| Millennium03-27-07, 10:13 AM | It's very difficult to convert directly between 1e and 3.5e; there really isn't a formalized system for it. However, the 3.5 SRD should be a big help for things like this. There's a very nice (and heavily cross-linked) version of it at http://d20srd.org |

| Malraux03-27-07, 10:30 AM | …Except for the Conversion Manual on the WotC site. I can't seem to find a link, can anybody else find one to help the OP out? The conversion manual exists primarily to convert characters to 3.5, not monsters. Monsters are best rewritten rather than converted. |
| Alcornus03-27-07, 10:31 AM | I also use the wonderful thing called DM's Discretion to balnace out taking some rules from 1st and some from 3.5 and my Players aren't confused But It's starting to get to me |
| Rough_Trade03-27-07, 10:51 AM | The conversion manual exists primarily to convert characters to 3.5, not monsters. That's not what I'm talking about. There is a Conversion Manual on the WotC site for converting 2nd edition material to 3rd edition – I'm sure it would be just as useful for 1st edition material, as it is so close to 2nd. |
| Malraux03-27-07, 11:06 AM | http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/conversionbook.zip for the link. However, it is really more about converting characters, as I said earlier. The small section on monsters lists what stuff in the old system equates to in the new system, but doesn't really provide an algorithm for doing so. From the small bit of conversion I've done from 2nd to third, I'd say that you're much better off keeping the concept and then creating from whole cloth. INTRODUCTION This booklet is intended to help you preserve the best of your old D&D campaign as you adopt the new rules. Various sidebars, such as the one on this page, are provided to remind you of what has changed. The rest of the booklet contains advice on converting your favorite player characters and their equipment to the new rules, along with some notes for the Dungeon Master on convert- ing old monsters that have not yet appeared under the new rules. |
| dungeonmasterblog03-27-07, 12:34 PM | Rought Trade probably has the best suggestion. You're still probably going to have to pony up and buy a DMG and MM in 3.5. Converting characters isn't a huge deal but getting the new Monster Manual will save you a ton of time because they you'll have your set stock of monsters ready to play. I treat the two as seperate games. A character transfer from one to the other would be 'rerolled'. (well, without actually rerolling the stats, just rebuilt from one up) Certain monsters disappeared altogether (like the thoul and the rock baboon) so those I remade using the HD and special attacks as a guide. |
