| Generic Fighter06-29-05, 02:17 AM | DM:"A search of the BBEGs stronghold turns up 8,430GP, a Shield +2 and a gem-encrusted ring." PCs:"Another gem-encrusted ring? I wonder why every BBEG has one of those?" The answer is, of course, that this DM, like many, doesn't have the time to come up with more interesting treasure. Which is exactly the reason I'm starting this thread. To help my fellow DMs I will need your help, too! All you have to do to help is post a few interesting treasure items in this thread. Here are some examples to get you started. 1: A book entitled "The Habitat and Mating Rituals of the Common Basilisk" that is permanately held open to page 32 by a petrified human hand that has been broken off at the wrist. 2: An electrum pint Beer Mug engraved with the following, "Property of the Laughing Dragon Inn, Talonburg" 3: Marble chess set haunted by a former owner. He plays a mean game;) 4: Detailed color map of the local area with several previously unknown ruins marked. 5: Massive stone slab with writing in three different lanuages on it. One apeares to be Draconic, the others are unknown. 6: A heavily locked box. Inside is what apears to be an ordinary rock and a roll of parchment. Written on the parchment is the following: "Possible Philosifers Stone, DO NOT THROW AWAY!" written in several different languages. 7: A rock with Continual Flame cast on it. :P 8: Magic Frying Pan that can cook food without a fire, grants a +5 bonus to Profession: Chef checks. Also can be used as a weapon (+1 Flaming Light Mace equivilent). I'll post some more once I get a few replies. Thanks in advance:) Generic Fighter:fight!: |

| JadeSpider964306-30-05, 06:43 AM | If your ever in need of completly random inspiration just dig around in The Basement (http://www.warehouse23.com/basement/[/url) for a few minutes. They got some insanly random stuff in there, most of it isn't quite approiate for a fantasy setting, but you can tweak almost anything to work. Or at the very least you might get inspired. (Note: If you find something you like, or even THINK you like, COPY IT! You can't get back to it if you open another box) Here's one of my favorite enteries I copied off: A 10" gear of an unidentifiable gray-green metal. Anyone who spends more than an hour in the presence of the gear can hear, at the edge of perception, the clacking and grinding of many similar gears. They will hear this for the rest of their life. Every 24 hours in the gear's presence after this, the level of noise doubles. Eventually, the grinding of the gears becomes the person's entire world, and they will leave their life to "find the machine that drives the infinite." |
| High King Tigernmas06-30-05, 06:56 AM | I (cheaply) put an 'Ocarina Of Return' in on game... Essentially all it did was teleport you round the dungeon... Also one time I had EVERY bad guy had a statuette of their goddess on them... 10. A magic pig that you can kill and eat one day, but it regenerates the next. 11. A plate that breaks whenever a lie is spoken over it, and is fixed when a truth is spoken. |
| SwitchUK06-30-05, 07:42 AM | 12: I once put a stick in a powerful NPC bad guy's pocket, just for kicks and giggles... The confusion it generated was classic. 13: A stack of twenty platinum pieces rest on the desk, affixed to each other and to the surface with sovereign glue. 14: A luxuriously warm, furry hat, cloak, pair of boots, scarf or pair of gloves, made from the pelt of a winter wolf. (borrowed from Icewind Dale II - grants cold reistance 5 and +1 charisma) 15: A tome entitled "The Joye of Carnalitie" 16: a Zippo lighter. 17: A print of the BBEG's mother and father, in a valuable silver frame. 18: an item that, while magical, is at the same time a bit useless (such as a potion of create water - sprinkle it out, and it turns into an equivalent volume of water, or an invisible ring of invisibility, or a returning throwing axe that returns to the hand instantly, before hitting anything.) 19: A cage with a petrified bird inside. The bird has been plated in gold, and adorned with valuable gems 20: A handkerchief, a tank top, a pair of green rubber boots, and a pair of small, round glasses, inside a Heward's Handy Haversack. Anyone who dons this gear immediately has their intelligence reduced to 3 and is compelled to stomp around yelling "MY BRAIN HURTS!" at full volume until somebody forcibly removes one of the garments. However, so long as the garments are worn, the wearer's strength score increases by the same amount by which their intelligence was reduced. |
| High King Tigernmas06-30-05, 07:52 AM | 21. A locked wooden box with magic flowing aroung it. When the player inevitably opens it a soul flies out and tries to possess them. 22. Slim-fast and the necromancers' diary in which you find ever page he has written not magic spells, but about how he is so fat and is never going to make the cheerleading team. 24. A ring of wushes: Wish all you want, but all you’ll get in response is a wushing sound. 41. A mismatched pair of boots of levitation and dancing. |
| namesbeenchanged06-30-05, 10:19 AM | 42) Book entitled "How to rid yourself of unwanted guests" If someone opens the book it triggers a dispell magic trap on all the explosive runed pages..." 43) Book entitled "Complete guide to manners" (if players read book, they gain the feat (skill focus (knowledge (manners: table and otherwise)) 44) Book entitled "Basic cooking" (gives +2 bonus to survival checks) 45) Book entitled "The secrets of keeping someone occupided indefinately" [Page 1 starts out as: "The secrect of keeping someone occupided indeinately (have the last 2 words start to fade and then the next xxxx pages blank and then last line of last page. The book does radiate some faint magical arua (the only magical thing about the book is that it keeps the dust off itself) |
| scott64406-30-05, 11:55 AM | 46. A tin piece (a money item from a custom campaign, where tin pieces are worth 1/10 of a copper) enchanted to function as a +1 sacred (created by a priest of the patron deity of beggars and the poor) bonus to AC, but also enchanted to show no magic aura. |
| High King Tigernmas06-30-05, 04:30 PM | 47. (Something I had to deal with) Talking books, that lie on the shelf, but run around animated when pulled off. They then offer help for you and from years of neglect are all slightly exccentric. |
| Draconis V06-30-05, 05:03 PM | 48. A ham sandwich, minus one bite (best if they caught him by surprise). If they actually bother to check it out, you can make it turn out to be anything you want, like a +2 holy vorpal ham sandwich. My favorite is a baleful polymorphed innkeeper who the BBEG was torturing. 49. A nearly-complete collection of Beanie Babies. 50. The floor. No, really, it's made of solid gold. Do with it what you will. :P |
| High King Tigernmas06-30-05, 05:20 PM | 51. A drug stash (whats the paladin gonna do now) 52. If they are male, then girls clothes, and have the dying bad guy have enough breath left to make excuses... 53. Every single one of ABBAs album, with a signed picture of Bjorn...In a shrine... |

| Shaken, not Stunned06-30-05, 07:28 PM | 55) A ball-and-cup. If someone succesfully puts the ball in the cup via swinging the enitire apparatus (touch attack at -20 against an AC equal to the characters total attack roll result +1), that character gains a permenant +1 to dexterity. |

Not a properly functional one, but a highly decorative ceremonial saber, epees or rapier with a platinum blade, and an ornate basket hilt made from electrum and encrusted with rubies, diamonds and star sapphires, with a lacquered mahogony scabbard decorated with mother-of-pearl, silver and gems. - A ceremonial or dress dagger, as above. |
| Guy Humual06-30-05, 07:43 PM | 62) String: 122 000 miles of it . . . cut into three inch lengths :D |
| narukagami06-30-05, 07:54 PM | 63) 7 orange crystal balls with stars in them numbering 1-7. If your player are anime fans they'd know what to do. Except these balls summon a great wyrm green dragon who is very ****** and attempts to kill the party. 64) A +1 no bladed sword. 65) Arrows of Cure Moderate Wounds |
| Shaken, not Stunned06-30-05, 07:56 PM | Wait, so he has to beat an AC that is equal to his OWN ATTACK ROLL plus one? which is totally impossible, in other words. That is the point, after all. Though it may be possible through some finagling of various modifiers (and a feat or two) and a combination of haste and a time stop, but that is neither here nor there. |
| Chaotic Nothing06-30-05, 08:01 PM | 66) The Shimmering Gold codpiece that enhances masculine region x4 and casts charm person 3 times a day at will. |
| SwitchUK06-30-05, 08:05 PM | Or a "limited wish", "Wish" or "Miracle" spell... |
| kaeso06-30-05, 08:06 PM | 66) a pebble that, when it touches your hand, flies up and hits you in the head. afterwards it flies back to your hand, and upon touching your hand flies at your head again. the only way to stop this is for someone to take it from your hand, but guess what happens when it touches their hand... |
| Ekranoplan06-30-05, 08:08 PM | 63) 7 orange crystal balls with stars in them numbering 1-7. If your player are anime fans they'd know what to do. Except these balls summon a great wyrm green dragon who is very ****** and attempts to kill the party There is a difference between anime fans and Dragon Ball Z fans. 67: Ice, a whole storage room full. 68- A collection consisting of every Nation Geographic in perfect condition 69) Haiwaiian T-shirts 70. orange juice maker 71: plutonium 72- A library book owned by the BBEG. The book is 30 years over due, and if the PCs keep it in their possesion they will be pursued by Inevitables. |
| SwitchUK06-30-05, 08:09 PM | 66) a pebble that, when it touches your hand, flies up and hits you in the head. afterwards it flies back to your hand, and upon touching your hand flies at your head again. the only way to stop this is for someone to take it from your hand, but guess what happens when it touches their hand... Which begs the question... how does it turn up as an unattended part of a treasure hoard? |
| Swarms06-30-05, 08:14 PM | 73) A weapon (doesn't matter what kind) that, each time it kills a creature, causes two more of the killed creature's species to appear. Imagine the look on the poor unsuspecying player's face! :D :D :D Player (after a long and grueling battle): I smack the dragon with my sword! OH A CRIT! Is it dead??!?!?! Dm: :plotting: Yep. It dies. Two Green dragons appear in front of you. Players: :OMG! :banghead: Dm:  bwahahahahahaaaaa |
| Ekranoplan06-30-05, 08:15 PM | Which begs the question... how does it turn up as an unattended part of a treasure hoard? The only reasonable solution is to chop off your friend's hand and run away so he will be free of this pebble. I suspose you could use your foot, but that might be kind of hard. |
| Swarms06-30-05, 08:20 PM | Or you could encase the pebble in 6 walls of force. Or you could glue your hand to your head permanently and use an arm of Nyr. Or you could enter an anti-magic field. There are lots of possibiities |
| rbingham200006-30-05, 08:38 PM | The only reasonable solution is to chop off your friend's hand and run away so he will be free of this pebble. I suspose you could use your foot, but that might be kind of hard. Or better yet, find a container to trap the pebble in and use it to snatch the thing out of the air, and then jam the lid on it tight to keep it from escaping. Once that's done, you can dump the thing off into the nearest volcano or something. |
| Ekranoplan06-30-05, 08:46 PM | Or better yet, find a container to trap the pebble in and use it to snatch the thing out of the air, and then jam the lid on it tight to keep it from escaping. Once that's done, you can dump the thing off into the nearest volcano or something. But that requires you to find a container and going to a volcano. |
| Swarms06-30-05, 08:51 PM | ok, you7 could do that, but much easier than going to a volcano and much less painful than the hand removal technique, is (deja vu!) HAVE A SPELLCASTER CAST ANTI-MAGIC FIELD! or even dispel magic! |
| Ekranoplan06-30-05, 09:04 PM | ok, you7 could do that, but much easier than going to a volcano and much less painful than the hand removal technique, is (deja vu!) HAVE A SPELLCASTER CAST ANTI-MAGIC FIELD! or even dispel magic! But what if the pebble is driven by a very sophisticated engine and AI? and not magic. |
| kaeso06-30-05, 09:42 PM | seems like it would be more fun if the only way it could be stopped is if someone has to take it from you. how about it was created by olidammara and with his god powers he made it so that someone else taking it is the ONLY way to stop it from hitting you. its not supposed to be logical, just funny :) 73) the most beautiful painting ever created, but it turns invisible when looked at it directly. magic will not get rid of this enchantment :P (tehy could look at it indirectly, like looking next to it so they can see it in their periferal vision, or looking at it from its reflection in a mirror) |
| Generic Fighter07-01-05, 02:10 AM | Cool stuff, people, and very creative to:) Here's some more from me 74: Wooden teeth made from DarkWood floating in a jar of alchemical liquid. 75: Set of luxury drawing quills. | Yruc07-01-05, 06:57 AM | 82) a button on a block of wood. If / when button is pushed a sock gnome appears and gives back all of PC's unmatched socks that have disappeared over the PC's life time. *Note this angers the sock gnomes and said PC will now randomly loose several socks over the next few months until the sock gnomes have recovered 1d12 more socks than have been returned. Then PC just looses socks as normal PCs do. 83) Ring of sheep control - has command word Bahramewe inscribed on the inside 84) Crystal ball filled with a dark fluid, covered all over except a small section. When looking into this section is causes a piece of wood to float up and become visiable and it has random answers on it (think of a medivial "Magic 8 ball") 85) small robotic dogs that walk along on the ground the wag tail and bark. (I'm sure that would cause many people to convert to one religion or another) 86) 1 Rubber ducky that squeeks when you squeeze it 87) 1 broke rubber ducky that doesn't squeek 88) Crash test dummy (optional if been through a few crash tests already) 89) Book "Poems for any occasion" after reading such book, anytime character says anything in public he will attemp to make it rhyme. 90) Book "What men know about Women" (blank pages) 91) Book "What women know about men Volume 1 of 999" ( Complete the set!!) 92) Hand crank radio that gives out weather reports. 93) Umbrella 94) Candy Ring (the ones you used to get at the store big gob of candy in place of the stone) 95) 1 Red Rose (never wilts) 96) 1 can of insect repellant 97) 1 Ruby slipper. (Of course you must find the other one before the wicked witch of the west gets it) 98) Lucky horse shoe (grants speach to horse) 99) Fog horn in a can 100) Knife, fork, spoon, plate clean themselves after each meal. No drying needed!! 101) Roll twice on this chart |
| kaeso07-01-05, 08:30 PM | a book entitled 'dungeons and dragons' that tells the entire history of the pc's up to the point wehre they pick up the book, and its in comic book form and as they read it more pages appear showing what they are doing at that moment |
| BRJN07-01-05, 08:56 PM | Look around your house for a few interesting but useless (without electricity) gadgets. For instance, the blender. A Nintendo (electric-based magic spell for power) should be funny. A gem-set musical instrument (like a saxophone or flute or lyre). A few of these in a BBEG lair or three could lead the PCs to a bigger BBEG who thinks he is a talented musician, or enjoys siren-like magic. A grand piano. In good tune. With some of the Bling-Bling Evil Guy thread (which see) doodads attached. A pair of Nike gym shoes (gain 125% bonus to distance travelled over reasonably paved surfaces, such as Roman roads). Magical enough to automatically fit any Medium-sized creature's feet. Swoosh logo on side looks like a magic glyph to the characters. The chandelier from Phantom of the Opera. |
| Alynn07-01-05, 09:12 PM | Whatever number) An egg, all knowlege checks will fail. If incubated at 70 degrees for 1d4 days it will open (note: open not hatch) revealing a small greyish humanoid that speaks no known language, it dies 2 days later. Whatever number +1) Strange leaves, if burned and the smoke inhaled, imposes -2 to int and wis scores, and makes the imbuer extremely hungry, also lessens the pain from arthritus. WN+2) A needle, when used for sewing imposes a +3 proficiency bonus on sewing skills. WN+3) A clockwork monkey (with a tag that says Made in [insert Gnomish lands here]) WN+3) A stone that imposes a -2 to Strength, and +1 to Intelligence (mix and match attributes to your liking) WN+4) A fireball wand, with an arrow pointing toward one end and the words, This side toward enemy. The wand is labeled backwards. |
| kaeso07-02-05, 01:29 AM | the DM's D&D books wishlist (if christmas is coming up hehe) |
| Devilfish07-02-05, 03:40 AM | 110) A piece of music that can only be learned from a magic-imbued manual (similar to "Manual of Gainful Excercise" etc) and gives a new, useful form of Bardic music. Examples: fear effect, minor sonic damage, minor mind-affecting damage, etc. 111) A pair of rings that enable the wearers to switch positions as a free action (as if by "dimension door") 1 to 3 times per day. 112) A Forge of Undying Heat, which can heat a weapon to glowing temperatures and leave it that way permanently. Such a weapon inflicts extra thermal damage, but isn't structurally sound. Such a weapon would be a major fire hazard, easily sundered (hardness should go down to no more than 3), and will quickly dull and require constant maintenance. However, it'll also add +1d4 fire damage. Talk about your mixed blessings! 113) For high-end parties, an artifact called a "Universal Bubble," a kink in the material of the cosmos that can be used by a spellcaster to create a personal demiplane as if by the 9th-level psionic power "genesis." If you think about it, this isn't overpowered-- having an extradimensional stronghold is great and all, and makes you feel like King of the World... but does it really make you any more powerful in the real world? The only way this is game-breaking is if the PCs try to sell it for gold. If they do that, SMACK them. 114) A spirit-being or construct created to be a servant, and glad to be free of the BBEG, who treated it unkindly. This would not be a combat cohort, just a maid. Again, this treasure only increases the PCs' power of you allow it to sell well and make them rich. 115) Two flasks of magical "cleaning fluid," capable of rendering any reasonable substance clean and harmless. Got a Green Slime problem? Not anymore. Mummy rot? throw a vial of cleaning fluid at the mummy and it becomes harmless. Got a Black Dragon or Black Pudding to deal with? Ready an action to throw the entire flask of cleaning fluid into the acidic liquid and cause a massive magical-versus-chemical cancellation. BOOM! It should inflict or negate about 1d6 damage per vial, a flask being (I think) 4 vials. |
| Kevtar07-02-05, 08:37 AM | Give all your hirelings a stick (like a previous poster mentioned). The PCs will wonder what the heck this stick means, and pretty soon they'll start to expect a stick and will ignore them. THEN- have them fight a BBEG or maybe a higher-up henchman, preferably a cleric, and the "stick" is actually their focus for their deity (i.e. rosary beads) - However, the Cleric's "stick" is actually a wand/rod/staff (depending on the stick) that adds Wis, or buffs AC, or something along those lines (at least something that doesn't have to be used, so the PCs don't observe the BBEG using the stick). It'll be a great piece of treasure that PCs will not notice, then after they get into town, you can say... "by the way, there was a great fervor in the city a few days back when local village children found this ancient "artifact of antioch" in an abandoned mine a few days ago...." |
| cypherx07-02-05, 12:48 PM | pebble with darkness cast on it permanently. can be suppressed by objects. coin operated horse (powerful, but only lasts 3 rounds per gold piece) a copy of the random treasure chart a pipe with the initials EoS (elminster of shadowdale) he asks for it later frozen fart a cursed cat that hoks up a hairball at the wrong times, has nine lives, and every time you kill it your alignment takes a step towards Chaotic Evil. one more thing: i once had a broom of flying that you had to make feel good about himself and tell him he wasn't just a tool, or he functions as a cursed broom of flying. he is also a story plot device. |
