| Eastwood05-24-05, 08:02 AM | Hi Kids, 1 - PC fixes some stairs in his elderly home... Now select a family member who will fall and die due to our PC's handywork. 2 - Bad guy summons ancient evil Wizard from Hell itself! Party fails to stop the bad guy and the evil Wizard emerges... ...but has become a pacifist; "I've just spent a 1000 years in Hell! Nevermore I shall return to that dreaded place!" He becomes an ally to the Party. (make the summoning and the legends about the evil Wizard being summoned very serious, cruel, and bombastic and give the suprise twist a glance of humour) 3 - The Party sets out te rescue a princess, locked in the Tower. She is magically enchanted and she's asleep for a HUNDRED years. Party enters the Tower and there she lies on her satin bed... grandma! (hey, it's been a hundred(!) years!) 4 - Enchanted Princess in a Tower. Only a true Prince could awaken her with a kiss. Prince enters Tower, kisses the Princess... Nothing happens. The Prince is a bastard. (who could be the real father? and Mom has got some explaining to do... to both the Prince and to her King) 5 - Low level Party sets out to destroy the Evil Dragon that terrorizes the land. Once they enter his cave, he locks them in. They're doomed. The Evil Dragon however knows that if the Party fails, other (maybe more powerful) adventurers might come here to do the job. The Dragon offers the Party a deal; He gives'em the remains of some other long dead dragon while he hides and continues to do his mischief in secret. The Partymembers are welcomed home as heroes. They show the (fake) Dragons skull to the King and the Church declares them saints. 6 - Our beloved king is EVILLL! Party finds out and kills him off. No-one believes their story and they are now considered fugitives and traitors to the kingdom. 7 - Partymember joins the Thieves Guild. Along the way however, the Thieves Guild turns out to be a very realistic cult that you cannot escape from; They're everywhere! 8 - Make a deal with one Partymember to try and turn your Party into a cult 9 - Hidden/ Forbidden pregnancies always (and I mean ALWAYS!) make fine additions to the story 10 - ... Encore, encore! |
| Lord of the Underdark05-24-05, 08:50 AM | 6 - Our beloved king is EVILLL! Party finds out and kills him off. No-one believes their story and they are now considered fugitives and traitors to the kingdom. I like to do this one, only make him dominated by some high level illithid or some-such. Then the same happens to his sucessor. Making the hunt for them (The PC's) even more exciting. |
| Sargon05-24-05, 10:25 AM | 11 The BBEG is one of the Characters Father who faked thier death in order to pursue his practises away from his faimly, so they wouldn't be harmed if worse came to worse... Now his son / daughter is her to kill him. |
| Zeful05-24-05, 12:31 PM | 12: the pcs are hired by the barkeep to kill an evil scorcerer. turns out he's not evil he just owes the barkeep money. |
| windquake05-24-05, 03:11 PM | 12: the pcs are hired by the barkeep to kill an evil scorcerer. turns out he's not evil he just owes the barkeep money. Watched "Lost", eh? 13: Just throw a treasure map into a pile of loot that leads far off. It is a great way for the party to leave the long running plot and find some adventure not linked to the story. Let's them have some fun. Of course, the map could be fake. It could be real, but the treasure is long gone. The treasure could still be there. It all depends on the DM's mood. -Windquake |
| Josheva05-24-05, 04:13 PM | 14) I always figured it would be interesting if the BBEG was a chameleon from races of destiny. Just when players buy their awsome armor and prepare AC spells to kill the armored battle master they find an onslaught of spells coming at them. Not a plot twist really but fun. 15) BBEG is an imp using a hat of disguise. 16) It's been used before but get the BBEG to talk to the PC's just before the final blow lands. Keep the denoument just long enough for his fast healing to bring him back up to full health. Twist is the PC's didn't know the heavily cloaked BBEG was a vampire. |
| Sybill05-24-05, 04:23 PM | 17. Have the "evil" lycanthrope the party's been chasing turn out to be a werebear paladin 18. Have said werebear ask the party to help him/her against the other (high-level) paladin that's also been chasing him/her. |
| monkmania05-24-05, 05:29 PM | 19. the chicken wizard guild has hired you to destroy a rogue chicken, with the aid of the guild's chicken ranger. twist: the rogue chicken is really a wolf wearing chicken feathers in disguise. twistier: the chicken ranger was raised by wolves. twistiest: guess who the ranger's father is. this was a planescape campaign... why chickens? there's a reason the god of magic's name is Boc Boc _Boccob_. |
| Josheva05-24-05, 07:35 PM | 20. After retrieving a scroll of wish for a wizard he uses it to become king and must be stopped 21. Wizard uses scroll to enforce a rule that everything everyone says must rhyme. The pc's must now find a genie or something and word their wish to stop it following the rhyming rule! lol 22. The characters are sent on a mission to recover a dragons treasure for someone. The treasure turns out to be a pouch with 3 gold coins in it. The employer is pleased and says he was expecting 2. 23. When sent to free some slaves they are directed by accident towards the prison. (heh think about it. People in cages, cruel guards...) 24. After killing a lich players are pestered to the extreme by the lich's fomer family who want to be reimbursed for their loss. 25. A lich's phylactery is solid gold with diamond studs. Player who finds it first must make a decision. 26. When rolling high on a survival check to hunt the Pc finds a fawn on the ground with its leg caught in a trap, stares up with a glimmer of hope and obvious trust in it's eyes. 27. A mad nobleman accuses PC of trying to steal the rug on his doorstep 28. The rug is animated to wrap around legs of anyone walking on it 29. The BBEG is leader of the main evil organisation, King of the and, and the High priest in a temple (he's either conflicted or a scitzo) 30. BBEG is a PC's parent, kid, or employer 31. ducky |
| Flushmaster05-24-05, 08:16 PM | 32.) While sailing on the high seas, a fast schooner approaches. Upon closing within a few hundred feet, what appears to be a giant slingshot is raised from below decks. It is loaded and fired, sending a squad of heavily armored midgets (small humans, not halflings or gnomes) armed with small greatclubs onton the PCs ship. The midget warriors begin smashing kneecaps and demand that the ship surrender immediately. Another squad is launched over after 2 rounds. |
| captainswift05-24-05, 09:30 PM | 33) The vampire hunter the PC's have been assisting/working for/rivalled with has secretly been using the cremains of his vampire victims to brew a powerful, addictive drug that is slowly turning its users into zombies/ghouls/wights under his control. |
| Zeful05-26-05, 09:54 AM | Watched "Lost", eh? -Windquake Huu? didn't see that part 34.) Pc's go into a dugeon to find the treasure don't find and on their way out they trigger a trap that leads them to a room with no way out, but at least the treasures there. BTW: got small tought from national treasure so don't ask. I am the tread killer. |
| Mirikon05-26-05, 11:01 AM | For mine, I think i'll focus on 'crossover' plot twists. Just because i can. :schemes: 35) Insane wizard is researching an 'improved' version of the Gate spell. Accidentally invites the Borg into Eberron. 36) Players fail (badly) on the roll to get an Amulet of the Planes to take them where they want. When their vision clears, they find a bald man in a floating wheelchair and a man with a ruby quartz visor looking at them like they're from outer space. The party just landed in Professor X's office. Now, how do they get back? 37) The BBEG is an insane wizard. He casts a summoning spell, and the players have to face four anthropomorphic turtles with levels in the Ninja base class. 38) The BBEG casts a spell which sends the PCs into another world, where they never existed. Works best on an epic group who are very famous, and have completely changed their world, or on a group that's just starting out. Perhaps the BBEG in the other world calls one of them the Chrono Trigger. 39) Another bad roll on the Amulet of the Planes. The party is transported to an alternate material plane. They must help Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe fight against a mage who would cause untold devastation to the world. (A cookie to anyone who gets this one.) 40) One of your players has been clammoring for a D20 Future campaign. So the party stumbles into a 'temporal wild magic zone'. They get thrown into the far future of their world. Of course, the BBEG who was present in their own time never got stopped (the PCs weren't there, afterall) so they have to find a way to get back in time, and stop the BBEG. Along the way, they meet with a Samurai named Jack, who is trying to accomplish the same thing. 41) The magical energies unleashed in the party's (failed) attempt to take down the BBEG have caused fluctuations throughout the planes. This is expressed physically when an oddly painted van drives through one of these fluctuations, and ends up next to the PCs. Inside the van are two men, two women, and a dog. 42) One of the PCs friends shows up, and tells the party that he's actually an alien. The players have to hitch a ride with a ship heading to a new world, because this one is set to be demolished. Works especially well if you are changing DMs, and the old DM used a campaign setting you're not fond of. |
| mrshupizdumaterinu05-26-05, 11:33 AM | Hi Kids, 1 - ... I thought you meant cool plot-twists? |
| Vicki Cadae05-26-05, 11:42 AM | 43) Ninjas attack. Often. (Or monks dressed like ninjas). Investigation reveals that there are gangs of secretive ninjas all around the world (and in a few other planes, too), all of whom do nothing excapt train until they learn the location of the PCs, at which point they seek out and attack them. Even further investigation reveals that the ninjas are acting under orders from their master who believes the PCs to be the Chosen Ones and is testing them. |
| LCD2YOU05-26-05, 11:44 AM | For mine, I think i'll focus on 'crossover' plot twists. Just because i can. :schemes: (Snip) 39) Another bad roll on the Amulet of the Planes. The party is transported to an alternate material plane. They must help Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe fight against a mage who would cause untold devastation to the world. (A cookie to anyone who gets this one.) (Snip) Chronicles of Narnia? Never read the book, nor do I care to read anything by CS Lewis. |
| windquake05-29-05, 12:50 AM | Huu? didn't see that part ***Lost spoilers...though from about 2 months ago*** On Lost, Sawyer's parents were conned by this guy, and they lost everything because of it. Sawyer's father killed his mother, then killed himself, leaving Sawyer an orphan. He always wanted to find the guy who did that to him. Sawyer's longtime con partner showed up and told him that he found the guy, showing Sawyer photos and told him where he was. Sawyer found the guy and shot him...as the guy was dying, he said that he was going to pay him (meaning the friend). Sawyer then realized that his friend just used him to kill a guy that owed him money and it wasn't the con man that destroyed his family. -Windquake |
| obrysii05-29-05, 10:44 AM | 44. The BBEG is not evil, after all. In fact, the logic he uses makes him Lawful Good. He sees the world as full of corruption, and the only way to truely bring about peace and good is to wipe it out and start with a clean slate. |
| misi05-29-05, 10:53 AM | 45. The king's daughter has run away, but in reality she has been kidnapped by some medusas, turned to stone and returned to the king as a statue. The first days after the kidnapping, a shapechanger takes her place, before he runs away. |
| lord warrior05-29-05, 11:21 AM | I thought you meant cool plot-twists? You want to say these are not cool |
| twad05-29-05, 04:40 PM | 46- The king daughter have been kidnaped by a monster, PCs must find her, once they do they discover that she ran away by herself because she is in love with said monster wich is not evil after all. what to do about it? |
| Mirikon05-29-05, 06:45 PM | Chronicles of Narnia? Never read the book, nor do I care to read anything by CS Lewis. Nope. Actually isn't from a book. |
| DeathMagus05-29-05, 07:05 PM | I like to do this one, only make him dominated by some high level illithid or some-such. Then the same happens to his sucessor. Making the hunt for them (The PC's) even more exciting. Actually, that's the very basis (illithid and all) for the prefab "Speaker in Dreams" for fifth level characters. Though the prefab's story expects characters to save the leader, not kill him, since this occurs at the end of the adventure it is possible to change the goal to your liking. Check it out! |
| MasterRookie05-29-05, 08:13 PM | 47. The party is tranported to a parallel plane ruled by and evil quasi diety only to find that the leader of a resistance group against him is their wizard friend who got transported their after using retributive strike to save them many years ago. |
| The Shaman05-29-05, 09:20 PM | 48. ...and they wake up and discover it was all just a dream. :P The REAL 48. After untold battles in lonely fells, dank caverns, and musty dungeons, the intrepid adventurers face the evil high priest and his blackguard minion and defeat them in a battle that lays waste to the unholy temple. As they stand, bloodied and weary, amid the smoldering wreckage over the bodies of their fallen foes, a booming voice from the heavens announces, "Checkmate"... ;) |
| captainswift05-29-05, 09:54 PM | 49. A town ravaged by filth fever is seemingly liberated when the party runs out the small band of wererats that have been living on the edge of town. The wererats were just ruffians, however, and not responsible for the plague. Turns out the local cattle farmer had bought his herd from a traveling sorcerer, and his cows are actually polymorphed otyughs... |
| Rabid Dire Wolverine05-29-05, 10:06 PM | 50. The leader of an evil mage guild that the party was sent to destroy makes a called shot to a human or half-elf in the partys hand, cutting it off, and he says "(character's name)... I am your father!" |
| Mirikon05-29-05, 10:13 PM | 47. The party is tranported to a parallel plane ruled by and evil quasi diety only to find that the leader of a resistance group against him is their wizard friend who got transported their after using retributive strike to save them many years ago. 51. The party is transported to a parallel plane ruled by an evil quasi diety, only to find that the leader of a resistance group against him is their wizard friend who got transported there after using retributive strike to save them several years in the future. 52. The wizard (from this time) is still in the party. 53. The evil quasi diety is also the wizard friend, from even FURTHER in the future. |
| Ormiss06-16-05, 03:49 PM | Chris, Geddoe and Hugo are the main characters of the video game Suikoden III. 54. When the wicked king's regime is finally toppled and his dastardly summoners and necromancers are put to the sword, it turns out that the king was using the gold and human sacrifices to keep an invasion of Githyanki from occurring. When the "gifts" stop appearing in the astral plane, the entire region is subsequently enslaved by the forces of the Lich-Queen. |
| Bruunwald06-16-05, 04:00 PM | 55. The party is shifted to a parallel plane where names, places and people are similar but grotesque. In order to get back they are directed to the "double" of a trusted and very powerful crone from their own world. When they find her, they discover that the more extreme someone is in their own world, the more extreme the opposite is in this world, and they learn it the hard way: that trusted old crone's double is a huge famished spirit. |
| Josheva06-16-05, 04:05 PM | 31 is my favourite :D |
| Ekranoplan06-16-05, 04:14 PM | 56- The PC's flight leaves in 30 minutes!!!! |
| Archus Forix06-16-05, 04:39 PM | 57. When the PCs think they are going after the BBEG, it is like a mirror of themselves, and all they are attacking is their inner fears. Thus, it makes a good ending when (or if) they confront the fears, defeat the sort-of BBEG and the mirror is broken (metaphysical) |
| Sinaz06-16-05, 04:48 PM | when do we get to the cool plot twists? :P |
| GuardianAngel06-17-05, 10:38 AM | 61- Ok well this takes in that thier is an item (Potion of Fireball) Basicly the same as Acid Flasks but with fire instead and greater Damage, Now thier are goblins in a town of gnomes who arent evil, they have learned to accept it and live with the gnomes, but all of a sudden goblins start to blow up buildings, and the PC's need to track it down and find out who is ordering the goblins to do this, when they do its actual one of the Gnome Guardsman, His reasoning is why would Gnomes let Goblins live with them, so he wants to destroy the Gnomes that allow it so he can restart the village somewhere else, FYI he would be lawful-neutral, He follows the old rules now this new era. 62- The PC's are on a path and see smoke in the distance, upon reaching the smoke they see smashed wagons' the tracks lead away at a nice speed, when the PC's do clear out what has taken the wagons and the people, the people are all kids and women with no leadership and look to the PC's for help. |
