A TPK isn't hard to do, all you need is to make a monster that your PCs, thinking they're invincible, will attack and get slaughtered. But can you get your PCs to hurt/kill themselves? The more subtle the better!

1. Set up a room with the instructions on how to leave guarded by multiple castings of explosive runes. Make a trap that will dispel said runes, and wait for the rogue to come in and disarm the trap, thus making PCs have to deal with the inane number of runes you made. Make sure that the writing won't get destroyed in the process, though.

2. Illusions.

I like traps that fool the PCs into them, or into even worse traps. Pit traps are excellent for this purpose.. you can:

1) Make a pit trap that is very damn obivous to spot... maybe even just leave it as an open pit. Make sure that it is so long that the PCs will have to make a running jump over it. Make sure that your BBEG has cast a wall of force in the air just before the other end, so that the jumping PCs jump right into it, and falls down in the pit.

2) Make another and better hidden pit trap right behind the first one. If a character overjumps, he/she will simply jump right into the second pit trap.

3) Make an antimagic field above the pit trap, so that characters that attempt to fly, jump or levitate over it will fall right in.

4) Any combination of the above.

leave a large red button in the middle of a support in the center of a 40ft by 40ft room. when it is pressed the support cosnaps and the roof comes down. they will press it, they can't resist.

lable the alchemist fire as cure potion

make the entire floor of a large room a wall of force with an illution makeing it appear to be a floor. leave a large sign in the room that reads "don't look down" if anyone looks down the wall of force is dispelled.

I'm stealing this from a friend of mine who set this trap for another party.

Door leads into a room with no floor, there is both darkness and silence on the room. The first person steps into the room and nothing seems to happen because they can not hear anything bad happening while the first person falls into a 100' pit trap through three or four blade barriers into a two foot deep pool of acid.

Second person steps through carefully to see if player #1 is ok.

I plan to use this trick later on.

As the PCs turn a corner, they arrive just in time to see a bunch of goblins push a (closed) chest down a chute. The PCs will most likely kill the goblins and slide down the chute... only to find it leads to a furnace.

Not to be a wet blanket, but why do I want to do this?

welcome to evil DM humor. Like the Tomb of Horrors.

speakign of which

fun with spheres of annihalation! put illusionso ver the m to majke it seem like... oh, say, a benign teleporter

Pit traps... filled with Green Slime (instant death with no save if oyu fall in or soemthgin equally nasty)... illusioned over to look like the stairs down.

a giant pit of magma (say 200' wide) covered by walls of force that the PCs need to cross. of course, they;ll shortly figure otu its overed and walk across... until they hit the trap , somewhere i nthe midle, that dispels all the walls.

A scroll with the name of an archfeind wirtten on it over and over. (Hastur?)

An old man offers to deal them all a game of poker... with a deck of many things.

A deck of many things (Its called a campaign killer for a reason)

K, this is evil at its best

To start, create a fabled dungeon which holds a nice treasure

THen have the PCs find a journal to find out how to escape a labrinth

In the journal it states that there is an illusionary wall in the labrinth and that it is just a matter of finding it with detect magic

PCs find the wall and learn it contains a powerful (8th level spell) aura

Pcs go through illusionary wall and walk into a prismatic wall

Last thing they see is the corpse of the journals owner

Its evil because it makes them feal stupid

Throwing in more subtle clues about the prismatic wall always gelps

The enemy spikes shut the door and pours oil through murder holes, followed by lit torches. Then when the door gets bull rushed through by the tank, he falls into the pit dug right outside. Not that I have any experience with this....
