I was playing a game the other night when an interesting scenario came up...

It seems that the party was on the brink of being defeated. Unfortunately I had placed them into this position. (it's time for them to retire) Well.. to go out with a bang, I decided that they were trying to stop a gate from letting in a bunch of deamons. BIG deamons.

After a long battle, and the gate not being able to be closed by conventional means, one of the players (the rogue) got an "Interesting" Idea

The players long ago devised a way to keep their treasure with them at all times by putting one of a set of ring gates that they obtained inside of their Darrean's instant fortress. This allowed them to throw whatever gold and jewels and stuff they wanted into the tower and sort it out later.. Since the description of the tower states that it just shrinks dow.. I allowed this (way back when) It was a novel idea.. Well.. the rogue goes up to the gate.. says good bye to the party, and throws the fortress through the players side of the ring gate.. I was at a loss for words.. Not once did it come to mind that this lovely paradox might happen untill the other day..

I haven't decided on what should happen yet (we all decided to stop there for the night so I could look up some rules, and gather my thoughts)

But now I turn to you guys.. I've expended my resources, and the only thing I can come up with is a Ginormous explosion that would take out the gate, the rogue, the party, and the surrounding landscape.. Including a town.

Your thoughts please?

The fortress can't be shrunk down until it is completely empty. So it really should never have happened. I wouldn't allow a Ring Gate to function while shrunken anyways. But since you did, an implosion killing all of your PCs is always fun.

And the big KABOOM is going to fit if you want to retire them. You might do a sequel to this campaign as all of the partymembers definitly end up in heaven :ghosted: (or the positive afterlife anyway). If you give them the ghosttemplate or whatever, you might send them to the abyss, to check on the demons.

Or you could just say to your party that there will be a lot of songs about them and that they now may start with rolling up a new character.

Well, typically it creates a rip in the fabric of space and begins sucking things into the astral plane with both items being destroyed. I doubt there is an reason for an explosion to happen but it could begin sucking everything through and you could claim it also sucks the gate through (if the gate is already opened). Thus the demon gate ends up floating in the void of the astral plane (not much use there) and there ends up being a crater where part of the ground was also sucked through.

If this happens, you could have some magical implosion. The magic waves kill in a radius you can set as DM. Since the heroes were so heroic you can get some other adventurers bring them back to life. Or some good god will save them.

If the Players wanted to retire, then it's a good ending. The PC's saved the world from the demons. Maybe make your next campaign in the same world and let some bards sing about the heroic ending of ... ;-) Players like to be heroes in the end.

defintly at least a rip in the base plane, possibly creatign a very short lived singleraity in the astral plane..(all that mass has to go somewere, a large mass in an infinitly small instant fortresss, been pushed through a hole in space into its self could be a start)

And since you now have one end of a ring gate that leads into the heart of a singularity, it suggests the the entire region is goign to suffer a violent implosion as it all rushs through one ring gate into the astral plane before the singualrity loses stability and expands in a explosion of gamma radaition.

Not necessarily...I always viewed the fabric of the planes as rather robust. Yes, it would rip a hole but it would last for a brief time before it repaired itself. Hence why it'd suck a bunch through and then vanish.

Well, it's definitely a cliff-hanger ending, huh? I think it was a good idea and it did the trick. The gate is now fine particles of planar dust and the PCs have done their duty and defended the realm. They should definitely get a few last words, just to wrap up their characters. Something memorable each one can say.

During the next campaign, the new characters enter this area and hear faint echoes. Memories of the previous characters' last words. They'll feel the power of the amount of destructive force which took out the demon summoning gate. They might even see flickering remnants of the old characters. Not interactive though ... sort of ... 3d shadows, imprinted on the plane. A 3d memorial to the brave souls who gave their lives.

As an added bonus, the fortress spit up a few items which had been housed in it but they are mere shells of their former glory. Perhaps a high-level mage who lives on the other side of the continent might be able to restore these items? I definitely do like the ending. :)

That's pretty much the best Ending to a DND line I've ever heard!

I'd say It's kinda wrong, but since the DM *you* made it legal for them to use it as such, Then they got one over you. *still it's your call. DM IS GOD!!!* Happy ending!! Fin

:bounce:

...and yet?...

Now that the original quest is over, A retrospect quest would be fun for your party members *as Undrhil stated* I really think that would be an awesome idea.

It sounds like a nice way to end the story. A massive explosion, I prefer those over implosions. And I'm talking massive, a glass crater five miles wide or so. A noble end of self-sacrifice and fireworks. A bard cohort of course miraculously survives and tells the world the story as icing on the cake.

And then when and if the campaignn continues you have an excellent location for a plot hook. The portal left a rip in reality. (And cybermen are coming through! J/K) or it leaves some kind of taint on the land. (color out of space)

I'm stealing this and making it the reason for the day of mourmimg in my eberron campaign. Could I have the name and class of the characters, please, to give them fair credit.

Sweet ending. If your players accept you could make what happened a mystery allowing you to bring back the heroes some day as the new party trys to unlock what actually happened. This would allow you to bust out some kind of epic scenario with there beloved characters lost in some freakish plane. Just a thought many player would not accept such an unfinished cliff hanger.

Well, after going to work, and doing alot of hard thinking, I've decided on using the rip is space with the echo of the characters being left behind.

I know that the players wont have a problem with it, but I wanted something that wasn't going to take out the neighboring town.

So.. later more characters can come to the spot (now infested with all sorts of astral and ethereal monsters) and try to figure out what happened and why, and how to get rid of the problem. (Maybe add in that the area affected is slowly expanding due to a pin sized rupture in the planes?) This will add some back story to the new characters as well. (evil shadows and things popping up in the surrounding country side. Local heroes take off to investigate)

As for telling the characters.. I've decided that I wont tell them what happened. Just that their existance ended. Then later as new characters, they can find out what happened to their old characters and WHY.

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas, and the help on this one.. I think it will come out in a lot better form this way, than the typical "Boom your all dead."

As for the characters involved...

Deagol Roac - Human Rogue
Flamescale - Red Dragon Monk (Using the red dragon class from Dragon magazine)
Justice Tyla - Human Cleric
Antius - Human Mage (Force missile Mage)
Mandora the Reaver - Dwarf Fighter

If you do use the idea, please give credit to those who fell there.. it was a GREAT group, and a great setup. I actually cant think of a better way to end this campaign now that this has happened.

Once again, thank you all for the wonderfull ideas.

I agree wholeheartedly. I say use my suggestion: tell the PCs that the ring gate starts to make a loud whining sound. They each can come up with one line to keep forever echoed in this area. Then, they all die.

Later, the new characters can make the journey to this area to find out what happened to the fallen heroes and they can hear their echoing, last words. Also, the 3d shadows would be a cool touch as well, especially if the new characters acquire a fortress similar to the one destroyed here, because you could have those 3d shadows appear in the new fortress as well ...

And, if you are playing in Forgotten Realms, this area could become a new Wild Magic or No Magic zone. Your call on that one. :)

Come on! Give us the gorey details. :)
