| Harokas07-30-07, 12:11 PM | One of my players wants to start a barbarian with the samurai (Complete Warrior) class features: Staredown, Mass staredown, Improved staredown, and Frightful presence. The concept is interesting, and of course, I want to make every attempt to let the player play the character she envisions. What class features of the barbarian should I trade-off for these alternate features? |
| Ace_of_Night07-30-07, 01:00 PM | It's a bit hard, as the staredown isn't that great, but frightful presence sure is. I'd go with either trap sense or uncanny dodge. |
| Onikani07-30-07, 01:07 PM | there is a feat in draconomicon that gives the pc frightful presence. I forget the prereq's and i am AFB, but maybe just let the barby work towards taking that feat... |
| Hapless07-30-07, 01:10 PM | If the staredown tree does what i think, then swap it for rage. |
| DarkflameX07-30-07, 01:17 PM | trap sense and maybe uncanny dodge. ( i think i got the right names) |
| Ace_of_Night07-30-07, 01:18 PM | Rage is one of the main things that define a barbarian.. If you take that out, it doesn't feel like a barbarian as much anymore. Besides, as I said above, the staredown tree isn't that great save for frightful presence. To correct my above post: Trading in both trap sense and uncanny dodge is more credible now I look at it again. |
| CeilingNinja07-30-07, 01:29 PM | Frightful Presence from the Draconomicon: FRIGHTFUL PRESENCE [GENERAL] Like a dragon, your mere presence can terrify those around you. Prerequisites: Cha 15, Intimidate 9 ranks. Benefit: You gain the use of the frightful presence ability. Whenever you attack or charge, all opponents within a radius of 30 feet who have fewer levels or Hit Dice than you become shaken for a number of rounds equal to 1d6 + your Cha modifier. The effect is negated by a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 your character level + your Cha modifier). A successful save indicates that the opponent is immune to your frightful presence for 24 hours. This ability can’t affect creatures with an Intelligence of 3 or lower, nor does it have any effect on dragons. |
| Onikani07-30-07, 01:36 PM | That's it, thank you. So he can take this at 6th level if he has a high enough cha, and enough skill ranks. Sounds fair to me. :) |
| Harokas07-30-07, 06:55 PM | Being that the true gem of the chain doesn't come-in until level 20, would it seem too over-powered to trade-out only one of the barbarians class features (either trap sense OR uncanny dodge/improved uncanny dodge)? |
| runestar07-30-07, 10:48 PM | PGTF has a regional feat which grants frightful presence (meaning it can be taken at 1st lv). :) |
