A Paladin in Sigil... Queen of the Demonweb Pits [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-09-07, 04:24 PM I run a low magic post-apocalyptic - as far as Forgotten realms goes anyway - world. Evil has recently triumphed over good and all that. Think Lord of the Rings... Ring gets dropped into volcano, Sauron dies and all that - but the evil generals realize they STILL have more power than the good, and overrun the West. So anyway, this small band of heroes, trying to help maintain order in a relatively peaceful area (Evil army swept past the area and is starting to break up) ends up being led iton the Queen of Demonweb Pits new adventure series. My problem is a very aggressive Paladin... Would demons attack a Paladin immediately? Should he attack them on sight?

08-09-07, 04:30 PM Paladins and demons would certainly want to attack each other, but if they have other goals (that sword swinging won't solve), they should at least try to talk.

I agree. Is this the last Paladin of any consequence in this world? If there's not many left, it's in the Paladin's interest to avoid instant death. The Paladin could go down fighting, and they will bury the corpse with honor and a pretty flower.
There's nothing wrong with civility and diplomacy that can abide by the Paladin code you have hashed out with your player.

08-09-07, 05:24 PM I think that not attacking a demon on sight is ok for a paladin, especially if it will lead to certain death, but talking and diplomacy is out of the question. This goes against everything that a paladin stands for, and working with evil is a violation of almost any paladin code you could come up with (heck, it's one of the few things mentioned in the PHB about the code). I don't know how a demon would immediately know that a character was a paladin though. Look no further than the iconic "Paladin in Hell" illustration in the original PHB for inspiration (it's on page 23 for anyone who cares and can look). That's what a paladin would do in the demon web pits if they didn't have another goal that is. They wouldn't talk. That's just not right.
