so one of my players is playing as a half elf and he wants to take the Dragon Disciple PrC, and I have no idea what would happen when he finishes up the PrC. Would he become 1/4 elf, 1/4 human, 1/2 dragon or what?

he is a half elf with draconic blood, his devotion hones his powers.

He is still ~1/2 elf ~1/2 human a lil bit o dragon

but when he finishes the PrC gaining the 1/2 dragon template, i don't know if he will be 1/4 elf 1/4 human 1/2 dragon or something else

Whats in a name?

He will have all the stats of a half-elf, and all the traits that come with the PrC (template).

this is d&d, if the laws of physics need not apply, why do the laws of mathmatics need apply?

trust me, you think that is bad, try stacking every half-dragon template together... on a kobold. now try figuring out it's lineage... (legally, by the books, this is possible).

Here's how I like to think of it...

Half-elf is a race unto itself that breeds true (i.e. when two Half-Elves have a child, it is a Half-Elf as well, with the same racial characteristics, etc) ...though yes, they can also still derive from elf + human coupling. That is to say, they are not one-part human, one-part elf... instead they are a new race unto themselves.

i.e. Half-elf is a single race, as is Halfling, Human, Elf, Gnome... etc... (it's not some kind of template).

So your PrC turns you into a Half-Dragon. You are now simply half-"Half-Elf" & half-Dragon. ...just as you'd be half-Halfling / half-Dragon (as when a Halfling becomes a Half-Dragon) ...or half-Elf & half-Dragon (as when an Elf becomes a Half-Dragon)... etc.

Another way to state this...
You add templates to base races. In this case, Half-Elf is your base race.
When you hit that point in your PrC, you are now a Half-Dragon with Half-Elf as the base race. Simple as that.

The base race's name can just sound a bit awkward when discussing this... thus maybe leading to some confusion. Instead of Half-Elves, let's call them Elfblooded for the moment. An Elfblooded guy and an Elfblooded girl have a baby. This baby grows up and picks up that PrC... eventually becoming a Half-Dragon. He is now a Half-Dragon with Elfblooded as his base race. He is essentially: half-Elfblooded / half-Dragon. That's what is happening here... only instead of "Elfblooded", we call the unique race "Half-Elf". Same thing. :)

In short: Is descendant of Dragons, humans and elves.

It is fantasy game, so it is no more incredible than being descendant of a Dragon and a dwarf, a celestial and a gnome and so on.

If you are asking for mechanical purposes state them in the question. Otherwise what does it matter if the character is 3/16 Human, 5/16 Elf, and 8/16 Dragon?

As far as the stacking half-dragon templates.... This is where it is up to the DM to decide how much he is willing to tolerate past common sense.
