Question #1 - The PC's managed to save their town from getting destroyed and captured 6 Heavy Catapults and 3 Large Seige Towers. The Province is being invaded by Hobgoblins and the only real army in the province has arrived in whats left of the town. Should the PC's be allowed to sell the seige equipment and make a small fortune(around 36,000gp)

Question #2 - Later in the Campaign I have the Lv14 Paladin commanding the above said only real army in the province get killed. Should I allow the groups Paladin to replace him.

1. Allowed to? SURE. However, due to the fact that there is a war going on, all owners of seige equipment are expected, if not required, to hand over said equipment without question. You should be glad you weren't conscripted.

2. I would say he has a good shot if he has spent time in service of the king/lord/good guys and has the trust and respect of the army. There is also that whole military hierarchy thing, though.

</sarcasm>

Seriously, I see no reason why they couldn't sell the loot/command the army/whatever. It's your game. But why would a good group (you did say paladin) charge full price for the stuff that would help the army they help?

EDIT: Also, it doesn't seem likely that the army would carry that much gold on them.

1)Sure they can sell the seige stuff....assuming there is someone there who A)wants to buy it and B) has the money to buy it. Guess the army might want it, but do they have 40,000 some gold with them? And do they realy need/want them? A seige tower is not much use if your defending a city, for example. The army might want the catapults, but does anyone know how to use them? Does the army have a guy with a good BaB and high Int who would be willing to sit back and be crew cheif?

2)Sure.

The sale of the "siege" equipment does not have to be in actual gold pieces, but could be in a signed "letter of credit".

Agreed. A promisary note from the commanding officer of the armed forces, to be redeemed at the Royal Treasury back at the capitol, seems appropriate enough as a reward. Although to be fair, I don't think the party is entitled to sell it unless they really were the ONLY people defending the town... did no one else even so much as lift a pitchfork in the defense of their home? If the answer is, "Well that's silly, of course they helped defend their home," then the PCs really aren't entitled to the siege equipment at all. In fact, laying claim to it may end up labeling them as looters - military scavengers, and that's treasonous in most places, I'm sure.

Now, as for ascending to lead the military force, replacing the previous Paladin... how did HE get the job? Did he work his way up like everyone else? Through exemplary conduct and service to the Crown, did he end up with the position? Maybe that's how this guy should intend to go about things. Of course, some doofus could be promoted to the position who doesn't have the backing of the military body... and they may clamor for the aforementioned Paladin to take his place.

You could even make an adventure hook out of his need to compete for the rank with this loser.

#1: sure, but as other's have mentioned, not too many armies carry tons of gold with them and are there any artillerists with the army that know how to use them. Also, if the weapons are needed for the town's defense, the party paladin should be willing to hand them over, or at least loan them out, for the good of the people.

#2: not too many armies are going to just let some paladin walk in and take over. Is there something we're not hearing? Do paladins make up the officer core of this province's military? Is there some other reason that they'd think he'd do a good job as leader (leadership feat?) Otherwise, I'd say he could try, but chances are slim.

#1, No. This army doesn't need to ask, they should take the equipment and throw a promissary note of a few hundred gold at the PCs if they try and protest. This is the army we're talking about here, and the enemy is on the way.

#2 No. Unless EVERYONE in the army that would be qualified is dead or permanently indisposed, the Paladin shouldn't be given command.

Now that I think about it, who is going to buy those catapults anyway? I mean, just because you'd like to sell them doesn't mean that anyone wants them. Something tells me that few people in the town are really interested in "slightly used, goblin manufactured, seige equipment."

Here's what you do: the party tries to sell the stuff, but can't find a buyer anywhere. Finally, the army shows up and offers to take the catapults and seige equipment off the party's hands for a fraction of the selling price.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everybody who says thet the army either seizes or pays almost nothing for the equipment.

Also, I agree that armies tend to promote from the inside. A new guy isn't going to be made general. On the other hand, I like MinusInnocence's idea of a screw up posted to replace the dead paladin. Now the group has to deal with a screw-up who is hated by his own army but desperately wants to prove himself so keeps sending people off to their deaths. After a while, something akin to mutiny might rear its ugly head and the PCs might be looked to as the only reasonable choice by the soldiers.

another point.

even by selling the siege equip. the party gains little immediate benefit.

During a war prices raise through the roof, that is if you can find somthing you want to buy. because of this the 40,000 gold could probabally be reduced to about 10,000 worth of equip/merchandise. :smirk:

I've decided that Yoav the army commander gives the town mayor a Commissary note for 8,000gp that can be cashed after the war - war ruins the economy + the equipment is used + there is a recession. The mayor will give the PC's a gift of 200gp after the war ends as the rest of money is used to cover the cost of rebuilding the town. Instead of a cash reward Yoav hires 5 of the PC's as a strike team or possibly as jr. officers. The advice was very much appreciated - the pc's won't appreciate losing out on making a fortune though.
