| Williampoulin02-14-07, 12:12 PM | Ok so the story is these rogues attempt to murder someone in the night, but hopefully someone will hear something ;) and I'm planning on having the party follow, or chase (depending on what they decide to do) the rogues back to their Head Quarters. How do I run a chase, or how often would I roll Spot/Hide/Listen/Move Silently checks to see if the rogues see or hear the party? I apreciate your help! Thank you, William |

Thank you, William Edit: the distance between the tavern and the HQ is ~1320 feet. If that helps? Thank you again! Sorry for the double post. |

Set up a situation, and anticipate likely courses of action, but never assume the party will do what you want them too. What if the party just starts shooting arrows at the rogues? What if the mage has a web spell prepared? What if they just shout for the town guard at the top of their lungs. What if they ignore the rogues and start looting the house that was attacked? As to your general question about spot checks during a long chase, here's what I would do: Allow the pursued party one set of passive spot checks for free. After that, they only get checks if they spend a move action to actively spot for pursuit. So if the rogues want to just run, they don't get checks, but if they want to move at half speed and keep an eye out behind them, they get a spot each round. If the rogues are actively moving stealthily to avoid pursuit, use the rules for movement while hiding, listed in the SRD: -5 to hide to move at full speed. Also, remember once the rogues are spotted, they need to make a distraction or get out of line of sight before they can attempt to hide again. If you want to run the chase round by round, make checks each round. If you just want a quick way to see if the rogues get away or not, make one set of opposed rolls: a spot for each party member vs one hide roll for the group of rogues. Add some circumstance bonuses if the party takes any actions to help or hinder themselves. Also, if a party member has track, they might be able to follow even if they lose sight of the rogues. |

But thank you for the ideas for the chase. I will go for it as said "If you just want a quick way to see if the rogues get away or not, make one set of opposed rolls: a spot for each party member vs one hide roll for the group of rogues. Add some circumstance bonuses if the party takes any actions to help or hinder themselves." Thank you. William |
