Just thought this would be an amusing thing to do, it is the one 1001 thread we don't have yet.

I will start

1) This was two years ago in a drow arena. group of 4 level 10 PCs. They fought against 4 CR 5 jovocs. The jovocs devastated them all with aura of retribution. I had one of jovocs with 1 level in cleric, and equipped with a wand of cure serious wounds. This added up to a CR 10 encounter, but the main way the PCs wanted to damage was with fireball, flame strike, and arrows. TPK, but I was feeling merciful so I had them just knocked out

2) This was tonight. I was DMing for a party, and it was 8 level 3 PCs, which was enough for an EL 5 adventure. First encounter: CR 4 hydra skeleton from libris mortis. Before it went down it killed off a wizard, a fighter, and a druid. Poor fighter only had AC 16. They ended up next in an insanely complicated battle with a plague bearer that involved people hurling flasks of oil, torches, bed rolls, and a lamp at the plague bearer. It had caught everyone in a 10-foot wide corridor with a 5-foot wide entrance, so only one person could reach it at a time without tumble. Things got messy after a VoP monk tried tumbling through the flaming plague bearer's square, and then the wizard used his wand of web while there were flaming bedrolls laying on the ground. Might I mention that 5 people had fallen prone so a retarded fighter could shoot at the plague bearer with a bow, and then the barbarian was trying to persuade me that bull-rushing over 5 prone people and shield bashing the plague bearer was legal. I got so annoyed that I just struck all the PCs dead, and we stopped this insane thing.

I don't kill my pcs, they kill themselves.

3. 12th level 6 pc (epl 18) fighting 2 frost giants (cr 14 encounter do to unstable cealing +3) in some ice caves. I told them several times that they notice the cealing is cracked and unstable. The wizard told the party that they need to be quiet avoid loud noises. this same wizard then decided that a fire ball was neccisary to fight the frost giants. Boom cealing colapses killing 3 pc buring 2 others one the monk who was guarding the rear against reinforcments I allowed a ref save to avoid the colapse he made it but didn't make it out of the caves.

I don't kill my pcs, they kill themselves.

4. Party of 6 5th level charicters have to cross an underground ravine. very deep 400' deep, 20' jump (dc20) dificult but posible mage had jump spell monk ring of jumping. the party was un aware that there was a cave fisher above this a line strung at the shortest point. The monk jumps gets caught by the fisher and starts to get draged up. the fighter/ rogue jumps to grab the monk and continues up with the monk. the copy cat cleric in full plate armor decides to go for the ride also and jumps on. there is now an excese of 600lbs on the line the cave fisher fails its strength check and is pulled off its ledge. the fisher and half the party fall into the ravine obviously to there death. the mage then jumps across the ravine. the bard then jumps but botches the roll. the wizard makes a maraculus reflex check to grab the bard. the bard who has this thing about people touching him punches the mage. rolls 20 three times consecitivly knocking the mage out. and falls into the revine to his death. this leaves an knocked out mage on one side and the parties fighter on the other. The fighter stips off his armor because he has no hope of making the jump with it on. He then throws it into the rivine. he tries the jump rolls 6 +4 =10' very short. leaving the mage who with no spell no book (the cleric was carring it) no map (the rogue had it) no companions.
The mage got lost in the cave and was never heard from again (player opted to make new charicter with everyone else rather than continued) oh had the party spent the time to search they would have found the place where the kobolds that lived in the caves stashed boards to cross the ravine away from the fisher. :allalone:

I don't kill my pcs, they kill themselves. :nonono:
but they are learning

I don't DM that often and I don't tend to kill my players when I do. However, I can testify that Khelvaster does both of these, as I play with him frequently. In his killing off of the 8 third level characters, I was assisting him in DMing, mostly keeping track of Initiative counts, monster health, etc. And he ran the first encounter magnificently, if possibly a little too intelligently. After all, hydras have animalistic intelligence, and the skeleton template wasn't helping either. Those 8 bite attacks tore through the wizard incredibly quickly, and the monk died soon after (poor guy had only 16 ac), the druid too was down for the count. The party was saved :weep: by the orcish fighter (the only one smart enough to pack a bludgeoning weapon) took down the hydra skeleton in probably the only smart action in the encounter, bashing the monster with a warhammer. All in all, expert DMing on Khelvaster's part. :D

I recall when my party went to slay a scary white dragon that liked to do fly-by attacks. After a lot of fighting the dragon finally landed near the party and started munching on the wizard, who promptly perished.

Then the dragon reared up with wings spread in preparation to let go its breath weapon. My rogue stepped in front of the dragon and shot him in the throath, all very heroic. The rogue then let out a whoop and turned around to show his party members just how increddibly cool he was, only to have the white dragon collapse on top of him and crush him to death.

Yeap, smart.

Thanks for setting those classes straight. Everything had become a bit muddled after that plague bearer encounter. A quick note: If the skeletal hydra is being controlled by a hidden necromancer, then the necromancer's INT is indeed how the hydra plays. I generally think hydras are generally on the high-end of their CR.

7. This was a few months ago. Level 7 party of 4 goes into a room only to find a seven and five headed hydra there. This is CR 8 encounter. If I hadn't helpfully pointed out to the PCs that they could just hide in a room with a 5-foot door and snipe, they would have been killed. As it was, I had spread out the attacks among different party members.

I know this is for if you've killed you PCs
but I'd just like to share my thought on the matter.
They are that if I even tried before she'd reached
at least tenth level. The girl who plays the elf Bard
would reach across the table and strangle me

This isn't the first '1001 PC deaths' thread... ;)

I'll add my latest; Barbarian BBEG. 18 strength, +1 vicious greataxe, bull's strength potion, and rage. 26 strength critical hit (3x crit on that axe!). 65 damage later...

Well... I didn't actually kill him... Let me explain the situation.

The PCs (Party Level: 3) enter the fourth level of the dungeon (CR 4, and they actually KNOW that!). Upon entering, they are greeted by three orc warriors. The magician wins the initiative. He jump out from behind the group right in the face of the orcs (well, he didn't get any AoO, at least) and then cast Burning Hands... 4 damages (my orcs had 9 hp each). Needless to say, the orcs were next in the initiative, one hit the mage, 12 damages, the mage is down (-4), the other approach, then use a Coup de Grace... Could you really blame me for killing the PC?

Another time (same player, same game, I told him to remake another PC, and he took, a Half-Orc), in the same dungeon (two days later), they are at the sixth level of the dungeon and are charged by a minotaur. The Half-Orc Ranger attacks blindly (along with the other two, the Dwarven Fighter and Human Samurai). He gets wasted by the minotaur's charge (about 5d6 or something). Once the minotaur is dead, the two remaining players, roleplaying that their PCs had a grudge against the orcs for killing their friend (see the first paragraph), leave the half-orc there, dying. He doesn't succeed in stabilizing and dies. Those players are really playing with fire!

Just today...he didnt die though, sadly....
The party, lvl 3, is traveling through a marsh, and get into a fight, they win and start looting bodies. A few minutes later, in flies a black dragon and demands their gold. The elf starts mouthing off to the dragon, so the dragon picks him up, tears off his brand-new, magical cloak, and drops him back down into the mud. The elf lies unconscious underwater, and yet none of the party seems to care. Then with phenomenal bandying of words, the dwarf gets the dragon to fly off. This guy is drowning to death...then I decided I wasnt going to kill anyone on their first session...sigh...An NPC ranger strode up out of the mists and pulls the guy to safety. Of course, then the ranger steals the party's keg of ale...

At least that explains why the elf was such an idiot.

I've really only had one PC death in my game, so...
The PC's are adventuring in a part of the land wherin magic does not work. Coincidentally, it also contained a large store of dinosaurs. And so it came that they fought a T-Rex.
Round 1: Barbarian and Cleric charge the big lizard. Big lizard smacks the cleric up something fierce, and then (improved) grabs him.
Round 2: *Chomp* *Gulp*
Round 3: Repeated bashing on the part of the barbarian brings the dino down. Tearing open the belly to get the cleric...ew.

On the plus side, there was an order of monks/clerics there to rez him later (longer story).
