| The Colonel01-07-05, 04:24 PM | Being an old git I'm thinking of fixing the demilich so that it's more like the 1st Ed one, but this raises the problem of assigning a CR to it. The 3Ed one is easier to grade because it's uniformly lucid and agressive, but the old style one is less predictable. Do I assign the CR based on what it can do if mishandled (or maybe just save myself some work and alter the 3Ed one's behaviour rather than its stats)? Arguably a smart or lucky character can simply walk around a demilich, loot its lair and walk away without a fight, which would seem to defeat it but hardly seems worth the XP, but on the other hand if mishandled the best solution is generally to reach for new character sheets. Variable CR perhaps? Depending on whether or not it activates? But then activating it surely counts as an unecessary fight, for which I am disinclined to award full XP. Ideas? |

If the demilich doesn't activates, then the trasure is reward enough for the 'encounter'. If the PC was there just for the treasure and he defeated the demilich 'cause the DM overslept himself, then I would give a 20% penalization to the Xp. |
