this really belongs in the modern forms, but since this place gets a) more traffic and b) excellent posters.... most of the time, I thought I'd share this idea with you guys. for all unfamiliar with the d20 modern rules, they are in the SRD somewhere.

all the PCs are actors and film directors. starts, say, level 3. characters must have ranks in profession actor and profession direct. one player is desginated the DM. since all players technically take a turn at DMing, the term is ambigous, the the player designated DM is the DM in only in "out of film" events.

essentially, the PCs belong to an acting guild of sorts in their Real life. all are talented actors and film producers. to keep their job, they need to produce two movies a year, one of which needs to be good.

The guild the PCs are in specializes in freelance movies... >_>

So when the time comes to determine what the movie will be, one player is chosen to "direct" the new movie. the other players make characters according to the guidelines set by the DM. the DM might choose to make an espionage movie, for example, in which case, he might decide on having the players create "level 7" characters with d20 modern rules - of course, the character sheet is not really ingame.... this is the most confusing part, I'll try to clarify it later. or he might decide to make a war movie, and let the PCs create a level 5 martial class. or maybe a ripoff of LoTR, and whatever you want! the world is to the DMs choosing.

For this, I'm going to use this example- the PCs are all stuck on a train with lots of snakes. they are permitted to make level 3 d20 modern characters.

Action points are replaced with Special effect points. whenever a special effect point is used, the player must describe how it looks on the big screen (for example, a sniper shoots a snake attacking a dog from the back of the train. for the sequence, the shot zooms into the snipers eye, follows the bullet being shot and as it goes into the snakes head.)

Simple rules make it impossible for a level 3 character to play a level 20 one - simply that sometimes you jsut don't have enough money for special effects. the level of the acting guild is equal to the average of the members level +4. this number is the highest level a character can act. an example of how this has relavance is take a look at the LoTR sequence in which Aaragorn and Gimli jump onto the bridge at helms deep. during the filming, they used special equipment to make the jump, but it is still possible for someone to actually make a jump like that on their own skill once again, this is confusing, but... merh.

The last rule is that downtime need not be roleplayed... unless it has relavance. for example, you don't need to roleplay going to the forge and making a weapon you said you were going to make, or haggling with a merchant. essentially, the DM says certain things are done, certain things are roleplayed at the DMs whim, ect.

Finally... grading a movie... thats what I'm working on.... I'll post later

questions? comments? anything is appreciated
