My group and I don't have much use for treasure in our games. The adventures we have are always pretty heroic and hauling home bags of loot always seems a bit un-heroic. They always end up giving it to NPCs to do civic things and there are only so many churches with broken down roofs.

Any way, this holds true with magic items too. Lugging around tons of potions, wands and the various utility items does not sit well with us as it's not what we image our heroes from liturature to have done. Sure, Thomas of Crydee (Magician) had his magic arms and amour but that was about it. It's a low magic campaign.

Does anyone know how the ECL of a character scales if you scale the treasure down to about 20% of the treasure she is 'supposed' to have at any level?

Given that all PCs in this style of the game would have equal lack of loot would this cause additional problems?

I highly suggest you take a look at Monte Cook's Iron Heroes variant PHB. http://www.montecook.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?iron-lore It is superb and seems to fit what you are looking for.

I suggest (if you have a copier/free laser printer capability) to buy the PDF and print it out as it is a good bit cheaper and see if you like it. Also, be sure to visit Monte's official forums for rules questions and there is a large Eratta document as well.

The book as printed is wonderful. After being out for about a year now they answered a LOT of questions and tweaked a lot of issues and not it is even better.

Try it out, it is VERY low magic/loot.

The main problem with you taking loot/items out of D&D is that the game is designed with loot/items in mind. Iron Heroes (while still d20, etc) does not. You'll be estatic to have masterwork weapons. It is a wonderful system.
