| keyunp08-15-07, 06:28 PM | How to make the Tarrasque more dangerous with as little change as possible. This not to see how power you can make Mr. T. so please no add ing templates. 1. CR=+0. Give it an Int of 10. This simple change alone would screw up half the plans for killing it on these boards. 2. CR=+3-7? Give it 6 to 9 levels of sorcerer. Eschew Matrials, Practiced Caster (IIRC). Just imagine the look on you players faces when it cast Inviability, and then cast fly after that. Or if they think hunting it will be easy give it polymorph. And don't forget the familiar with 429 HP. 3. CR=+3+? Give it 6+ levels of warlock. Eldrich spear, Fell Flight. 4. CR= ? Change Regeneration to Fast Healing. When it dies (By whatever means) its skin grows many blisters after 1 round. The round after the blisters form, they burst, sending globs of fleash flying through the air (48 times to be exact). When they hit something they form into a small version of the Tarrasque with only 1 HD (all specials stay the same). Its size increases every 10 HD. It gains 1 HD every time it eats something its own size. |
| StevenO08-15-07, 06:40 PM | The final issue of Dragon Magazine (#359) has the ecology of the Tarrasque. In it they mention the this bad boys only weakness is the inability to deal with flying creatures that it can't reach so something as simple as an always on Ring of Flying would be a big power increase. 5. Treasure: Any item that given the Tarrasque flight. |
| Zerchai08-15-07, 06:50 PM | One of the absolute biggest changes that I've made to the Tarrasque in my games is that the Tarrasque is actually an ancient primal evil (much like one of the devil or demon lords) and that the Tarrasque that walks the Prime Material is actually only an Aspect of the Tarrasque. The true Tarrasque is a level 0 deity at least, and is a being of absolute destruction, the endbringer. And, to reflect that the deities haven't done anything about him, an ancient law protects the Tarrasque from divine destruction (much in the same way that deities can't enter Sigil.) It gives the tarrasque a little more weight, and also opens up lots of customization since it isn't truly a unique being anymore. That way, your players can't cry "Unfair!" if you change it around. Or, imagine the horror of running into two of the foul beasts. Now *that's* scary. 6. Not a unique creature. |
| bobothechimp08-15-07, 07:40 PM | 7. Give it a breath weapon. 8. Give it ranks in jump. Flying won't save you now. 9. Rearrange it's feats. Toughness 10 times is not that impressive. 10. Give it levels in Hulking Hurler. Flying will definitely not save you now. |
| tiercel08-15-07, 07:49 PM | 11. Give it the Change Shape (Su) ability. (Or Alternate Form, if you really prefer.) While it may not be intelligent (Int 3) it certainly has plenty of animal cunning (Wis 14).... May explain Monty Python's vorpal bunny. |
| JasonOrlandoHawk08-15-07, 10:32 PM | 12. Epic Level Mount... 13. Severely weaken it to about a CR 10 (Disease, Ability Drain, etc...), then insert it as the boss fight for a group of level 7-8 adventurers. (Find a way to negate the whole "kill it with the wish spell" hurdle.) |
| Karish08-16-07, 12:48 AM | 14. Give it the multiheaded template, give it 30 heads. Give 6 Fire Breath as a Red Dragon, give 6 Cold Breath as a Silver Dragon, give 6 Electricity Breath as a Blue Dragon, give 6 Acid Breath as a Black Dragon, and give 6 some kind of Sonic Roar equivalent to these sorts of things. Add the winged template, add the Creature of Legend template, and then make it a monstrous vampire. Not exactly simple, but you'll be making people sad. |
| ZeroSpace900008-16-07, 12:56 AM | 15 Make it spawn duplicates, like an ooze. That'll tick people off. 16 Have it fire numerous Hadokens, then have it cancel one into a Hado-Ryuken. |
| Dazzer08-16-07, 01:04 AM | Have a 20th level druid, optimized to handle-animal and wild-empathy around (NPC of course!). That way; you have the druid train the tarrasque to have tricks, and obey commands and orders. Then have the druid give the tarrasque one half his gear, in combat related items the tarrasque can benefit from. Then, when the PC's fight the tarrasque, one of the items (this might seem silly...) Is a QUAAL's Feather token (tree). Have the tarrasque use it (3 int, first trick, when threatened use tree!). Then have the druid tree-stride to the battle-area about 3 rounds later... The PC's won't really care about the tree, just say "It's a plain oak tree, nothing really special, it must have got the thing off some dude and accidently activated it..." The druid spends 3 rounds making himself invincible. Then have him come through, and cast heal on the tarrasque several times. (have the druid optimized to murder spell-resistance). Then have the druid buff the tarrasque to the point of the ridiculous. Also, the druid is smart, and has either a druidic version of, an anyone-can use item of, or ranks in UMD. He dimensional anchors the party. Now they cannot escape. He also murders their base run-away speeds. ECL 22 encounter. |
| Andorxor08-16-07, 01:24 AM | Make it one size category smaller.Than give it powerfull build and fur. |
| calronmoonflower08-16-07, 03:00 AM | Make it a tiny creature with the same ability scores, give it the winged template, and call it the devil bat. |
| Andorxor08-16-07, 05:59 AM | - Give him gaseous form and hide him in a misty swamp. - Give him Ethereal Jaunt. - Give him a burrow speed |
| runestar08-16-07, 06:06 AM | Slap on the phrenic template. You get all sorts of goodies like fission and offensive SLAs at a sick manifestor lv of 48. |
| Sajek08-16-07, 10:12 AM | Simple: Make it Fine sized. That's it. None of its abilities or stats change. If anything, it becomes more dangerous thanks to an increased AC and attack bonus. That should screw with their heads. |
| snakeman83008-16-07, 10:33 AM | Okay, this should be: #25. Somebody cloned it (a demon lord, perhaps?) The PC's kill it, then they face it later. With class levels. Those flying wizards won't think it's funny when the Big T throws a Prismatic Spray at them. 26. Give it full ranks in Perform (Dance). The PC's find it terorizing a village, but not by eating everything in sight. Instead, it's trying to change it's treasure entry by dancing. (given that maximum ranks would give it a nice +29 modifier, as it's not a class skill, it's going to be a great dancer. Enough to eventually gain notice from extraplaner beings). The extra skill points can come from boosting it's Int to 10. This won't increase the CR one bit (okay, maybye the Int boost will), but it will definitly confuse the players. |
| Senevri08-16-07, 11:20 AM | My tarrasque comes with the Winged template. From the Dungeonomicon, "Dungeonbred" is an inherited(!!??) template that can be applied to a magical beast that is large or bigger. - No increase in LA, STR +4, CON +4 (to counteract the size decreases) - One size category smaller, downto medium. - Improved natural attack & endurance as a bonus feat. and some other stuff, buy the book and wotnot. So... stack this template on 'til you get a medium tarrasque. Medium _winged_ tarrasque, preferrably. |
| Orchomenos08-17-07, 12:00 PM | Simple: Make it Fine sized. That's it. None of its abilities or stats change. If anything, it becomes more dangerous thanks to an increased AC and attack bonus. That should screw with their heads. http://www.gotfuturama.com/img/Encyc/156.gif #27 Give it ranks of Ninja & Pirate. It'll end the debates on what's better: a ninja or a pirate AND what's better than a ninja/pirate! |
| Lykor08-17-07, 12:29 PM | #28 Give it a 40' base move speed. |
| MrCustomer08-17-07, 12:43 PM | A doomsday cult worships the Tarrasque and have awakened it to destroy the world. When the Tarrasque is threatened by the players, the Cult will go to any length to ensure it survive. The players have to fight the tarrasque and the cult that ambushes them to save it. Many tactics to fight the tarrasque will be hampered by the cult's defense. This will be even more confusing if the players, even if they heard of the doomsday cult that worships the tarrasqu, aren't expecting it to be defended by the cultists. |
| Aberlonian08-17-07, 01:01 PM | #29 prehensile sticky tongue, like a giant frog, to catch flying adventurers. |
| Eater_Of_Souls08-17-07, 01:28 PM | #30 Make it dual wield 2 summoned pit fiends as +5 echantment weapons  This was an old question but I can't remember where and result was that 2 pit fiends would indeed equal +5 weapons :p |
| quakemist08-17-07, 04:47 PM | 31. When you "wish it dead", it becomes Undead. |
| Sajek08-17-07, 05:20 PM | http://www.gotfuturama.com/img/Encyc/156.gif  |
| TyWebb08-18-07, 12:07 AM | 32. The next time the party visits a town, have it tending bar at the first tavern they visit. Have it introduce itself as Steve Tarrasque. Make its physical attacks level-draining. |
| quakemist08-18-07, 04:26 AM | 32. The next time the party visits a town, have it tending bar at the first tavern they visit. Have it introduce itself as Steve Tarrasque. Make its physical attacks level-draining. for kicks, I had my Tarrasque talk to them, and they sensed motive against if it was "Truly the Tarrasque" and when one of them got a nat 20, I said: "...his name is Richard." |
| DrStalker08-18-07, 09:00 AM | 33) Replace Tougness (6) with Toughness (5) and Leadersip (cohort that can cast Fly on it) 34) An anti-flight field. I do like 1) Int 10 a lot though. |
| OneWinged4ngel08-18-07, 03:59 PM | 31. When you "wish it dead", it becomes Undead. Wow, that's exactly what I did, in a nutshell ^^;; It also had a burrow speed and very high Jump, less lame feats, and a higher movement speed. |
| Gnome_Dragon_Disciple08-18-07, 04:23 PM | 35. He's actually the living avatar of Pelor. Slaying him sends Pelor into remission, allowing the evil armies of the Abyss to run amok in the prime material plane. The party must then quest to resurrect the Tarrasque to halt the advances of the coming darkness. 36. The Tarrasque has been donating its loot to an orphanage run by a retired (formerly) epic-level VOP cleric that shall now surely go under without the income provided by the monster. |
| Need_A_Life08-18-07, 05:38 PM | 37) Vow of Poverty Tarrasque 38) Give it Soul Eater levels. 39) Give it Thayan Gladitator levels. 40) If nothing else, change Toughness (6) to Improved Toughness (6) for a net gain of 270hp! |
| bobothechimp08-18-07, 08:16 PM | Improved Toughness can only be taken once. |
| Anathema08-18-07, 09:52 PM | 41) Make him the star of a buddy movie. "The Tarrasque and the halfling bard". Then it's a comedy of errors as these two lovable characters try to work out their differences while being chained at the hip. 42) Change his known name from Tarrasque to something innocuous like Fred. This way your players will never know what hit them as the entire village they're in flees screaming from Fred. 43) Make it so some evil wizard swapped the mind of the Tarrasque with some simpleton. Then you have some looney guy who eats everything in sight like the Tazmanian Devil, and some dopey Tarrasque who isn't doing much to terrorize anybody. 44) This Tarrasque only walks backwards. Nobody knows why. 45) He's just trying to deliver a birthday cake! (an evil birthday cake, with evil party hats) 46) He's not really hungry, it's just that eating is the only way he knows how to communicate. 47) He wears cool shades  48) His fangs drip with the screams of his victims, his eyes burn your soul as you stare in to their dark recesses, and his breath smells like flowers. 49) The Tarrasque is actually a mad genius who is stranded on earth. He speaks with a russian accent. He has a cyclopian assistant with three legs who likes crossdressing. A little girl and the awakened koala bear she's friends with will tag along sometimes as he eats the countryside in order to take material back to his lair (it's hard with his little bitty arms) and try and form a spelljamming ship that will take him back to his home planet. |
| Errol08-18-07, 10:04 PM | -Make it afraid of mice. -Change it to an aquatic creature that attacks coastal towns and make the PCs fight it underwater. Make sure it has a swim speed! :D |
| Enlightened108-19-07, 12:09 AM | 52. Noncorporeal |
| TyWebb08-19-07, 01:56 AM | Here's another one: 53) The party finally manages to down the fell creature after expending nearly all of their resources, and stand gasping and panting, almost out of hit points, when.....the tarrasque's parents show up, and wonder what's become of their child... |
| NASCAR_1080i08-19-07, 03:19 AM | give it an anti magic torc or a ring of fast healing ... |
| Hack and Smasher08-19-07, 07:16 AM | Change its Toughness (6) to Combat Brute, Shock Trooper, rolabar's Gambit, improved bullrush, weapon focus bite, improved crit bite. Have its carapace spilt down the middle and open up into a set of wings like a beetle. I second a burrow speed. |
| Tenadros08-20-07, 06:45 PM | Vow of Poverty (with respective int. increase.) Along the smae lines. Class levels. |
| Pallin Rahl08-20-07, 07:51 PM | I have no clue what number we're on... as people stopped numbering and then added new ideas with repeating of past ones... so I'll let those who post after me figure it out... :P (we're somewhere in the 50s) xx) The Tarrasque is immune to magic and damage from enchanted weapons. The only thing that can hurt him: normal, non-enchanted weapons (and don't let the PCs know unless they heavily research) :) yy) He's Bizarro-Tarrasque... he never has to eat. The only way to kill him, drop him to zero (or below) hp and feed him. :P (again, the PCs can only find this out through extensive research... something many PCs wouldn't bother with, sadly) |
| Lionhearted08-21-07, 09:31 AM | Things to make them cry: *Exploit the Tarrasque's HD to give him epic feats, like devastating critical *Give him large and in charge Things to make them go wtf: * The tarrasque randomly appears throughout the landscape, digging up from below only popping up his head, then arm the PC's with a Collosal Warhammer. Whack the tarrasque anyone? |
| TheDragonmaster08-21-07, 12:13 PM | Give it the Monstrous Beast (Cold Breath Weapon) template and the feat Final Strike (both from SS)... when they finally cast that carefully worded Wish spell... ...they all take 30d6 damage!!! |
| Fsi-Dib08-21-07, 04:42 PM | 65. (I counted the amount of posts. Bad people, ALWAYS put the number ... *mumble* incompetent people ... *grr*) Incorporeal Tarrasque Mob. Beat that. |
| RazorSharp08-21-07, 06:27 PM | # 66 (I think) Give him ranks in Profession (Prostitution), and add a few diseases that the PC's can contract by fighting him (contracted from contact with blood). Imagine an epic level Paladin explaining why he has some super intense rare form of herpes! |
| Amon_WinterfallIV08-21-07, 07:20 PM | Give it Int 20 and One Divine Rank. There we go! |
| Talisman08-21-07, 09:49 PM | #68: Half-illithid, half-farspawn, pseudonatural tarrasque. #69: The Tarrasque is actually the bastard child of the primal forces of Good and Evil, born before they evolved into true opposites. To represent this fact, give it the Half-Celestial and Half-Fiend templates, 10 levels in Paladin, and 10 levels in Blackguard. #70: Give it rogue levels. Tarrasque sneak attack! #71: Assume a super-intelligent dragon decodes the tarrasque's language (or crafts a magic item that allows communication) and manages to communicate witg Big T. It turns out the Tarrasque is merely lonely. He settles down with the (felmale) dragon...and a few decades later, hordes of juvenile half-dragon tarrasquelings terrorize the land. Anyone who has a problem with them has a problem with Mom and Dad as well. #72: Make it 300' tall and aquatic. Have it lumber out of the sea in Kara-Tur and smash a few cities. Every time it seems to be killed, bring it back with little or no explanation. Gradually transform it from a villain into a hero by introducing new, bizarre, and equally enormous creatures for it to fight. #73: Revel the reason for the tarrasque's endless rampage: it's looking for its car keys. The PCs have to find a Colossal-sized set of adamantine car keys (stolen by Garl Glittergold) and return them to avert catastrophe. |
| Andorxor08-22-07, 01:14 AM | # 66 (I think) Give him ranks in Profession (Prostitution), and add a few diseases that the PC's can contract by fighting him (contracted from contact with blood). Imagine an epic level Paladin explaining why he has some super intense rare form of herpes! A Paladin could remove the herpes himself and don't need to give a explaination. |
| Enlightened108-22-07, 01:24 AM | 74. Give it the Leadership feat and have it claim the PCs as followers. |
| tridiak08-22-07, 04:18 AM | The adventurers have been hired to "remove" a family from there land. Everyone they send never comes back. The family of 3 and one dog (Fido) are low level wimps. Whenever the family is under threat, Fido charges up and tries to eat someone's shoe. Once hurt, he polymorphs into Mr T and proceeds to continue to eat said foot. He barks and wags his tail. He still thinks he's a dog. |
| White_Whale08-22-07, 07:54 AM | The adventurers have been hired to "remove" a family from there land. Everyone they send never comes back. The family of 3 and one dog (Fido) are low level wimps. | RazorSharp08-22-07, 05:40 PM | I know a Paladin can remove disease, hence the "super intense rare form". The guy who plays the Paladin in my group is hilarious, and this is an idea I've had for something to throw at his character. I like to have something insane/memorable happen to one character each adventure when I can... |
| jeremykincaid08-22-07, 05:47 PM | I like using the 2ed version. Definately more frightening. I like it more. The downgrade of Big T was disheartening when I converted to 3.5 |
| Enlightened108-22-07, 10:55 PM | 76(?) Increase its size by a couple orders of magnitude. "That's no moon, that's the Terrasque!" |
