I am not that new to the game (been a Player for almost 3 years) but I have basically played with the same group of people and same DM so Im not exactly familiar with all the "technical" rules, as they had several big changing house rules. I recently became a DM for a new group so I started browsing through this forum for advice, tips, and whatnot. Throughout the forum I came upon many many people saying metagaming is bad. And I was just wondering, what exactly is metagaming? All I have gathered so far from the offhand comments is that it makes it too easy and its bad...

Simplest definition would be: using out-of-game knowledge for in-game benefit.

Example: A player finds your notes, reads well ahead in the adventure plans, and starts making item purchases and taking feats/skills that make no sense for the character but will allow him to steamroll what he knows is coming.

Example: You have zombies, skeletons and vermin (all mindless creatures) using the tactics of Sun Tzu on the battlefield to defeat your players' characters, avoid attacks of opportunity, not walk into obvious traps, etc.
