A barbarian in a locksmith shop. [Archive] - Wizards Community

The situation:

I'm running my group through the Shackled City adventure path from Dungeon magazine. The party has agreed to help a gnomish locksmith retrieve his kidnapped familiar and the party enters his shop with the knowledge that an invisible "watcher" is hiding in the gnome's shop. The barbarian (because he is not being suitably rewarded for his efforts) purposely trashes the shop in the course of the fight out of spite.

In the meanwhile, the party is being employed by the local church (a LN church to which the party's cleric belongs) to search for missing orphans.

What I intend to do:

The gnome (also LN) still needs the party's aid, so he is maintaining silence about the barbarian's actions so far. Once his familiar is safe, the gnome will go to the church and petition them to extract the damages to his shop from the barbarian's reward. The church will also refuse to aid the barbarian (heal wounds, cure disease, etc.) until he pays up (and then some) AND performs some kind of community service (such as an adventure side-trek).

My question:
What would you do as DM? I'm just curious.

That sounds great actually, character actions should have repercussions. By all means if the Bar is that greedy and childish then have the gnome stick it to him.

Sounds fair. Just don't rip him off for the sake of ripping him off. A trashed shop, by adventurers treasure standards, shouldn't be incredibly expensive. Maybe a thousand or so GPs.

Is the barbarian ****** in character, or does the player believe he's being screwed?

That's the first thing I would find out as a DM. If it turns out the player is just roleplaying, I would resolve the issue in character. Perhaps by having the Gnome confront the barbarian, or by using the town's militia to extract compensation from the party (pay up or it's a week in the brig for you.)

I'm curious, how does the gnome tie in to the cleric's church? is he a member?

The character felt that he should be properly rewarded for his services and didn't want to help the gnome for free room and board at a local tavern (plus the compensation that the local church was paying him for the related task of finding kidnapped orphans). The gnome is a member of the local church and has friends in the local merchant guild who could make things unpleasant for the party.

This happened in one of my campaigns! Well, it was something very familiar, but the end result was the same. The store of their employer was trashed be an employee. At the very end of the adventure, the group showed up at the shop, and the employer was standing there, with armed guards, and the town magistrate. There were also several witnesses. He handed the group a copy of their contract, which listed the spcified payment they earned. He then read off a list of damages. He paid the group, but he had deducted the damages from the group's payment. When they protested, the magistrate said it was legal. If they insisted, they could receive full payment, but they would then be arrested and held over for trial. The group accepted the cut in pay, and then took it out of the trasher's share!

ciao,
john.

extract compensation from the party

EXACTLY.

Make sure to punish the whole group for the Barbarian's actions.

There is no better motivation for cleaning up one's own actions that having EVERYONE in your group beating you in to submission everytime you take it upon yourself to act like a fool. After all, scribing scrolls and making potions are expensive (for your party's arcane/divine casters), and so is getting important buffing materials (for most everyone else in the group).

Make sure to NOT skimp on XP earned.

But lay in to them for any reward.

If you do just punish the Barbarian's share - make sure to publicly humiliate and disgrace his reputation (if warranted - as I have no knowledge of this locale I don't know what the community's attitude/relationship is with the shop owner).

Keep in mind though, even in real life estimates on damage, plus pain/suffering/humilation spiral out of control.

Recently, that 20+ million dollar lawsuit against 50 cent and his posse cause some paperazzi got slugged by a bodyguard :)

Hmmm...

Pay gnome huge amount of money for shop...

Hire assassin for a fraction of that cost to silence gnome and his family permenantly...

Tough choice :D
