| Cheiro10-18-04, 10:31 AM | Has anyone used Meenlocks (MM2) in a third edition game (3.0 or 3.5)? I know they are trivial in hand to hand combat, but it seems to me that if they have lots of places to spy on the party from hiding, they are very deadly. Specifically, how did you handle their rend mind ability? It has a 300 foot range and I would think that it would be very difficult for PCs to locate or retaliate against a brood of meenlock attackers. Meenlocks have a reasonable hide skill (+12 in the 3.5 update) and can dimension door 60 feet every 2 rounds. Aside from running away very quickly, I don't see how a low level party could handle them. Heck, I'm not sure how a mid to high level party would handle them- if the wizard can spot them, maybe he could magic missile them (assuming that the meenlocks need Line of Sight to use their rend mind). The average meenlock only has 18 hit points. Other than that... even if you fail your will save only on a 1, the rend mind ability will succeed about every 7 minutes, and this will soon reduce even the wisest cleric to catatonia in under an hour. Longer if restorations are used, but still... So what have DMs done with these nasty critters? |

Just toss them in, if they are adaptable they will survive, that is after all the principal behind survival of the fittest. |
| Ahnehnois10-18-04, 12:42 PM | That brings back memories. :D I threw a bunch of them at my huge and very powerful party as their first encounter (well, one of the first) at night. They survived, but barely. I think they hurt the things enough such that some of them retreated. I drained the cleric to 0 wis in that battle! Mmm... |
| StevenO10-19-04, 01:20 AM | The current (Nov 04) issue of Dungeon magazine has an adventure using Meenlocks as the primary opponent. I haven't played it yet but it does demonstrate the use of their abilities. |
| Grayson10-19-04, 07:05 AM | I haven't looked at a Meenlock in nearly a decade.. but after skimming this thread, I'm gonna go grab my MM2 right now :D |
| Grayson10-19-04, 07:59 AM | Well, read up on them while eating. Man, those are *nasty* little beasties! Definately going to make an appearance in the game I'm running ;) |
| Phrennzy10-19-04, 12:33 PM | I had no idea they were that small. The fact that they 'convert' is horrific. And that you can't easily follow them into their tunnels to take the fight to them. I think they may just make an appearance in my campaign. |
| Didge10-19-04, 02:27 PM | I just used three of them in my most recent game. They fit in perfectly for what I had wanted in regards to a kidnapping kids/slave organization working in some abandoned mines beneath a hidden temple in the sewers of a major city (Boy does THAT sound cliche!). Anyway, I didn't use them as effectively as I should have. I tend to skim monsters, and forgot to open with their mind rend or their ability. They were in cohoots with an ogre and that did however make for a devistating pairing. I forgot that after the dimension door they are still disorientated, and needless to say one of them was cut down quite quickly. Although the Ogre did receive flanking for two rounds (which did matter). The one that was left, tried unsucessfully to use his paralysis but ended up striking the cleric that has Travel as one of his domains. He fails his save, but his Freedom of Movement activated and freed him (Boy was he glad, as he forgot he had this ability, hehe). The creature then popped off his fear effect (to no avail) the next round and decided to flee (as he was beginning to take a beating) until he could use his dimension door again. The last one was butchering helpless children which only caused my players to go nuts. When they dealt with the ogre who was blocking the path, the thing used dimension door to escape. My players are convinced that these things are some type of demon, and now worried about some outer planer creatures plans for this realm. I love creative players, I think I'll encorparate that into the storyline. |
| Grayson10-19-04, 02:35 PM | Heh, I was thinking about it earlier. One of these guys is pretty brutal, but a handful of them... lord oh mighty, three of these things could wreak soooo much havoc. Or even one that's advanced with levels of Sorcerer.. imagine one of these guys with Improved Invisibility and Fly.. *insert evil cackle here* |
