I'm going to be starting a new campaing soon and 2 of the 4 players are thinking of having drow. I don't mind have drow characters but since we were staring at first level I realize that they would be overpowered until the other characters reached 3rd level. I thought I saw something before where drow and other races with level adjustments were adjusted to be on par with other races at low levels and slowly gained their abilities as time went on but now I can't find that book. So, I was just wondering how anyone else out there would handle this situation. I know I can always just tell them no or start everyone at 3rd level but wanted to see if I had any other options. Thanks in advance.

Savage progressions, start with a half-drow (Replace Low-Light Vision with Darkvision)

let them start as a elf more or less.

then the next two levels after that they get drow abilites.

Or rather than stunting the drow's progression at low levels, just make use of the level adjustment and allow the other characters to start off at lvl 3.

Or use the rules where drow need 6000 to gain a level.

The other players will level 3 times to thier 1.

It'll be ok.

Depends. If you think that allowing players to play Drow, are they reformed Drow, or just flat out evil? The players should have to explain to you how their characters came to be with the group, the same way as if they wanted to play aquatic elves.

My favorite mechanic for this has always been a twisted upbringing, saying that those players have no access to any of the Drow abilities and are essentially Elves with black skin and white hair. they have no idea of their heritage or innate powers until they are trained. But still every NPC reviles them for their drow nature.

But otherwise, yeah, they have a minus 1 level adjustment for a male, and 2 levels for a female. it's all in the DMG. at first level they are essentially an elf, then they must spend class levels when they level up to gain racial abilities. You can either force them to do this for each of the first few levels, or allow them to take actual class levels at their discrestion.

Good Luck.

Lesser drow in The Players Guide to Faerun are watered down to eliminate the LA.
The same book has options for playing powerful races at 1st level.
Let them be 1/2 drow, which has no LA.
