Hello everyone. I hope you guys can help me out.

Im running a game where we havent picked classes yet. My players dont realize this, but im going to assign a class to them based on their initial actions. To make this even more fun, they dont even know we are playing D&D!

What I need is some help coming up with situations to cover the core classes. Think Elder Scrolls, you run through a dungeon and based on your skills used you get a class. What makes this hard is since my players dont know where they are, they dont know magic exists! So, they cant readily "cast magic missile into the darkness".

How would you guys handle this?

Seeing as noone can actually use magic, everyone is probably going to smack enemies, so everyone is going to become a fighter.

I didnt say they couldnt, I just said they didnt know it exists. As far as smacking people, couldnt that make them a Monk as well?

EDIT - On a side note, im taking into consideration RL knowledge. Im using the players as the foundation of their character.

Hm. You could have them find items such as scrolls, and see who uses them (or tries to). You could see who prays for help. You could see who tries to fight unarmed, and so on.

I second that. See how they respond to items that fit their class. If they find a pile of books, who sais "bah, books!" and who picks them up, curious as to their contents? When they have to get something from another character, who tries to steal it? Who tries to barter for it? Who wants to just smash that other character's head and take the item?
If they find a shiny trinket, who wants to immediately sell it to cash in the money, who wants to study it to see what it does, etc...
There's one or more "what class are you?" sites online, where you have to answer questions and the computer decides what race and class you are, based off your answers. Some of these questions might give you ideas on what sort of "dilemmas" to offer your pc's.

You can try pay attention to what they actually say and how they act, not necessarily what they do.

If someon in the group thinks more before acting, they are Intelligence based, so there is your arcane caster. If someone try to hide or sneak around then there is your Rogue or Scout.

Let them find a scroll or wand and see who does what with it.

The only one I see a little difficult is covering a Cleric.

There is only one problem with this, and that is if you have a showboater among the players who tries to do everything, even when they are the worse person possible to be doing it ... you know the ones I mean!

Just make people like that play a Bard. That'll teach 'em

Thanks for the suggestions! That should give me something to work with.
