A little Advice [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am by far probably newer then most DMs on here. I have been DMing for the better part of 3 years. This is my first Experiment with building my own D&D world, With its own history, Pantheon and the like. One of the things that i have hit a snag on is Naming everything. Cities, Kingdoms and whole Countrys.

Any and all advice would be appricated for someone who wants to build their entire world from scratch.

My secret...don't name stuff. Or at least, don't name stuff until the PCs are likely to go to it or encounter it or kill it or whatever to it.

I also cheat and have players name their character's hometowns when doing their backgrounds, then use the towns again later in future campaigns.

07-13-07, 08:00 PM Take all the Scrabble letters, toss them in the air and put together the ones that land face up :)

07-13-07, 08:02 PM Yep name generators are great.

I also found the appendix to "the Lord of the Rings" and the "Silmarilion" (I know I misspelled that:) ) both written by J.R.R. Tolkien, to be great sources for Elven/Dwarven runes/names/symbols or what have you. It also lists a bunch of former kingdoms of men and such so I've always used those books for inspiration for names and such.

I like making refernces to video games, characters, songs, stuff like that. I even worked some of the characters from Cabin Boy into an adventure. Rearrange some letters/add/take away some letters, reverse the spelling, somethinf like that: "Unknown", Kunowan.
