Okay, this is a challange to all DMs, and it will help me out imensly in the process :D

I have a very vague idea about a game I wish to create. I got inspired while playing Kingdom Hearts for the PS2. Basically I want to go in a similar direction.

- Isolated characters pulled into a new world/worlds
- Sinister forces
- Cameos by famous characters ;)

Problem is, how do I do this without copying Kingdom Hearts? Thats the challange I present to you. To come up with a semi-light hearted game like Kingdom Hearts.

Now I only have access to the following books, so if possible could we only use those books?

PHB
DMG
MM
Savage Species
Psionics Handbook
Draconomicon
Oriental Adventures
Arms and Equipment Guide
Miniatures Handbook
Defenders of the Faith

Much thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Cameos by famous characters

That's your real problem, what famous characters to use? If you use Disney characters it's probably going to come of as horribly cheesy, but if you use characters from other sources (movies, fantasy novels, etc.) you're not going to have "Disney" as the unifying theme that binds everything together. That's what Kindgom Hearts had going for it: the fact that Disney has so many recognizable characters from such a variety of sources. A lot of the fun was seeing all those characters in different setting and different situations. It didn't hurt that the game was visually gorgeous and there weren't any of the crappy Disney musical numbers that ruin practically every one of their movies. ;)

Pick a theme that has numerous characters that you can use for cameos.

Might I suggest pulling characters from the worlds of Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Dark Sun? Plus any major participants (PC and NPC) from past campaigns that you have either run or have participated in with the majority of your players.

Because cameos are only fun if the majority of the players recognize them.
