| bridgekat03-14-08, 03:25 PM | I have an NPC gnome who has developed a crush on one of the PCs (the only person ever to out talk him!). He runs the local knick-knack store. She's a wizard, with the nickname "Misfire" (an early attempt at casting lightning bolt gone horribly awry). He'd like to start showering her with odd gifts. (Ah, spring time, puppy love and gnomes. It's a scary sight.) Any suggestions for tokens of devotion? (or a source for oddities that might fit the bill?) |
| Zombie_Babies03-14-08, 03:39 PM | A Gnome? Well, he'd probably give her what he knows best.... pointy hats, wheelbarrows full of flowers and the like. And never pants. Gnomes hate pants. |
| bridgekat03-14-08, 04:57 PM | My first thought is a garishly wrapped package with an elaborate bow. Inside is an ornate wooden box which, when opened, spews red glitter and heart shapped confetti, while something akin to Feelings is played by animated miniture dwarves with wings. |
| toucanbuzz03-14-08, 05:23 PM | Gnomes generally like clever and witty things, and they make me think of the Jokey Smurf exploding boxes. Suppose in this situation that'd be out. Perhaps he could hire a low level apprentice to cast some Silent Images of (whatever he'd think impress her) and accompany it with Ventriloquism. A mildly animated wooden construct, perhaps a gnome doing the hula dance over and over. A snow globe of the city with an illusion of people playing in the flakes as they fall. A bracelet with 12 faux white gemstones etched with the gnomish names of the months, the current one highlighted in (favorite color of receiver). A nice bottle of wine that has a magic mouth when opened that details the vintage and a neat fact about the maker.  Heck, I might enhance my own game. After all, when the heroes save the town, aren't some folks smitten with them?? |
| Raumz03-14-08, 09:34 PM | One of my PCs had to make a NPC gnome happy in order for them to complete some sort of deal. So after thinking about it for a while he went off and got the materials to make a tricycle, gnome sized of course. The gnome loved it. Also fireworks are always good... Maybe a locket that can store magical images of people? Gnomes love to fiddle with that sort of thing. |

| Jakonen03-15-08, 01:35 AM | well maybe, Juuusst maybe, he gets her a cake. and he is in the cake minus pants because we all know gnomes hate pants (thanks above) |
| pmurray@bigpond.com03-15-08, 02:32 AM | I have an NPC gnome who has developed a crush on one of the PCs ... Any suggestions for tokens of devotion? (or a source for oddities that might fit the bill?) Gnomes are bards (at heart). Check the story of Cyrano (Cyragnome?) de Bergerac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrano_de_Bergerac). |
| Azezel03-15-08, 06:43 AM | (Ah, spring time, puppy love and gnomes. It's a scary sight.) Well, he could give her a puppy. |
| Etarnon03-15-08, 01:50 PM | A gold Dragon's egg. |
| bridgekat03-17-08, 11:48 AM | Thanks for the ideas. I think fireworks will be the next gift. Then we may see about that snow globe - if I can figure out a way to make it complicated enough. I appreciate the creativity! |
| Lincoln Hills03-17-08, 03:01 PM | A big old jar of horseradish! (Gift-giving customs differ from one culture to another.) |
| Jagyr Ebonwood03-17-08, 03:36 PM | My first thought is a garishly wrapped package with an elaborate bow. Inside is an ornate wooden box which, when opened, spews red glitter and heart shapped confetti, while something akin to Feelings is played by animated miniture dwarves with wings. Or instead of Feelings, have it play Never Gonna Give You Up. Congratulations, the first ever D&D in-game Rickrolling. |
| Cuindless03-17-08, 07:29 PM | It really depends on the campaign setting. In some game worlds, gnomes are tinkers by nature and love little gewgaws and doodads. A signal whistle. A little statuette of something. A miniature spyglass that separates like a bugs eye. A prism. Windchimes. In other worlds, gnomes are more like everyone else. Flowers. Chocolates. Hair berets. Fine combs. Cosmetics. Expensive soaps. Poetry and song. One thing that all gnomes have in common, though is illusions. All gnomes can cast dancing light, ghost sound and prestidigitation once per day. I imagine gnomish courtship would involve that. |
| chibishuffle03-17-08, 07:36 PM | book of erotic fantasy.... gnomish karma sutra :P |
