What are some great ideas and tips for creating an interesting area, remembering that I am reasonably new to DMing. Any tips will help.

I would reccomend reading. Find things you like in books, and then modify them to your taste. Thats what I use a lot of times for inspiration

If you're not sure what to do on a grand scale, then start small. Just make your dungeon(s). Then, based on those, make the town(s) near the dungeon(s). Then get a general idea of the country around the town(s). Then think about the nearby countries. And you just keep expanding until you have a complete multiverse.

Both above suggestions are good. Also, unless you want to be so original you can publish your stuff, doing what I do and taking bits and pieces from published materials is easy and fun. Don't worry about having everything perfect at the start, because you will find out what your players enjoy most and be able to work out later details around that.
