire adventure. Just when they think they've finally found the princess/ancient artifact/whatever macguffin is driving the plot...OOPS! It's trying to eat them! Make this happen AFTER the BBEG for extra fun. |
| bholdr_mage12-20-06, 08:17 AM | Once, I had a doppleganger working with mimics. The Doppleganger was a butler to a strange old house that had killed all of it's inhabitants (along with the mimics) and everyone who visited. He started by asking them all to sit at the dining room table while he went upstairs to fetch the individual they were looking for. 39. The chairs to the dining room table are all mimics; already pulled out. All the character has to do is sit down. Rump roast anyone? :D |
| pierow3712-20-06, 08:28 AM | an adult toy. But really, a magic item. Wouldn't that be annoying? Or better, a trap in an allyway. |
| Lt_Murgen12-20-06, 08:40 AM | I acutally used this one- The heroes are sent to rescue a noble from the lair of a medusa. They know he has been turned to stone, and are prepared. Entering the gallery, they find several statues that look like him- a few carved from stone by the medusa (it was her hobby), the noble, and a mimic. When they pulled out the scroll of 'stone to flesh', the mimic attacked, and went for the scroll. |
| Epicweaver12-20-06, 09:25 AM | double post |
| Epicweaver12-20-06, 09:27 AM | #17 doubled #32 doubled Piero got #42-44 #45 in previous post... Um, stone statue of a mimic? What does a mimic "normally" look like anyways? A chest? #46 A bathing fountain (gargantuan mimic)... Yes, take off your clothes and hop in. Yum. |
| Wopple12-20-06, 09:31 AM | an adult toy. At 4,500 pounds!!!?!?!?! dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyymn! |
| krumthi12-20-06, 09:45 AM | #47 An altar of the Pc's Cleric. #48 Coffin of the Vampire that they are trying to kill. #49 Front gate of the city. #50 Floor of the Local Tavern |
| Wopple12-20-06, 09:48 AM | #51 Swing set #52 fireman's pole #53 the floor |
| wrecan12-20-06, 10:04 AM | #54 An inn #55 A vampire's sarcophagus. #56 A stone golem #57 A well of many worlds #58 A large battering ram |
| JerBar12-20-06, 02:18 PM | We could also add silly things here: 59. A monster much more scary then the mimic. *Mimic: "Damn, I just scared away my lunch" |
| Sphyre12-20-06, 02:43 PM | #54 An inn I've seen that before. That's great :D |
| Sunic_Flames12-21-06, 08:30 AM | 60. An attractive member of the opposite sex as the majority of the party. :P |
| wrecan12-21-06, 08:58 AM | I've seen that before. That's great :D Thanks. I was really proud of that entry. |
| Sphyre12-21-06, 10:21 AM | Thanks. I was really proud of that entry. I hope to use it someday :D I particularly like the Gazebo and it's reference to the story about someone who was wary of a Gazebo. |
| Tusalu12-21-06, 10:27 AM | 61. A treasure chest (you could never guess that it would be a mimic) |
| boozerker12-21-06, 05:24 PM | An entire world (for epic campaign). A World Mimic -- anyone care to stat that one? :D :D |
| Grandpa Gamer12-21-06, 10:53 PM | 63. The cave opening. (a really big mimic . . .) |
