A few quick questions about Temp HP and Stacking [Archive] - Wizards Community

Three quick questions.

1). Do temporary hit points stack from multiple castings of the same spell? e.g.
- Start with 20 HP.
- Cast Vampiric Touch, gain 10 temporary hit points. 30 hit points.
- Get hit for 5 damage. 25 hit points.
- Cast Vampiric Touch again, gain 15 temporary hit points. 40 hit points.

Or would these castings not stack (i.e. end with 35 hit points as the second casting replaces the first).

2). Do temporary hit points from different sources stack? e.g.
- Cast False Life, gain 10 HP.
- Cast Vampiric Touch, gain 15 more for a total of 25?

Or would you only get the better of the two?

3). Do temporary hit points gained from an Energy Drain attack stack? e.g. Does a Vampire gain 5 Temp HP for the first, and 5 more for a second totaling 10? Or would the second hit just override the first one?

1. No. Effects from the same spell being cast multiple times overlap, they do not stack.
From the SRD:
"Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area or on the same target, but at different strengths, only the best one applies."

You would have 35 HPs.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.
From the SRD:
"Unless otherwise specified in the creature’s description, a draining creature gains 5 temporary hit points (10 on a critical hit) for each negative level it bestows on an opponent."

First hit does 1 neg lvl, 5 hp. Second hit does 2 neg lvls, 10 more hp.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I'll have to break the news to my Dread Necromancer that his days of Vampiric Touching his HP well above that of the party fighter are over. ;)
