I haven't ha much time to think about this, so I'm not sure on all the details. In fact, barely any. The group'll be irst level, thats for sure.

They would all be in a town for whatever reason suits there characters, and somehow they would learn that someone activated five stones. Each stone would be inside one of five temples/crypts/holes each one guarded by something different, yet equally fun to do/beat.
Was thinking of something like undead in one, an perhaps a riddle in another.
I want the group to have a choice on the order they deal with each stone, and I want it to be possible for them to fail. They'd only need to deactivate three of the five stones, so as not to make it to hard. The consequence of failinng to deactivating at least three of the stones would trigger them to unleash there energy which would create a flame across the ground to each stone, forming an inverted pentagram. The pentagram would incinirate the town, which would become a sacrifice to something.

Was kinda vague a certain points because I'm still unsure of what to do t accompish this. Anyway, I posted this here for possible ideas for what could be guarding the stones, and opinions of what you think of the concept in general.

EDIT:-------------------------------------
The Story So Far...
The town of Agahn has been cut off rom all trade routes, and other towns for the las month due to a bandi camp. The Bandits have been forcing the people of Agahn to pay for all supply deliveries, so everyone is getting less food, and are living in fear. Recently however the Bandits have stopped making demands. Either the group will have to ivestigate this, or it's aready been done. Either way, the Bandit camp was the the scene of a saughter. Every Bandit dead, some through sick ritualistic ways, and some just cut down. Now there have been reports of hooded individuals.
The group will (hopefully) look for these guys, and come across one of them and question him, he will break easily an tell them about the temples an what they do.
If they succeed, the town, an all there friends/family will be safe, and the hooded figures wont appear for a few sessions.
If they fail, the entire town gets wiped out. If they check out the damage in town, they'll see five hooded figures in the centre of town, with one picking up a baby from very scorched ground. One will remove his hood, and to battle with the players while the others escape. The one they challenge would be the guy they questioned earlier, an will confirm who was playing them by acting scared, and quickly knock them out with with a Sonicball(Fireball, but with the Energy Subsiution: Sonic feat). I know it's generally bad to have them encounter an opponen who's to high level like that, but it fits to perfectly into the plot. I woul like some reviews of the plot so far, please.

Thanks.

Hmmm, this sound like a devil plot, so lets go with a bunch of devils to gaurd, and since this is fire lets call it Mephistopheles since he is the lord of Hellfire and all. Have fun with this, its a great idea. As for what happens if they fail, just have some big bad devil come through, something that they will just have to hide from. Or you could have them be blamed by various churchs for the disaster.:D

I was thinking about using devils, but I don't think I'll have them guarding any to the stones. Keep the players guessing until that last minute. I was thinking of having something to do with Asmodeous because I think his holy symbol,(or at least the one on his mace) is an inverted pentagram.

Yeah, you need to give them a reason to want to do this, other than money.

Make it such that something bad happens to someone some thing that at least one or more of the party members care about in game.

otherwise they can do one or two stones, and walk off, bored.

Good luck.

Oh, and make it three stones, otherwise, it's too long and involved, unless you make each temple very distinct, and very interesting, with descriptions, etc.

I think you need to develop an overarching theme that ties the whole idea together. For example, the stones could each be in an elemental temple. Each stone could be one element and the fifth would be a higher element with which the PCs have not yet had an encounter.

Or it could be Mila Jovovich, that always works too.

The point is you need a reason why the PCs are going around deactivating stones other than the fact that you want them to. You don't need an elaborate back story, just enough to make it possible. You might want to give one or more of the PCs a personal hook into the adventure. Such as the threatened village is one of the PCs hometown or the wizard in the group has been offered a rare secret to unveil the sinister forces behind the plot.

Any time you can use the PCs back story, made by the players, in a game session you will likely see a sharp rise in enthusiasm.

I'm thinking of making the town the players hometown. Although if they rather be passers by, then they have at least been there a few weeks. A bandit camps has blocking off all roads forcing the town to pay for any supplies delivered.

Would Devils, and Demons be a good over arching theme? I'd like to avoi having any of them guarding the temples/crypts because they belong to neither. I'll put the story I have so far in the first post. I think I'll have them write backstorys for there haracters first, and tell them to create a few NPCs that fits in with there character. That way, I think they will feel the need to defend their own personal NPCs. So, even if they choose not to live in this town, they hopefully will have something they want to protect.
I'm still not sure on what to have guarding some of the stones though.
I initially thought something for each role in each temple would be good, but now I'm not so sure. Having a test that would use the move silently skill, or lock pick would be ba if noone wanted to be a Rogue.
