A few questions... [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-02-06, 02:20 PM 1) Should I buy Unearthed Arcana? I want to make my only player(my brother,who is 10) like the game better and start a little roleplaying. So is there anything there is in UA to enchance my game? Or should I buy another book? Name it please..
2) Is there a boxed adventure for either FR or DD which is suitable for two chars. one a NPC and another PC? I want them start from 1st level to enjoy the game but I can raise their levels. (By the way my brother wants to be a ninja and the NPC will be a cleric for healing)

01-02-06, 02:50 PM As to your first question, Unearthed Arcana is geared toward advanced players. You sound to me like you're pretty new, so I do not recommend Unearthed Arcana for you.

As to your second question, there are several adventures available in the downloads section of this very website that, with some minor adjustments, would be suitable for your party.

01-02-06, 05:04 PM I'd second what kallisti23 wrote. Unearthed Arcana is full of alternate and variant rules; deciding which of these (if any) are going to work for your campaign requires you to be familiar with the pros and cons of the original rules that are being replaced.

The UA might even hurt your game if you're running, since it sounds like your problem (keeping your little brother interested) is something you get better at through practice, not by adding new rules. Every DM on these boards sucked when he or she started (some of us flatter ourselves that we've gotten better, but...). Keep running adventures, and talk to your bro about what kinds of things would make the game more fun for him.

Save the money for books until you've played a little longer and know exactly what you need. A book can be as valuable to one DM as it's worthless to another--for example, if your campaign uses psionics you need The Expanded Psionics Handbook and if you don't use psionics, well, you obviously don't need the book. The same thought process applies to every other non-core book: do you know what you will use it for?

I like the Sunken Citadel officiel adventure, iv DMed it a couple of times, it has decent traps and decent hardness.
