Hey, um, maybe you'd care to provide just a touch more detail there... I mean, the suspects you've provided as examples could just be arrived at from a random NPC generator - there's nothing about being a dwarven metalworker that immediately makes you a suspect everytime a sword and shield get stolen.

How about telling us things like who the stuff belongs to, why it's worth stealing and where the crime will take place? That way people can provide you with some actual suspects who have motives and alibis and are incriminated by evidence and so forth. Otherwise, it seems that all you want is:

4. Ted (commoner 1) - a local turnip salesman

ok we got ted, the man who needs to slice his turnip five at time
we got tom the addict and tak the butlerbut im sorry hes alsleep so hes kind out of the picture

but tom isnt, he probalby pawned off the weapon and sheild to buy more turnips. and ted could have poisened the turnips stolen the items and used them to buy out theric the other turnip teller

5.theric the other turnip teller-commoner 1
(the butler didnt count)
but now lets move on because turnips arent very interesting

ok the longs sword is a +2 weapon owned by a noble, an elf, who was a part of the court in the human lands. not much more can be said for i still need player feed back. the crime took place during the local meeting of nobles where the sword misteriously disappeard teh gaurds roaming the halls fell asleep due to potions put in there food. there was a window left openon the second floor that could have been a posible place of escape. almost all staff members where asleep, the only ones awake was a stable hand (one that had a limp), 2 outside gaurds named karge and heinfast, karge lacks the brainpower to steal the sword, and hasnt even seen it, so has heinfast except he isnt a dimwit and his alabie is karge. there is also a maid but she has never worked with the noble or been to his chambers, she washes dishes. and the cook eats the same meals he makes so he was out cold, oh and hes kind a drunk also so yeah.

No, I am not happy. There's just so much going on in my life right now. This isn't the time nor place to ramble about my unhappiness, though. Thank you for asking.

Now on topic:

I assume there is a particular noble hosting said event. Of course, if the court was convened at the time, that rules him/her out, but what about their no good black sheep of a son?

6 - Arlinthas: Aristocrat 5/ Rogue 3 - Arlinthas will have an alibi that is reasonable, yet a bit shaky. Such as being with his lover, some petty noble in a lesser area of town. The problem with said alibi is that Arlinthas is widely known to be involved with several women, none of which is...

7 - Theia: Aristocrat 3/ Adept 1 - Theia is known to dabble in magic, some say magic of a darker sort, but the truth is that she's fascinated by magic, and hopes one day to attend the collegium to study wizardry, but her family's fortunes were gambled away by her father, leaving her house poor by noble standards. Even half market price of a +2 sword would put her family back on top.

Hope that helps.

Torch, I'm sorry you're not happy :(

Alright, to be a suspect, you need to have both the motive and means to commit the crime. Maybe later you'll add some more detail to broaden the possible motives for the theft (e.g. the elven lord's political opponents have stolen the sword because it's an important heirloom and he'll be stripped of his rank if he loses it), but for the moment the only motive is that the sword's very valuable. That being so, virtually everyone who would like a bit of extra cash has an interest in acquiring the sword, so the important thing in identifying suspects becomes finding out who had the means of commiting the theft. Again, that means that virtually every competent burglar in the city is a suspect.

So, you've got a list of suspects as long as your arm, and that's a bit difficult for your players to deal with. Under those circumstances, you probably want to cut that down a bit, which you can do by:

1) Providing certain individuals with a special motive for stealing the sword

Count Raveline DeMouton (male human aristocrat 4/expert 4) - Count Raveline is a distant relation of the king and is now in his late fifties. He is something of a reclusive scholar, has a waspish and irritable disposition and has shown himself in the past to be vengeful when crossed. The count collects exotic weaponry, and some months ago tried to buy the elven sword from its owner (hereafter known as Lord Jaquora, for want of a better name), only to be rebuffed. While probably not capable of stealing the sword himself, he could easily have hired someone to do it for him.

Lady Isidria Tallahomatha (female elven bard 6/aristocrat 2) - Lady Tallahomatha is the daughter of Lord Jaquora's bastard half-brother. Since her father's death some months ago, she's come to court under a pseudonym and has ingratiated herself with some of the lesser nobles and the King's minstrels, but has otherwise kept a low profile. She has been ostracised by the elven aristocracy since birth and harbours a deep resentment against Lord Jaquora and all that he stands for, so she'd probably love to steal his sword. It's doubtful that she intends to hang around court much longer, especially now that she's seen her uncle humiliated.

2) Examining the way in which the theft was commited

The theft was performed by someone capable of sending all the guards to sleep (let's ignore for the moment the fact that it was done withpotions rather than spells), so that would tend to implicate a magic user of some sort. Thus:

Huon Greenbird (male human wizard 6/rogue 2) - Huon is an up-and-coming member of the local thieves guild who has built up something of a reputation for pulling off quite daring thefts through the use of magic. Any reasonably well-connected thief would think of Huon if they were asked about the identity of a thief with magical inclinations; they might even recall a story of him putting the guard dogs to sleep before stealing Lady Henrika's emerald necklace. Coincidentally, he was seen hanging around the area near the palace in the week before the theft.

However, it turns out that the guards weren't put to sleep with a spell, they were drugged with potions, which means that whoever did the crime must have had help from someone who knew what food the guards were going to eat, such as:

Jill Aglae (female human commoner 1) - Jill is a servant who works in the palace kitchen and took the food to the guards' barracks on the night of the theft. She wouldn't have been able to pull off the theft herself, but whoever did might have paid her to slip something into the stew - goodness knows that she could use the money, what with her father sick and all.

Berek Stonehammer (male dwarf fighter 4/expert 4) - Berek is a local smith who makes a lot of the weapons for the palace guards. He's a familiar sight around the barracks and drops by from time to time to shoot the breeze with his friends in the guards. On the night of the theft he stopped in to have a drink in the barracks before going up to the North tower to have a word with the captain about some new crossbows. As a matter of fact, he might have brought a wineskin to share around before heading off.

Boris the lazy blacksmith.

He is a retired rogue (lvl 6) who pretends to be a blacksmith in a large city.

At night he sneaks around stealing weapons, armor, and other items from the far side of town, and then sells them in his shop as items of his own creation.

He has maxxed out his Bluff Skill.
