The first thing that the PC's in my campaign do when they enter a new town/city is head to the bar. If I don't have something planned for them to do there, they start a fight. One session, all three encounters that took place happened in the bar. They love it there. However, I'm running out of ideas. Help me out with some suggestions about encounters (be they games, fights, stories, etc.) that can take place in the tavern.

Have the barkeep (fed up of all the fighting) pay a wizard to animate the inn, so it fights the PC's when they start a fight :P

That'll show em

*plot hook* The inn later gets a mind of its own and wanders off to kill things, and it's the pc's fault entirely :P

all one NPC, sittign at the bar, can say and ever says is "*Sigh* Times are tough."

A bad joke. (A lich, a vampire, and a cleric of pelor walk into a bar...)

the city guard come and arreste avery one who participate in the fight. Then the PC who started the fight are sentence to death (yeah this city are heavy with rules, but hte criminal rate of the city his VERY low) Now they most escaped from there, but the guard are strong and the PC don't have there equipements. Don't forget a sorcerer or wiz without a spell component cannot cast spell (except if they have Eschew material) and the guard can wake them up every 3 hours, so your spelcaster won't be able te regen there spell.

If your team have monk or paladin, you should maybe think to make them loss tere class since the start a rumble, and it's usually against the rule to start a rumble in a bar just for fun

What alignment are the PCs?

1) Young boy (like 6 years old) tries to pick on the the PC's pockets and gets spotted. What do they do?
2) Mild mannered half orc is getting all kinds of dirty looks, and a couple racial slurs are thrown around. The orc is just quietly having his drink, not really taking notice of the insults, but the barkeep asks him to leave for disturbing the place.
3) One of the PCs spots a server slip a piece of paper to a shady looking guy, who promptly gets up and heads for the door -- lots of directions you could take this one.
4) Drunken bard gets up on a table and starts singing a drinking song, much to the barkeep's chagrin, and he's asked to sit down or leave.
5) OMFG, they ran out of beer!
6) Rich, snobby looking woman walks in, accosts a young woman having a drink with a man. Starts shouting at her, accusing her of disgracing her family, and reminding her she's been forbidden from spending time with "that man."
7) An elf walks in, says he's the best drinker in the land and gets laughed at. He challenges anyone in the bar to beat him in a drinking contest -- they can wager however much gold they want, and if even one of them can beat him, he'll pay everyone back twice what they paid to bet. A dwarf with 20 Con, in on the scam, immediately holds up 50 platinum and says he'll show the sissy what a real drinker looks like. The elf uses magic to cheat (either an item or a spell), and the duo goes from town to town pulling the same act. Spellcraft to notice the spell, sense motive to realise they're trying to cheat somehow.
8) A man is playing a game of dice with people, but using sleight of hand to cheat. PCs notice on a spot check.
9) A rich looking gentleman leaves a trinket on his seat. It sells for 7 gold, or the PCs can track him down and return it to him.
10) One of the PCs notices a smooth talking man slip something into an attractive woman's drink. He leaves with her soon after.
11) At a booth in the corner, a woman pulls out a shortsword and shows it to the man she's with, he tells her to show him later and looks around, seemingly very worried someone might have noticed.
12) A gnome refuses to pay his entire bill for the night, says it's unfairly high and offers to pay about two thirds of it, which he says is what it would've been at a bar in his home town. A bouncer comes over and tries to talk some sense into him -- the difference is only a few sp, but neither the gnome nor the barkeep are willing to budge on the issue, and both are very angry with each other.
13) A shady looking man offers to sell one of the PCs some rare Elven pornography for 10 gp.
14) A drunk is making an ass of himself, annoying everyone in the bar, and a rogue lifts a large sum of money out of his pocket. The drunk doesn't notice, but a PC does. If confronted, the rogue says it was "******* tax."
15) Several woman enter at once, and attempt to get drunks to give them money.
16) 10 armed soldiers from the Church of St. Cuthbert enter and order everyone to leave: they aim to shut down the bar for serving alcohol without a license.
17) The authorities show up to arrest a fugitive who was spotted drinking at the bar. He resists arrest.
18) A debate breaks out over which is the best brand of beer: the one brewed a few miles west, or the one brewed a few miles east. The areas to east and west have a huge rivalry, and this inn happens to be located almost exactly in the middle. Both brands of beer taste terrible.
19) Someone walks in the door, staggers, babbles something incoherant and collapses. He was drugged, and remembers nothing.
20) An Ogre wants a drink, but can't fit through the front door, and nevertheless continues to try to squeeze through. The bouncers are too afraid to say anything.
21) Someone trys to sell the PCs drugs, saying how much better the high is than booze.
22) A regular at the bar gets far drunker than usual, and passes out from the booze -- only to return to its true form of a Medium sized dragon, which had polymorphed into a human!
23) During the course of the evening, several rats scurry across the floor, and the barkeep curses the guy who'd promised to kill them off.
24) An acolyte of Heironeous distributes pamphlets about the evils of drinking.
25) The next night, the same acolyte is back, but this time a drunk punches him right in the face.

Huzzah! Actually got to 25... ran out of inspiration at 16, walked away, came back two minutes later and finished it up. Good thing you didn't ask for 100, I would've been up all night. :P

Wow, WCH. Very nice ideas. Some of those are pretty funny. I'll have to use a couple of those. The PC's are lvl. 8-9 and are evil. They can take on just about anything in a town/city except high level classes. I thought about having an afflicted lycanthrope (warewolf) become aware of his disease in the bar that night. Everything's fine in the bar until he starts screaming in pain. Seconds later he changes shape against his will and begins attacking the people at his table or the next one over... or the PC's. Maybe someone will even get afflicted too. :plotting:

25 Huh? Very nice ones WCH. Lemme try. We had the barfight already...

1) A young black human woman in white armor and white make-up enters, heavily armed and in chainshirt. She walks to one of the elves in the tavern and challenges the poor man to a duel on life and death.
2) When a <insert unusual race, such as orc> PC sits down, his chair abruptly breaks and the barman wants money from the PC
3) A poor man comes in and begs for money, much to the barkeeper's annoyance
4) One of the local patrons becomes too physical to one of the waitresses and the waitress complains, but can't get away.
5) A young woman can be found crying in the corner. (She's a wizard and lost her animal companion, but the creature is not dead)
6) The chandelier at the ceiling is starting to collapse (and the PCs get to notice it 1 round before it falls)
7) Another group of adventurers enter with their loot from another dungeon.
8) Another group of adventurers enter and confront one of the patrons for selling them a fake map/map of a recently invaded dungeon ;)
9) During a knife-throwing act, the woman is accidentally hit in the chest. Only magical healing can save her.
10) An Acolyte of Heironeous comes in and preaches in favor of drinking alcohol.
11) You see an assasin kill one of the sleeping local patrons without anyone else noticing.
12) A section of the ceiling comes down with a bed on top of it and in the bed 2 ex-sleepers
13) A bard enters, cleanly shaven and in red ski-ing outfit, making a large swinging gesture with his arm, yelling. "Heeey! Biertje?
14) A group of smurfs passes by, at the moment they walk past the door you here: "Is it still far?"
15) A local noble stops by the inn for the night's rest and all in the room are asked to leave
16) A known scrooge enters the tavern and starts to buy rounds for everyone of the most expensive beer
17) A Cleric of Mystra enters and starts to tell slightly inaccurate stories about magic
18) When looking around, one of the Patrons appears to have an amulet with the holy symbol of Cyric/Vecna
19) A Pseudodragon enters and tells stories about his master (a wizard)
20) You see someone casting 2 spells and then continue sitting at the table drinking his beer (major image and invisibility)
21) A bard enters and performs a new kind of music (rock for example :P), but it does not get appreciated.
22) The local rebel (CG) enters, closely followed on his heels by a group of Hexorian/Banish guards. He pleas for protection.
23) A group of Elven Arcane Archers enter in search of prospective members
24) The illusion magic of a visiting illusionist suddenly start to fail.
25) A stork enters, carrying a baby, reading the name of one of the PCs. "Delivery!"

There you go.

well seems like you have them all, but you could take some inspiration from El Mariachi, Desperado, Dusk till Dawn and other mexican bars....

A bar could for example be the place of the local gang... a bunch of tough guys with even tougher bosses... PCs starting a fight here could soon realize they're in trouble.

I've run a game where the barman turned out to be an evil necromancer, and flooded the village with undead during the night before beating one of the PC's around the head with an iron bar (and indeed i was on the end of that as well - if you're reading, thankyou lucien it was one of the best games of DnD i've played).

Soo.... going on the already numbered ones, i'd say im starting at 51:

51) The barman is actually the BBEG in disguise, scouting for info on the party
52) The bar is haunted
53) The bar is filled with annoyed clerics who *think* the bar is haunted. Really, it's the passing Olidammara-worshiping bard ;)
54) The bar is really just the top of a secret underground hideout of rebels
55) All the customers and the barman are psions.
56) In response to the PC's last visit, the bar now has Golem "Bouncers"
57) The place where you enter the bar is not necessarily the place you leave; the bar travels from place to place.
58) The Inn has been cursed by a local teetotal mage - all alcohol which enters the building is inexplicably turned to urine ("Because that's all it is. Poison!" :P)
59) The Inn isn't there! it's been burnt down/demolished by raiders
60) Unseen Servants serve the visitors drinks (The barman is a sorcerer)
61) As a staging post on their way to a military battle, a platoon of soldiers have set up "camp" around the inn and are now getting thoroughly sloshed ^^
62) The Drunken Masters are in town!
63) Someone is poisoning drinks at the inn, and business is falling

Definitly stealing some of these. Golom bouncers should slow down most partys to at least thinking before they cause to much trouble.

They already did this. The bar in the other town belongs to them and the barkeep acts as their eyes and ears in the city. They built a second story above the bar where they rest and keep their gear. It's like their HQ. That is how much they love bars.

So you're playing the D&D equivalent of Cheers?

64. Everybody comes to know them so well, they call them by name.

65. Diane gets angry at Sam.

Just kidding.

You know, in one of these Dungeon Magazines, or Dragon Magazines, or whatever, from the past few years, there was an adventure called Sinkhole! where a whole inn fell into a giant sinkhole where some shadow creatures were using the caverns below for going back and forth between dimensions.

My own DM ran us through that. It wasn't too bad. You might want to look for that one. You could adapt it to your own game. Give the players a shock when their favorite hangout falls a hundred feet down into a cavern. Then they'd have to find a new home to get drunk and brawl in.

The bard is singing the story, and has the facts confused, and the PC's are actually local heroes...eg, Janestown.

A guy sits at the bar and is drinking heavily. Every once in a while he shouts out a statement, some of which are leads to treasure and adventure and some are just play nonsense. The PCs are told the guy has been "touched by the Gods" and he tries to drown his visions with alcohol.

The Bartender sells them the Bar. :)
This one works out quite well, especially if the party is returning from an adventure and have lots of cash on hand.

Have the bar owner eyeball the coin and then offer to sell the place to them for what they have right there. He's been meaning to retire and quit the business... you know, too many bar fights and he's getting too old to handle them.

When the players agree, he signs over the deed, takes the coin and quickly grabs his hat and leaves.

Only later do they realize the place is being shaken down by the local thieves guild for protection money...
