I'm DMing a game without actually owning a copy of the DM Guide -is that insane? :D

One of the Players brings his on the night of game and I've been using the various on-line SRD's in between and that's been working just fine.

However, none of them seem to have, (or I can't find), the guidelines for adjusting CR when you have multiple creatures facing your Players. For example, I know that a single Troll is CR 5, and two Trols are CR 7, but I don't remember why.

Does anyone know where I can find the rules for this on-line, or feel like printing them here?

Anyone got a used DM Guide I can buy? (j/k)

I my memory serves, a doubling of the number of creatures increases the EL by 2.

So one Troll is CR (and EL) 5. Two Trolls are EL 7. Four Trolls are EL 9. Each individual Troll is still only CR 5, though. It's just the encounter level that increases.

I could be slightly off on this, and I'm too lazy to go check in my DMG. Could someone verify this?

That's correct.

To Scott Wegener: I understand being w/o, its tough but manageable. Here is a great little (actually rather large) site: Hypertext SRD (http://www.d20srd.org)

hope it helps.

I love the Hypertext SRD, but I couldn't find this info in there.

I know it has the handy EL calculator thing, but I wanted to know the rule so I could do the math in my head when flipping through the MM or FF.
