| Herr Doktor12-01-03, 08:32 PM | Page 282 in the DMG has a Behind the Curtain sidebar on Magic Item Gold Piece Values. One of the listings says:--Item Requires Specific Class or Alignment to Use: Even more restrictive than requiring a skill, this limitation cuts the cost by 30% My question is... Does this mean that if the item would only be useful for a particular class/alignment, or can you create an item that only works for Neutral Evil characters and functions as a normal piece of equipment otherwise and it'd cost 30% less to create? My group was arguing about this... Personally I feel this is just talking about items like the monk's tatoo from Magic of Faerūn that is only really useful if you're a monk. |

If you, as DM, decide to place a +1 Mace in an adventure that can only be used by Lawful characters, then you might want to consider applying the reduction. The party will use it or not, depending on their alignments and other equipment, but when selling it to an NPC he might offer less gold for it, since it will possibly be harder for him to sell. If I, as a player of a LG human cleric with the Craft Magic Arms and Armor, want to make a +2 Bane (human) Longsword that only works for Lawful Good human clerics, then the price should NOT be reduced. I'm making this for my own use, and the "restrictions" are actually benefits (since the sword can't be taken away and used against me, most likely). You shouldn't give a discount for a benefit. |
| True Balance12-01-03, 11:43 PM | i love these posts. actually an illinformed munchkin could say its as much as a 70% discount. 30% off for specific class, 30% for specific alignment, and 10% off if require a skill check to activate, and dont forget its half price to create an item anyway. monte cook, one of the 3.0 PHB authors has a section on his website about this abuse. the reason i say that is if your players want to argue any about this you can say that abuse is restricted by the author of the rule. its totally abusive to allow those discounts. you can end up with rediculously powerful items for next to nothing. only allow a small discount if it actually hinders the item. rlwilde is totally correct. |
