a lich and his Phylactery [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-11-06, 12:15 AM I have two questions concerning the phylactery

1) is it at all possiple for a Lich to create a Phylactery for another person? In theroy it shouldn't be all that difficult, create the needed magical writing binding the subjects soul to them and kill the willing subject then raise the body as a corpse creature. living body soul in box

2) would a phylactery work properly in an area of anti-magic (and for those of you who also play star wars i'm just curious if it would work in an area where the force was null.)

06-11-06, 12:51 AM 1. RAW, no. To become a lich, you have to make the conscious decision to become a lich, and that means you have to cram your soul into a magical item of your own making.

2. Good question. I'd say that a phylactery in an AMF would probably just be inactive, and the lich would have to get it out of there ASAP or not be able to reform until it does get out of the AMF.

06-11-06, 08:11 AM 1. Propably can't as the whole mechanic is to make sure that the liches are powerful casters only. They aren't supposed to be level 3 kobold warriors, but if you want to houserule so that a lich could make a level 3 kobold warrior to a lich, then houserule so. I just think it is... wrong. :)

2. Libris mortis says, that if phylafascasasad is inside an antimagic field, the lich gets back "alive" after 1d10 (or how much was it again...) days after the phylacatery is removed from antimagic field.

06-11-06, 10:50 AM Makeing another person a lich just doesnt seem right. And besides, if you could, then you could do it as an attack. LG high priest suddenly becomes a lich. Not a good thing. Besides, the way it reads, it is a much more personal thing than that. You cant eat food for somebody else, they have to do that themselves. This seems to be the same way.

However, there is the vassalich template in the Ravenloft Gazetteer Volume II, which is a mortal spellcaster who, with the help of a true lich, is turned into a weaker form of lich. The lich makes the phylactery (generally a small but precious gem), which the soon-to-be vassalich swallows, followed by the consumption of a small part of the lich itself. The lich generally keeps its minion's phylactery somewhere safe and secret, to ensure loyalty.
