My players have just reached level 10 and are at the moment in the Elven forest Leyndamal (homebrew). They are in the elven "capital" Olmas Irastur and have got wuite close to the king, the high priests (clerics of Corellon Lorethion) and the city councellor (a dragon).

Now I'm preparing a war between the elves and some drows that live in a nearby mountain. The drows will attack, and their goal is to kill all elves. Noww I want this to be something the players remember. With a lot of plots, stories and the like. Do you have any tips and ideas how to make this "a night to remember" (or more like a month to remember..)

In the group are a human figter, a half-orc barbarian, a human rogue/fighter, a human sorcerer and an elven cleric (from Olmas Irastur).

i appreciate any tips and ideas :)

Send them out of the town with a subquest.

When they are out (better if when camped out at night) have them attacked by a Drow patrol, trying to steal the party magic equipment.
If possible, try to avoid killing players or the death of all the drow rogues. When a few start dying have the other escape (possibly with at least 1 magic item)

If there are dead drows give them lenses of detect magic. (wondrous item. Allow the wielder to cast detect magic 2/day. minimal gp value).

If the drow party is partially successful or totally successfull PCs will try to investigate.
When they investigate, they'll know that other people has been attacked, but strangely the drows never attack elves. They probably overlooked the cleric this time.

Drows avoid elves because they don't want to put them on the defensive immediately.

Bring also to player knowledge that the powerful Mithal defending Olmas Irastul is weakened.

Do the drows steal magic items only because of profit? Obviously not.
The drow high wizards developed a powerful artifact which is capable of leeching the mithal magical power by annihilating each little bit of magic with magic of equal power.
The magic item stolen will get destroyed inside the Leecher to weaken the magic defenses of Olmas Irastul.

The High Priestess is in the meanwhile trying to build a powerful army. Not only drows will attack the elven capital, but every other race who had problems with the elves would like to get involved in this.

An increasing in deaths among orc, hobgoblin and goblin warchiefs is the result of kind "no" said to the priestess.

The PCs are the only hope of Ormas Irastul.
If they manage to disable, damage or destroy the Leecher, the mithal will leave the capital safe.
If they manage to find the secret plot of the attack against the elven nation they'll be able to warn the king, who will raise the army.
If they manage to do both, then the drows will be screwed.
If they don't do any of this, Ormas Irastul will have a really hard time, and the PC will be needed in the key places of the battle to fight elite enemy troops.

Either way they'll have fun :)

Drive your players. Design the night for 8+ encounters. There's nothing like the desperation of having no healing left, no spells left, and the prospect of more fights.

If its a dry time of year, there's nothing like a 10d10 wall of fire heading your way. The drow started it, you see.

Saving others may take precedence. Once they learn what the drow are up to, saving who they can may take on a measure of importance.

Saving treasures, knowledge, books, etc may also be important to the elves.
