Guess what...I have too quick questions for you. My group and I are starting our first real adventure later on today (The Sunless Citadel). I am just wondering what rooms should I draw on our board. Everything, the rooms with monsters or rooms and not corridors? Also, is there anywhere on the net where I can get a list of thigs that can be bought in a small town and then print off. Handing the book around to everyone could get tiring.

Thanks

Ok, as for what to buy in a small town, just tell them "pretty much anything within reason". Rope? Oil? Caltrops? Food? Horses? Check, check, check, check, and check, but they won't be able to afford horses at 1st level, and they're irrelevant for this adventure anyway.

The rule of thumb for supplies is as long as it's something you could buy at your local Wal-Mart fantasy equivalent, let it go. Once they start asking for bizarre stuff (body parts from exotic animals, gunpowder, really special metals, and magic), they have to start going on quests for said bizarre items. Make them earn that crap. No need for a list man.

Now, onto your other question. If I were you, I'd just give them some graph paper and tell them how big the rooms are, where the doors/windows/major objects in the room are, and let them make their own damn map. That's how we always did it back in the day. (And I'm only 19 man....hehe)

When combat becomes an issue, haul out that board you mentioned and draw up the individual room. Lets you focus on your combat on a larger scale, and you won't be giving away the layout to your PC's. Unless of course, you want to say that "they got a hold of some accurate floorplans for the citadel", or something along those lines.

Good luck.

P.S.-Watch out for that White Dragon...first time I ran it the party died.

Yup I agree with Draco Strang. No need to make a list and let your players draw their own map of the building. Just draw the layout of a room if there is a battle.

We always do it this way. It gives the party the feeling they have to figure it out for themselves just like if they were in a dungeon in RL.

As far as what can be found in towns, if I remember correctly the town's gp limit applies. So if the town's gp limit is 90, you more than likely won't find any item that costs more than 90gp by itself. So pretty much everything on the basic equipment list with the exception of the spyglass.

Had a player try to slip that one by me once.
PC: well he's done, what do you think?
Me: you can have everything except for the spyglass...
PC: oh, I was hoping you wouldn't notice that....
Me: You forgot that all DM's automatically succeed in sense motive checks agains players bluff's.
