I've read the threads I've found on travel encounters, the equipment section of the PHB and the encounter and terrain tables in the DMG. What I can't seem to calculate is how far the PCs can travel in a day.
If I have a medium creature walking from one town to the next and the terrain they are traversing has no difficulty modifier, how many miles can they go a day on foot?
(Once I have a base number I can adjust for terrain, encounter interuptions, etc.)
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

24 miles a day on foot for a creature with a speed of 30ft.

A creature can travel 1mph for each 10 ft. of movement. If you move 30 ft., you move 3mph. A horse with a 40 ft. movement rate moves 4mph. An eagle flying 80ft. moves 8 mph.

Ground movement assumes a straight road or otherwise open flat terrain. Movement through forest, hills, mountains, etc. is always less.

Most creatures can only travel for 8 hours a day. A normal human moving 30 ft., moves 3mph * 8 hours = 24 miles. Creatures attempting to move faster or for longer than 8 hours per day are forced marching.

This is consistant with Naismith's Formula, which is used by hikers to determine travel time over mixed terrain: Allow one hour for every three miles of distance, plus half an hour for every thousand feet of uphill climbing.

Naismith's Formula assumes that the hiker is reasonably fit, proceeding at a brisk but measured pace, and not carrying a heavy load. Additional time should be allowed for rest stops. The formula makes no special allowance for downhill sections, and only the map distance covered is taken into account at the standard walking pace.
