Mellagon 10-06-06, 09:58 PM	One shots are notoriously difficult to control with my usual group. It can be seen as a chance to do silly things that you would not be allowed to do in a normal campaign. The kender that dumped his bag of platinum inside a poverty-stricken village, ruining any hope I had of using that village as I had intended in my one shot, springs to mind. Make things very modular. Design a few appropriate encounters and tactics, make a few interesting traps, have a few things that are beyond the PCs control to thwart. Then put them in the proper order as the PCs muck everything up. Example: GM: "You get a letter saying there's an evil wizard despoiling the lands around his castle. He needs thwarting." PCs: "Nah. I didn't take my ritalin this morning. I'm going to attack the king." GM: "Uh... okay..." At that point, reach for the Evil Wizard you statted up, cross out the alignment 'chaotic evil,' change it to 'lawful good.' Then sick the newly heroic wizard on your party of villains. Modular spontaneity. It'll be your friend when they start thwarting you.
