| Rathje03-18-06, 03:17 AM | How did you explain the game to them? I found one player who got into the mindset that it was like Final Fantasy did quite poorly (to say the least). Tell them it's like acting out all parts of a movie, both action and talking. The movie doesn't include everything, like bathroom breaks or things like that, and neither does the game. However, characters in movies don't solve all their problems through violence. Also, when making backgrounds, the most important things to ask is as follows: Why. "I came from the north. I was a caravan guard." "Why did you come south?" "I wanted money." "Why couldn't you make money up north?" "Uh..." Then talk to them and work something out for the reason why. |
| bloodpheonix03-18-06, 05:19 AM | thank you,i never realy thought about that. i assumed that because they had the basic ability to read they mite be ok but i guess i overestimated them.they are good at killing but when it comes to research they might as well be the village idiot(ok that poor guy deserves some credit he did die from attacking the groups fighter after acusing him for stealing his pig, although the pig never existed) no one has much of a background so i guess i should get that fixed. |

This is done by putting more über-enemies that they just cannot win by fighting and introducing plots, hints and threads that do not reveal their content by just swashbuckling. Don't give the information to characters just by rolling DC15 Gather Information but put them to play it. If they're good, give circumstential bonuses (up to +2, but do not lower the DC). When they're revealed appropriate amount of plot, throw in a decent dungeon with enough traps and puzzles to negate that all-too-famous-concept of fighter-and-sixpack-of-potions. If necessary, use brute annihilation to your PCs to understand the needs of balanced party and roleplaying. As in real life, stupidity and ignorance gets you killed. What comes to reading the rules...Start easy, make everyone understand the basics, e.g. races & classes, skills & feats and basic combat and if necessary basic spellcasting, potions and so forth. E.g. when I started new group (3.5 Ed was unknown to all of us) we decided to not to use Attack of Opportunity until we felt comfortable with the rules. Also when PCs wanted to use something goofy and out of the very basic sets (like grappling, tripping, undesignated use of weapons and so on...) I used "rule 0" in the actual game play, explaining that as the concept is currently uninvestigated we follow for this session rule "undesignated use of weapons = -4 penalty to hit" and during offtime we investigate what the rulebook says. After the session I divided homework... Each player that had introduced unfamiliar concept in the session was given a task to prepare summary from the PHB explaining what the rules said about it. For example: Attack Roll: To score a hit that deals damage on your attack roll, your result must equal or exceed the targets Armor Class (AC) Melee Attack Roll: 1d20 + base attack bonus + Strength modifier + Size (& weapon) bonus Ranged Attack Roll: 1d20 + base attack bonus + Dexterity modifier + Size (& weapon) bonus + Range penalty This way everyone is gradually reading the rules. I also use the concept that if a PC has a feat, the player needs to call it in action. E.g. if a character has an Evasion feat, if I'm calling Reflex Saves they need to react and ask if Evasion is applicable. No freebies.... That's my thoughts... HoD |
