| Onikani09-20-07, 11:08 AM | Two quick questions on special materials, specifically adamantine and cold iron: *** According to the SRD an adamantine weapon costs +3000., (which includes masterwork). And large weapons cost 2x as much to make. So does a large adamantine weapon cost +6000? *** Iron, Cold This iron, mined deep underground, known for its effectiveness against fey creatures, is forged at a lower temperature to preserve its delicate properties. Weapons made of cold iron cost twice as much to make as their normal counterparts. Also, any magical enhancements cost an additional 2,000 gp. Ok so in this case i want a medium cold iron sword +1. I pay the 2x price of the sword, 1x the masterwork component, and then 2k for the enchantment, and another 2k for the cold iron 'tax'. No worries. So a few months go by, and i wanna make that same sword +2. Normally i can just pay the 6k for the upgrade (the cost difference from +1 and +2), but do i have to pay that 'tax' again? If so, could i only pay it once by making it go from masterwork to +2 in one shot? Also, what about if i want to add other special properties like holy? *** One more question while i'm at it: The DMG states (somewhere) that most magic items resize to their user. Does this include weapons and armor? and is there a limit to the size increase? If a pixy creates and weilds the "Weapon of Awesomeness", can a Colossual mob pick it up and have it resize all the way up? If so it becomes cheaper to make your magic weapons small or smaller and have them resize themselves to fit the user, especially if that adamantine cost does scale with weapon size... *** Also, i do own the MIC, but its home and i'm at work, so if any of this has been clarified in there, feel free simply point me to a page and i'll look it up when i get home. Thanks a bunch, -oni |

You pay 2,000 gp each time you enhance it. Although you can add multiple enhancements at one time. Masterwork --> +1 = 2,000 gp six months later: +1 --> +2 = 2,000 gp a year later: +2 -- +3 Holy = 2,000 gp Note that even if you pay 6,000 gp extra to enhance the sword the market value increases only by 2,000 as you could have (should have?) added them all at once. |

| Matthew7709-20-07, 01:46 PM | According to the SRD an adamantine weapon costs +3000., (which includes masterwork). And large weapons cost 2x as much to make. So does a large adamantine weapon cost +6000? IMO, Yes. It takes twice as much raw materials, and twice as much forging time, so the extra cost for adamatine is doubled. Actually, if you view the 3000 gp as just being the cost of the raw materials, then logically it should be x8 for a large weapon (twice as long, twice as thick, twice as wide), but since I view part of the +3000 cost as being the difficulty of working the material, x2 works for me. The DMG states (somewhere) that most magic items resize to their user. Does this include weapons and armor? and is there a limit to the size increase? If a pixy creates and weilds the "Weapon of Awesomeness", can a Colossual mob pick it up and have it resize all the way up? the SRD says this: Size And Magic Items When an article of magic clothing or jewelry is discovered, most of the time size shouldn’t be an issue. Many magic garments are made to be easily adjustable, or they adjust themselves magically to the wearer. Size should not keep characters of various kinds from using magic items. There may be rare exceptions, especially with racial specific items. Armor and Weapon Sizes Armor and weapons that are found at random have a 30% chance of being Small (01-30), a 60% chance of being Medium (31-90), and a 10% chance of being any other size (91-100). This is a little ambigious. Personally, I allow all magic items other than weapons and armor to resize themselves. Weapons and Armor I do not. Partially for the reason you just stated, and also because if people have feats that allow them to use oversized weapons, how does the weapon know what size the wielder wants it to be? If I'm medium and I want to use a +1 large greatsword, and every magical greatsword I picked up turned into a medium sized one, I'd be rather annoyed. Also, rings and belts shrinking and lengthening seems less obtrusive to me than a suit of plate mail going from 4' high to 12' high. |
| Onikani09-20-07, 02:03 PM | IMO, Yes. It takes twice as much raw materials, and twice as much forging time, so the extra cost for adamatine is doubled. <snip> That's what i thought too. At least we agree. :) When an article of magic clothing or jewelry is discovered, most of the time size shouldn’t be an issue. Many magic garments are made to be easily adjustable, or they adjust themselves magically to the wearer. Size should not keep characters of various kinds from using magic items. So the SRD specifically states that clothes and jewelry resize. Essentially that runs the gamut of wondrous items (gloves, belts, hats, necklaces, brooches, etc) and rings. Ok easy enough. Then it says that weapons and armor are found to have a given size already, which implies that they do not readily change size. Add to it what you said about feats (i never even thought of those), and it seems to clinch it. Overall it is be ambiguous, but i think this is a case of thinking through the RAI, rather than trying to figure out the RAW. Works for me. Thanks for looking it up. Guess that about sums it all up for my questiosn... thanks to everyone who helped out! :D EDIT - MIC page 26 has racially different values for Cold iron. Wow, i thought it was expensive in the SRD... |

So does a large adamantine weapon cost +6000?A little more delving in the FAQ (p. 45) found an answer for this one as well. The cost of masterwork is subsumed in the +3,000 gp cost, since you don't double that part of cost, a large adamantine weapon would be +5,700 gp. Of course the example given in the FAQ doesn't work out (the mithral barding in question isn't masterwork). Don't look at me, I didn't write the FAQ. :waits: |
