The easiest way is to roll a d6.

1 or 2 = 1
3 or 4 = 2
5 or 6 = 3

You can buy a d3. There's two styles.

The first style is a d6 with the numbers 1, 2, and 3 each appearing twice.

The second is a three-sided prism with rounded edges.

Why is thee no d5 anywhere in the game?

Why is thee no d5 anywhere in the game?

Because a d5 represents 20% chance of each number appearing. It's really easy to do this other ways (i.e. use a d%, use a d20 split up by 4s, etc.). The d3 is needed because there's no other way to get a 33.33% chance.

Dunno, but if you need a d5, you can get one here (http://paizo.com/store/gameAids/dice/byManufacturer/chessex/d5).

Popular ways include...

Roll 1d6:
1 & 4 = 1
2 & 5 = 2
3 & 6 = 3

Or

Roll 1d6:
1 & 2 = 1
3 & 4 = 2
5 & 6 = 3

Or

Roll 1d4:
1 = 1
2 = 2
3 = 3
4 = ignore & reroll

I had a player who did:

1 & 4 = 1
2 & 5 = 2
3 & 6 = 3

She was consistent, so I didn't much care.

1d3 = 1d6/2
1d5 = 1d10/2
1d100 = 1d10x2

etc

You could try this: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20040517a)

In the first box change the "1" into a "3". (or any other number you'd like.)

There's always the less popular roll d20 mothod:
1 = 1
2 = 2
3 = 3
4 - 20 = reroll. :P

1d3 = 1d6/2

I roll a 1... resulting in... 1/2? :P

3 & 6 = 3
I do it like that. That's the most logical way, IMO. When you roll a 1, it's 1. 2 is 2, and 3 is 3.

I had a DM back in the day who loved to roll all sorts of crazy numbers. For example:

1d36

Roll a d12 and a d6. If the d6 was a 1 or 2 then the number on the d12 was the end result. 3 or 4 meant you needed to add 12 to whatever the d12 showed and 5 or 6 meant add 24. He loved to keep things random and make things difficult.

"Cluny?" That wouldn't be "Cluny the Scourge," would it? Can it be true that I'm not the only Brian Jacques fan in the world?

Sorry, off topic, I know. I'll spank myself later....

There's also blank dice you can buy and just write it on there if you're too lazy to use a d6.

I actually own d3's but tend to just use a d6 instead. Faster. :D
