5 foot adjustment [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-07-05, 07:29 PM Me and a friend are always arguing about whether or not a 5 foot adjustment provokes an attack of oppurtunity if you are moving from one threatened square to another. It says a five foot adjustment does not provoke AoO, but at the same time you are leaving a threatened square.
Six people side with me but the one PC (who spends more time DM'ing than anything else) says it does. I say it doesn't. Is there a referee or two to clarify on this rule?

08-07-05, 07:32 PM A five foot step does NOT provoke attacks of opportunity... that's why you can (generally) take only one per turn, and even THEN only if you don't take any other move action that round. When thinking of a five-foot-step out of combat, think not of someone calmly walking away from their enemy... think of someone ducking, doging, and being as effective defensively as possible so as to disengage from combat.

Note that the 5 ft. step free action is not the same as moving 5 ft., and the text referenced lists a bunch of situations where you cannot take a 5 ft. step.

If the text won't convince them, show them the example on pg 145, where Mialee and Tordek both use 5 ft. steps for the explicit purpose of avoiding (movement based) AoOs.
