For one of my players, he wants to become a dragon themed characters. For the starting rules, everyone was level 1 or 2, with an additional LA +1, if they wanted a more powerful race/template. This is a 3.5 game.

What I was thinking was taking the draconic template

(SRD)An ‘Animal’ become a
‘Magical Beast’, otherwise
type is unchanged.
Natural Armor +1
Str +2
Con +2
Cha +2
CR +1

Low-light vision
Darkvision 60’
+4 Racial bonus on saves vs. sleep & paralysis
+2 Racial bonus on Spot & Intimidate checks
Gain Damage Category 3 Claw attack.

I believe this is a LA+1 template, but it's also 3.0 Can any of you rule Gods out there help me with this one?

It seems balanced enough, if you want to house rule it. I don't know about the different categories of claw attacks, but I would just give the character a pair of claw attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage each (for medium characters, this damage scales with the creature's size).

Otherwise, you can always defer to the different dragon bloodlines from Unearthed Arcana as a decent reference.

It was also updated to 3.5 in the Draconomicon.

That template was in Draconomicon, a 3.5 book. The reason it's in the Crystal Keep 3.0 book is because it was in a Dungeon Draconomicon teaser, before the 3.5 core books were released.

What about it is particularly tied to 3.0?

What about the ahlf-dragon template? Or does the +3 LA not mix well?
