After playing D&D for a few years, and coming here into the forums often, I got a brilliant idea (And if it's somehow been done already, I'll be kind of mad :waits: ). Anyway, my idea is to make a game I call D&D Lite. Basically, it's a kind of D&D that can be easily played anywhere, anytime (The equivlent of taking out a deck of cards and playing poker). Actually, it is a deck of cards :)
Dungeon rooms are a deck of cards, drawn at each room to determine what's in it. Complimenting is a deck of cards with grids on it for random shaping of the dungeon.
A small list of various encounters for various levels, but I am not sure how I"m going to do monsters, (probably just like the D&D mini's monsters).
A treasure pile with listings on each card for treasure for various levels (Up to this point, any level party can play because the cards are all listed for certain levels).

The problem as you can see is still characters. I don't want to have seperate characters like the D&D Mini's style, because that would create a massive deck of various characters at various levels (not to mention the player might want to make something not covered in the deck). The game also has to be DM less as well as mainly hack'n'slash. Making a plot for the games is do-able, but kinda difficult. Well, that's mostly what I have, can anyone out there give me more ideas?

Have you ever played the Spellfire D&D card came? It isn't exactly what your saying but you can deffinetely pull out your deck and play against someone else who has a deck.

Nope. Acutally, I've never even heard of it. What is it? Where can I find information?

Magic: The Gathering (http://www.wizards.com/magic/welcome.asp)

There are alot of games like what you are talking about. But its not really something you can just whip out at a moments notice and start going.

There was a board game called Dungeon (that I would love to get my hands on again), but it was a board game.

Munchkin.

It's infinitely more adept at satisfying that "kick in the door, kill the monster, loot the gold, screw your buddy" urge you feel yourself getting.

Ooooohhhhh.......Munchkin.

Hell, I'm gonna go play a game now.

Ah yes, munckin. In fact, I own everything in existance for munchkin, as I love it so much. And I've also played Magic, but it's all right.

Dungeon Quest is very similar to what you describe above. It came with 2 expantions too I believe. Catacombs and Hero Quest. I may be mistaken though. Been a while.

Actually Echo that EXACT thing existed for D&D 2nd edition. They had decks called, Deck of Encounters (I believe that was the name of it). It was a little box filled with cards, well more like those big 6" x 9" cards but they were index cards either way. The cards were filled with tiny "Mini-Adventurers” categorized by level. They would have monsters, traps, or sometimes just stories with interesting NPC. The idea was each one was a stand-alone encounter that could be placed anywhere in the campaign world. Also all the relevant abilities were on the card, stats, hit points, Thac0, AC, proficiency checks, etc. I believe (my memory is falling apart, it was always bad but Age just kills it) it was out about eight to ten or so years ago. Anyway I ran a quick Google and you can still buy them online for like 5 bucks or so.

it stunk... :P

Edit: I just realized that there was one other piece that may be useful for you. The backs of the cards had the resolution and XP value based on what the characters did, that way you could technically play the game without a DM and it would still be very D&D since your rewards are in the back. But to truly D&D, even lite, without a DM is really getting more in to the realm of Magic and other such stuff.

I remember that Deck 'o stuff.

They had some for traps and encounters and others as well. It could work, but its more of a nice tool for when you dont have time to plan. I guess you could use it though

THere is a card game called warlord I believe (I am not a flopper anymore so I do not keep up)

It was described as D and D with a deck of cards so it was pretty much what you said you were thinking about

The idea is quite interesting, even marketable. I think Ill make up a deck and test it.

I think ideally it would take multiple decks.
-Rooms/treausre
-Monsters/loot
-Traps

I guess you could incorporate them into a single deck, but that would limit its usefulness to be used again.

I would like this, opposed to random encounters.... Most of the people I play with are MTG players as well, so they may relish the opportunity to draw for encounters or something.
